EP 55: How many airplanes does a guy need? For some reason, I have been on a crazy acquisition spree lately, buying kits, plans, engines and materials to build even more airplanes. I mean things that I had never thought of building. It started a few months ago with the need to purchase a fiberglass fuselage from my friend Vic at Vicrc.com. An F6F Hellcat created from a Jerry Bates design… I’m a...

EP 54: 20 year old carburetor needs to be refreshed I can’t remember at the time that I banished this plane to storage if it was having any engine problems. I wanna say probably not because this particular G-38 was one of the best running, most reliable engines that I have ever owned, and it was my first gasolene engine ever. I remember buying it from an old friend that retired in our area that...

EP 53: F4U down, and shop update I had a mishap with a Corsair I have been flying since 2008. I have repaired it several times over the years with little fender benders, and scrapes and dents, but this time… I just didn’t feel like pasting the little pieces back together and opted to upgrade to a new “standing Corsair” for my ready to fly fleet. Also I introduce a new hangar queen project and d...

EP 50: Inspecting the Spacewalker II fuel system It’s a good idea to inspect a fuel system that has sat for a long time with no use. Turns out that gasolene and oil exposure to parts can cause a few issues, especially from plastics. Today I tear apart the gas tank and filler valve and find some interesting things, and some not so interesting things as well. But it’s a good practice. If you have...

EP 49: Found an old friend in the storage unit As the planes are one by one moving out of storage and finding a permanent place in the shop, I came across an old friend that kind of got forgotten. Well not forgotten I guess, but left to sit in storage for too long of a time. The Sig Spacewalker II was my very first giant scale (IMAA requirements) first gasolene engine and first three piece wing...

Just got the plans, I'm going to power it with an old like new Fuji 43 gasser. I need a kick around plane. I was thinking of incorporating flaps as well.
Hey it's me... Dan from the future!!!Good call on the flaps, I'm already conspirering to recover this one in fabric. Check your prop clearance as in this build series I ended up going to a 30cc dle. The gear height might not be enough for a 20 inch prop. Just a suggestion. Check it out.
@@Capgains7777 Good point about the prop clearance. I also have a set of floats that will fit this plane very well, my club has 4 or 5 float flies a year, hopefully this will be my go to plane.
I'm having issues when bending the shape of the fuselage what do you do to battle one side bowing more than the other. When that happens tend to cause a twist in Mt fuselage
That is the struggle on laying out a fuse. Many things can cause the banana ing of a fuse. Sometimes it could be one side is slightly softer than the other, so picking carefully to match the sides is a consideration. But for the most part if you can build over the plan and make sure the sides match the lines is going to help infinitely. I like using a magnet board for my layouts so it is very easy to set the magnet on the line and keep the side braced to it. You can also do it with pinning if you use pins to build. Another good practice is to draw a centerline on the plan, and centerline on each former so as you install them you will be centering the former and the sides should come flush to them and be centered. Eyeball your work as you progress. I will typically have a T pin standing straight up on the centerline of former 1 and a t pin on the centerline of the furthest back former or where the sides come together. You can periodically look down them as you add parts and even temporarily run a string between the two to see that things are running down the fuse equidistant. Lastly make sure the fuse is flat on the table or crutch (if it uses that method) twist is also a banana maker. So keep an eye on the sides matching in height as you build. If you get a variance you may have to reset a former that is causing the twist, maybe glued at an angle or not squared up to the side. But take your time and build as straight as you can.
Where did you get this magnetic "holders"? And do you have some steel table or just magnet to magnet?
Your pronunciation reminds me of my favorite movie "battle of Britain" , from 1969 , the old British actors says it just like that ( with the proper amount of stiff-upper lip) , in that movie you also get brits trying to pronounciate "stukas" and Germans trying to say "Spitfire" which sounds hillarious , not ready to tackle a warbird scale myself for building and flying ( but trying to cobble together an old falcon 56 kit for the moment) your channel has soo great tips on building, cant wait to try some of those techniques!
Hurricane = herdi ken. Hahaha. Glad you are enjoying the content. Hoping to get back in the shop soon and start working off my list of projects. It was a busy summer of big non hobby projects.

