Dragon Boat Technique For Beginners - How To Paddle
This is great coaching advice in all aspects regarding alignment and the lower arm. The problem I have is with the upper arm. It is WAY too high. When you upper arm is this high it is only being supported by your rotator cuff muscles muscles when you start to apply downward pressure. Over time this will seriously injure your shoulder. This technique is "old school" dragon boat technique. I wish you paddled in this video because you most likely would not start your catch from this position when you actually paddled. Your body would self correct and your elbow would drop along with your arm. The best paddlers out there are the Tahitians. Here's a video of Shell Va'a, the top Tahitian team. Notice their top arm height as they move into the catch. The top arm is at most only a little above their eye line. In this position the top arm is applying downward pressure primarily supported by the lat and upper pecs.
First, you MUST have a sense of time! I'm a drummer, not a dragon boat drummer, but a musician drummer.and it drives me nuts when a dragon boat drummer is subtly out of time or inconsistent. The beat/pulse comes right at the full catch. I've even yelled out during a race (now! now! now!) at a bad drummer to try to get them to drum correctly.
rhank you!
Hey, i just come across your channel and you guys are doing some amazing stuff with ur videos. Do keep it up. Just some suggestions… 1. The part where your front camera cuts off… i think u should retake and edit it in. Cos from experience not many can visualize what it means for “shoulders or hands to be in-line”. I think that part is crucial. 2. You may want to add a line in the video to mark the gunnel. Same thing make it easy for people to visualize 3. You repeatedly say scapula but you keep touching your serratus anterior. Much as serratus anterior has effect on the scapula but by doing so you r somewhat misleading others. I do highly recommend that you do a video explaining how the shoulder complex works with each other and why wrong posture or technique in dragonboat paddling can lead to injury overtime. Maybe can work with a physio to work on that video so that it gives ur vids more legitimacy of what you are sharing. Hope this will help u build your channel. Keep it up.
Wow that was very try helpful. I know where you live and what is my grandpa doing in the back. You found him!
One question please, can I put this link on my dragon boat site?
Thanks for the video. I live in Turkey and today will be my very first day trying dragon boat. Very excited! Your video was very helpful ❤
Dragon boating means peace and freedom. Leave all you land problems on the dock before you get on the boat. Your at peace with all your fellow teammates and the world.
Rip rotor cuff
Wow that’s awesome thanks Rae
Great video
What about pec and bicep tendon strains?.. asking for a friend 👀👀👀
4:48 catch/extension ?! ;)
but where does the power come from? Is it the body rotation it’s gotta get transferred from one of the arms being straight.. isn’t it the bottom?
Dragon boating and paddling means freedom and strength following my 10 years of living with or battling cancer. Paddles up!!! I just joined a team and participated in my first race! It was amazing! Would love to receive a Hornet paddle!!!❤❤
thank you for a great educational video on how to paddle a dragonboat and practice outside the water at home with a broom.
Thank you for sharing this training .
Nice to hear that the Space Coast Dragon Boat Camp was the source of this warmup...thanks for coming!
What is the damper setting? 5 out of 10?
Would be even better comparison if used either dragon boat paddle in both clips or OC paddle in both clips. Cheers.
We like to use the exercise called “Stir the Pot” which warms up the Shoulder area/Rotator Cuff prior to paddling. It’s conducted in a Demi-squat bent over with one arm hanging loose. Then the paddler begins rotating the hand in a small circle, gently and slowly, allowing the gravity and weight to push it wider. Make sure paddlers stop the rotation and start the circular motion going the opposite direction before switching to the other arm.
OMG, I hope these never happens to us.
In this exercise is it not possible to work more with your back, as it seam that from most videos back bearly moves, not like in a real boat.
❤🎉 Im going to join our team paddlers, and its my first time being in a water sport dragon boat. Im so excited and watching, learning from your channel helps me boosts my enthusiasm to get ready and be part of an exciting team. 🎉
For me, Dragon Boat means growing together as a community, being able to give and support others as well as receiving and learning from them

What kind of boat is this
Hurricane Outrigger Canoe :)
Was recently at a dragon boat festival and someone was selling the paddles, but the new designs have some of my teammates a bit skeptical. I wanted to know if the edges of the paddle was rough? The edges on the paddle they had at the festival seemed unfinished and almost gave the impression that there was a decal on it, because you could feel where the image was along the edge. Thoughts?
Hmm no, that's not something that we noticed with the sample paddles we received. I imagine that it's possible that there was some variation between the batches.
Just had my first session today and it was amazing! Will binge watch all your videos, keep it up!
Thank you for watching, and enjoy the paddle journey!!
I just got my first Hornet Sting+ paddle today. Can't wait to use it this weekend. Can you please share how you removed the grip cover from your paddle? Thank you.
