Hi Mike thanks for the thoughts but all's good 👍 yeah I burnt myself out of video editing after that wonderful long walk! Yes enjoying plenty adventures with the dog - he's a rescue and took a while to settle but he absolutely loves running and has got me the fittest I've been for a couple years. Hope all's OK with you too

@@endorphins479 Yeah, pretty good and thanks for your reply. Went to see my son and his wife in Auckland in January. Great trip and spent a few days in Wanaka with daughter in law's family. Great people who loaned me a car so I could drive then walk the Hooker Trail at Mount Cook. But twanged a calf muscle and didn't get far beyond the feckin car park!! All good now and can play my bass drum nae bother! Was playing at the Callander Blues n Jazz early October. Maybe see you there next year and hope to see some footage of you and the rescue pup? Glad the visit to NZ went well. Sorry to hear about the misfortune on the hike, but if it's any consolation my last trip to Wanaka was after finding myself upside down in a ditch in my hire car when the steering just stopped obeying - windscreen smashed etc but I was OK just in shock and some good folks drove me to Wanaka where I had accom booked. My better memories of NZ are cycling trips I took there in the early 2000s. Yep maybe see you at Callander! Best wishes, Scott

Real shame about the Forth Inn, Aberfoyle. Such a sad outcome for them, it was a well-loved place and I do miss it

Thanks so much for this lovely post and clearly there was plenty you could relate to from your own past experience. I did not expect to be wearing the same shoes by the end and maybe shouldn't have been but they did the job, all kit was pretty worn by the end and struggling with the wind rain but that just adds to the satisfaction of making it to Land's End. All the best with your future adventures!

It was a great adventure and I particularly remember the changing country smells from the oaks to the bog myrtle. Always meant to go back to race but got a puppy instead 😂 and fitness diminished. No regrets

What a great trip to look forward to for a first visit to Britain, enjoy! Yeah I can understand why zero days are popular on stuff like the PCT where resupply means hitching a lift off the trail then trying to get back - for practical reasons more than the rest benefit! But two short days instead is more possible in most of Britain (except the Cape Wrath Trail!) and I defo enjoyed that and its benefits more. Atb.

I made the homemade background music, hopefully better than wind noise and bits pointless dialog it replaces.

Yep I experienced all of that in Oregon on a bike trip! Great memories though.

A big reason for the big walk last year was to come to terms with it and get myself ready to take on a new four legged conpanion. It worked. Memories with Finn always be treasured of course

Yes, didn't rush into anything but eventually got a rescue late last year and he's been fab.

It's each to their own, but there's obvious sections most people end up on, e.g. I met one chap that didn't link up to Offas Dyke cos he'd seen it and went more through eastern shropshire way

Hi Dave, good to hear from you and glad you've got plans for continuing that same journey. Some emotional memories there for you, it must seem lame when I go on about how much Finn meant to me on my journeys, actually big part of the walk was for healing which it did. Not included in the videos are the moments I ended up in tears when getting in touch with a dog rescue shelter and then deleting my application as I knew I still wasn't ready (happened at Kington, Offas Dyke Path, the day after a border collie came running up to me with stick in mouth like Finn). By the time I finished the walk I knew I was ready and now enjoy a wonderful four legged companion (from that rescue shelter) that absolutely loves running with me. I'm looking forward to "shared adventures" once again. all the best mate.

Well done getting through all those, yes I did feel a change when I reached Somerset and S.W.C.P., lost the happy go lucky attitude and became a bit driven. Weather had a say in that too. Defo a healing process going on after losing my Finn and was only ready to rescue a new 4 legged conpanion after. No website just occasional posts here of walks and runs in nice places. Hope you enjoy the Kerry Way this year it's a beautiful and varied walk to look forward to with nice colourful villages to rest at along the way 👍

I have a pair of mud claws. Would have walked that far in them having a thin sole. X talon would probably suit me more but it's always interesting to know what people are comfy with. Seal skin socks ?

@garethtowers mudclaws were overkill from the Great Glen South to the end. I would have happily and more comfortably walked in pegasus trails, given the dry conditions

So sorry for your loss. On a much lesser scale can relate to how having a goal changes the outlook as I was in a total mess after losing my dog in 2022 and found I couldn't look forward to anything anymore. Later that year I decided I needed to switch off from everything and embrace what makes me happy, in 2023 I walked from Cape Wrath to Land's End never putting pressure on myself to get there (well at least the first 95%!) but just to indulge in a simple act that I knew I would enjoy. And be stronger for it. Take care.

Brilliant! What a nice walk to look forward to with your lab. The route's improved since I did it with Finn too - you don't need to walk along the roadside before dropping to Cannich. Ahh the weather was crap but happy memories with Finn. All the best

Thanks mate. Tbh I have the original innov8 mudclaws (half the price as they were competing with walsh pbs) and still use them, outlasted all the more recent ones at twice the price. Dunno what's changed (the originals didn't have the graphite thing but outlasted the graphite thing)

Thank you for posting Rob and glad you enjoyed and want to get out and do more, though if you did the Wales Coast Path you probably do loads already! Yes I am interested in doing that, especially after hearing about it from Adam Brown. No big walk plans at moment, enjoying my new canine companion and running again. All the Best

I noticed that you weren't wearing traditional hiking boots. What did you wear and were they better than leather boots that I've always used?

I guess it's personal preference - when I started fell running years ago I used trail shoes and got used to them - it didn't seem to make sense to go back to boots when walking unless snowy or very wet. Feet and ankles toughen up through years of running and have to be OK with often having wet feet. Not everyone's idea of comfy!

Thank you Stewart and obviously you can relate to that weather certainly made a test of it. I was 14kg weight at Cape Wrath carrying 6 days food, got it to about 11kg - tent 2.7kg itself. Most would go lighter and wildcamp more I know. I was happy though

Hi! The signposting was really good from what I remember - there was one section I didn't enjoy having to walk along to road verge down to Cannich (it wasn't too busy but wasn't the best walking), they might have fixed that now hopefully

Just checked on walkhighlands - they have definitely replaced the road part with new paths (which I'm sure will be freshly signposted) so it's a much better wall than when I did it. Enjoy!

And the head wind! Morale knocked a bit and defo had to work for the miles and was grateful to get to camp and some comforts to stay positive

Thanks Robert, I was trying to make the walk more of a "holiday" than an endurance challenge hence stops etc. The videos I get pleasure back from sharing the journey knowing like-minded folks get something out of it, and more selfishly I have log to keep the memories

Do you think the road walking caused the sress fracture? I was certainly aware of pains (tho mild) after long sections of tarmac/gravel on this year's walk. Drop bags are great but always a worry mice etc get in that's why I used tupperware - have to carry that tho

@endorphins479 no, during the descent from towards Glencoul bothy, felt something go and by the time I got there my knee was swelling. By the morning, it was better, but then did shorter days. Not a lot of options. But I found that walking on soft ground helped. That was in 22 and this year I did the route you took from Inchnadamph.

@endorphins479 i will, but it is likely to be 2025, next years set, and that will be the test to see if this old body, 67, can take multidat hiking over an extended period. Started hiking in 22 and done the CWT twice and going for the SNT next year. .