Nice flight lads well done 👍👍👍👍
Hey! Really appreciate your tutorial..I'm building a Sterling Diamant from a kit I bought that has sat unopened, sealed in it's original plastic wrap since about 1986. I've been using Elmer's Carpenter glue and taking all kinds of care in aligning and clamping all the parts. Very difficult, but done and done well. Started using the CA glue (Loctite Professional thin type) to tack parts..then saw how it "seeped" into the balsa. I was concerned that it really wouldn't work as well as the Elmer's joints that were glued and clamped when the CA was simply flowed into parts that were being held in alignment under pressure....WOW! What you showed me was that I CAN hold the parts under pressure, flow the CA into the joint and be assured that the joint would be true and strong.. This is making the build SO much easier. What I've been doing to align and clamp parts using the Elmer's was really tough...Had to come up with all kinds of ways to hold proper alignments and then figure out how to apply clamping forces...Anyway..Thanks again...
Brilliant video and very informative.
SAFETY GUARD? Any comments, please, Dan, on advisability of using a Safety Guard?
Great video, particularly for someone like me, whose experience goes back to the days of Duco cement. I love seeing your cat too. 🥰
Hi Dan question when using the gorilla glue to glue balsa sheeting on the wing do you have to wet the sheeting to get the gorilla glue to bond? I came across a video you did about using this glue with thick thick CA but wasn't able to find it again! thank you Michael Johnston
Was wondering where do you get the plans?
Aerofred.com
This was a great video! Thank you for making it!
Also - Can you talk about your Mini-Split? I've been thinking about installing one in my garage
I am retired. Two years now. The only thing that really holds up my time now is the 50 year old home we bought, and the repair and many projects my wife requisitions. I think I have shown shots of the backyard raised garden project in some of my videos. At some point I hope to finish up and work mostly on my airplane inventory. The mini split is easily the best piece of equipment I have bought for the shop ever. When we bought the house there was a Pik a watt commercial grade shop heater that ran with a 220v 50 amp breaker. It used a good amount of power running 24/7 just to keep the shop at 50 degrees in the winter. However summer brings sometimes 2 1/2 months of 90-100 degree days which makes the shop 82-85 by the end of the day. Not pleasant to work in. The mini split is a heat pump, so it heats and cools. It's a Mitsubishi and I think it's 12,000 btu. Cools my 20x24 shop down fairly quickly. And heats much the same. It did not run up a high electricity cost. The breaker on this one is 220v 15 amps so, it is lighter draw much more efficient. Not cheap, but, very effective if you want to be able to be in your shop at virtually any time. In the winter I will fire up football games and spend entire days out there working on airplanes and projects.
Are you retired? How do you find the time?
Thanks for the tips! I am definitely impressed by the packaging of this glue company. My next glue order is definitely this product. When i get glue on my fingers I just use debonder, it works great.
Hello Dan i am building a rc plane do you make the wingspan the same size as the body length
Caution, I used CA to build a complex scale model and became allergic to it. If I use CA now I get flu/bad hay-fever like symptoms for a week.

Beautiful that was butter
You can become sensitive to CA from the fumes, so I wouldn’t use it too much. Titebond 3 for me
Thumbs down for the music track, especially during engine start. Beautiful plane though.

It’s better to build a concrete runway for the model aircraft
Or, maybe some big bush wheels. Cheaper than a paved runway and way more fun.
Beautiful plane! Congratulations on the successful maiden flight! From the video it looks like it may need a bit of right rudder trim.

