Welcome to Coastal Ireland: Heritage and Place.
This channel is all about Irish history, landscapes, documentary film making, and the Archaeology of Ireland.
People living along the coasts of the Republic of Ireland have a history and culture that is both connected to, and different from, that of the mainland.
There are three types of films here: 3-4 min films focused on Irish heritage site, 3-8 min films exploring the Irish landscape, and longer 8 min plus films centered on Irish history, heritage, and music.

We are two professors at the University of Notre Dame who have worked together for many years. Ian is an archaeologists-historian in the Department of Anthropology. Bill is a professor in Film, Television and Theater, and a film maker and filming guru.

Inishbofin Ferry: Island Adventure
For most people conversations about Inishbofin illicit memories of summer ferry rides in bright sunshine, open skies, and the deep blue of the ocean. Today the Island Adventure provides regular service to Inishbofin, and on a clear summer day, stunning views of the mountains of Connemara, High Island, and the coastline. If you watch this film you will see John Concannon, an islander who grew up fishing along Inishturk, Inishbofin and Inishark, and in his later years helped to run the ferry with his family.

St Colman's Abbey

This film is focused on St. Colman Abbey, Inishbofin, Col. Galway, Ireland. St. Colman’s has the remains of 14th/15th century stone church and was founded by followers of St Columba, who first founded a community of monks on Iona Island in northern Scotland. St. Colman is surrounded by an active cemetery.
Clochán Leo: An Early Medieval Community

This film is focused on Clochán Leo, a stunning small 7-11 century oratory enclosed by a stone enclosure wall and entrance on the north-east side. This structure was excavated by an international team of archaeologists from America (University of Notre Dame), Ireland, and Canada from 2015-2019.
The Rock Outcrop of Dún Gráinne, Inishbofin, Co. Galway

This film looks at Dún Gráinne, situated on a rock outcrop to the south of Westquarter village. On the top of the outcrop are the remains of several hut circles radiocarbon dated to the Bronze Age, as well as stone fortifications dating to the Cromwellian period that served as a gun platform.

This film is focused on St. Colman’s church, built between 1910 and 1913, situated near the old pier of the main harbor of Inishbofin. The church is open most days for public visits and is actively used by community members. This film is centered on St. Leo’s Church, Inishark, Col. Galway, Ireland. Used right up to 1960, the now roofless stone church was built in late 19th century on the remains of an 11th century church.