Enjoy your new paddle!! I just used a pair of scissors to carefully cut the grip off the paddle-- just be careful not to scratch the carbon fiber as you do so :)
@@PaddlesUpDB thank you 😊
Thank you!!
Dragon boat to me is meeting your self worth to enjoy the great ocean , friends , and most of all the physical and mental strength that this sports has to offer. I have been in this sports since to 2012 and been in love since then 💖
Hi. I'm a newbie. Around 2 months into dragon boat. I'm looking at getting my 1st carbon fiber paddle. I'm torn between Hornet Sting X0 vs Burnwater Reactor III. I want to use it long-term rather than getting a cheaper carbon fiber and eventually buying another carbon fiber paddle just months after. Which of the two that I mentioned would you recommend? Thank you.
Hi! First, if at all possible I would highly recommend trying out both paddles if you can. I'd ask around within your team and other teams to see if somebody would be willing to lend you a blade for a practice-- Hornet Sting and Burnwater Reactor are such different paddles that it's hard to tell which one will suit your paddle style without trying it out first. Burnwater also comes in several different levels of stiffness/flexibility which will greatly change the feel of the drive. I will say that for our team, we generally recommend Hornet Sting for newbies, and it's a paddle that will serve them well for years and years down the line. There are other people in our community who swear by Burnwater as well, but I have not honestly spent a lot of time with the blade to be able to speak to it in detail. Bottom line-- they are both well-loved blades that will last you years as you grow into your individual paddle style. #1 thing would be to just make sure it's an adjustable paddle so that you can modify the length depending on which bench you're sitting and water conditions :) I hope this helps! Paddle preference is such an individual thing that it can be hard to give a blanket recommendation.
Dragonboat paddling is the best sport in the world
Agreed! --Rae
Keep it up bro!!!
I like allen lock. I never try hornet paddle before
they ship only in USA? :(
im in canada , any other brand idea for me?
Hornet has a couple of dealers in Canada, although I'm not sure if they ship or not. Burnwater appears to have a Canadian storefront online and is another well-known reputable paddle brand. I will do some more research and check with our Canadian friends :) -- Rae
Paddle zone in Quebec online sells hornet paddles
Do you retract your top arm's scapula (all the way down?)
Palm grips all the way!
So your talking about your outside hand is the fulcrum. The left pushes the lever. Got it!! Thanks
whos the dude in the background...............................
I am ready to boggie and get this boat thing done
My seniors taught us to bend more than 30 degrees during set up. Is it okay?
Do you do any actual on the water examples? There was a previous comment about you sitting very upright, which was my first thought (upright and robotic). Jeff is it, that does a fluid sample of paddling? He is leaning into the catch, which I believe is a natural movement, it also ensures you bury your blade on the catch. I would be interested in watching you fully bury your blade - in the water - while sitting straight up. Another note, a pitfall I find common (not mentioned in your video) is the "J" stroke, particularly with anyone going from a canoe/rowing to a dragon boat. I know you mentioned keeping your top hand over the water, but as the stern on my boat, I've often reminded new paddlers to keep the top hand out. I'm interested in seeing any videos you put out regarding one of your viewer's comments about dragging the paddle at the back of the stroke, also where there should be a nano pause going into the catch, breaking a habit of taking that pause at the exit stage.
❤️👍😊
When I was a kid, team sports for girls were few and selective. I love the team dynamic of working out together and socializing in tandem! I also see the older (than me) paddlers as role models of being active and disciplined indefinitely.
Empowerment to overcome cancer movement limitations
What do you call that wood (semi-paddle) attached to the machine?
Not a swimmer or water person? Me neither! But after the local club had an open house where you can try: dragon boating, outrigger, kayaking, voyageur canoe, SUP: I was hooked! It was a toss up between outrigger and dragon boat. I went for the dragon boat. Joined a "Learn To" group which quickly transitioned into a competitive team. I LOVED it and it felt great to try something new and to step out of my comfort zone. And I am a complete non swimmer at 63 yrs old. If you're thinking about ....just do it!!
Wow!! I wish I'd seen this a few years ago....when I was just starting dragon boating. Never being a swimmer, water person or boater I decided to step out of my comfort zone and give it a try. I joined a 6 week Learn To group which immediately transitioned into a competitive team. Sadly because of Covid our two regattas were cancelled. I bought a rowing machine so I could stay in practice. I continued to work my job as a prep cook but I ended up with a small tear in my rotator cuff. I wondered if paddling was a contributing factor. It's not causing as much pain as it did for a year (before I was diagnosed) but I don't think I would be ready to go back to paddling for awhile. However, I did find this 'stacking' video very informative. I thought your demonstration of Rotating vs Bending Forward was an excellent piece of info and makes so much sense!!! I sat on my couch going through the motions and wish I'd seen your videos back when I was still paddling.