Wing tips look great
That baby can carry some junk in the trunk!
At one point right about the time Mark finished it, we joked that it could carry one of his grand children. 5 years later, and even a few more grandkids, that boat has sailed.
I just bought two plans sets from Bruce about a month ago. So sad he’s not making kits anymore but I’m scratch building a Reaction 54 jet as we speak and next is the Venture 60. I should get the plans for all his airplanes. They’re pretty easy to scratch build and the plans are well drawn. Nice flying king!
I’m glad he is selling plans. His kits, if you can find one in the wild are truly the best documented instructions, plans, and the quality and completeness of the contents is first rate. Plus they are great flying machines.
Well done. Lordy, is that a one piece wing?
It’s actually a three piece. But Mark didn’t want to mess around with trying to connect wing panels at the field, so he built a shelf that goes the full length of his trailer to carry it fully assembled. It’s a two manner, as I don’t think he can either load, or unload the beast from the trailer and mount the wing by himself. It’s just huge. In addition the tail feathers are removable for transport, but he ties the fuselage to the floor of the trailer for transport. Takes up a lot of the trailer. I hope he never breaks that prop. He’ll probably cry about having to buy another.
what part of the country are you in
We are in the Cascade mountains in southern Oregon.
What covering did you put on that plane? Monaco Oratex, etc.
Ultracote film
Well done. Why did he choose to build that plane?
Mark loves Bruce Tharp designs. He has 2 of the standard sized Flying Kings, a Venture 60, a Vortex, and several of the planes that Bruce designed for Sig back in the day. He says that this is probably the biggest thing he will ever build, however, a Balsa USA Ercoupe just sauntered into his life, and it’s pretty close in size.
It's nice to hear an engine that is fuel powered even If I personally don't want to mess with it
Amen 🙌
The cool thing about this hobby today is, we’ve all come from different start ups. So if you got your start in electrics, going over to a fuel can be intimidating. Me however, I started up in glow fuel engines. Electrics now that they have evolved from the days of can motors and Nicads to lithium and out runners, well that intimidates me. What speed controller rating? What battery size, what prop size so the whole thing doesn’t catch fire? And that pop, the big batteries make when you connect them to the ESC… makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Gas engines are easier if you have used glow, just a different carburetor to tune. I’ve gotten used to the way that electrics sound now with bigger props. I think it’s kind of funny the way some guys put sound systems in their electric planes though.
@@Capgains7777 Started off over 40 years ago with glow. Now like electric at 1200 to 1600 span. Fit a couple in the car, with one piece wing 1200s go in one piece. At the field a couple of bolts and plugs, connect the battery, a flight check and in the air.

Where's a good place to find kids. Balsa USA's is one of them.
Kits are hard to find anymore, and sadly there are very few still producing them. After ARFs became all the rage, the kit makers kind of quit. As far as I know, BUSA is probably the last. Sig Manufacturing has been sold to a new owner that has fortified lines of Sigs classic planes that were all kits, to ARFs now although he has vowed to start making kits again. The word on the street is he is having the Something Extra, and LT40 kits being produced and plans to bring them all back…. I’d love to see it, but the marketer in me wonders how feasible that is, when the glut of the market seems to still be chasing the ARFs. I really wish there was a place that had a replicator like on Star Trek. You could call them, and they could with the stroke of a few keys, custom cut any kit to order with all the parts, hardware, balsa, plywood and hardwoods, instructions and rolled plans and in the mail. Ah crap, I am rambling… I did find Legend Hobby has a few kits available. I have a feeling Seagull Models may produce a few actual kits as well. Good luck.
@Capgains7777 Thank you, I find kits very hard to find. So, I started a scratch Built, No Instructions. So you take the print and you make a decision on What size wood, an interpret how to build the plane. Much harder!! I am currently scratch building a 1/3 scale Piper' Tri-Pacer pacer P22. Hard but FUN!!
@@josephkerkau2520you are correct, building with no instructions is harder and requires more interpretation. But typically there are three different assemblies that take place. Wing(s), Fuselage, Tail feathers and then sticking them together. If you find a set of plans that was published in a magazine sometime in the past then often there is an article that can be printed for more clues and that may be an answer as well. Model Aviation has a vast plans service that will sell plans that will come with the article. Some designers like Jerry Bates plans will also provide a set of instructions that are informative yet brief. There is Meister aircraft which have plans and kits but bigger and mostly warbirds. Hostetler plans, Zirolli plans are other designers that have agreements with cutting companies like National Balsa, and Precision kit cutters that can provide a complete or short kit. Bob Holman cuts kits for several designers. You can look at their website and backward find a set of plans. So you do have some options that provide you with what is essentially a kit.
🤯…wow, that’s a lot of building
Make sure to keep your camera rolling when you work on all those projects. Excited to follow along with you.
Haha lots of projects is the way to go!
Glad to see you are enjoying the hobby, my friend...
Thanks Mike
