What if you do the speedrun for Half-Life 2 on your old computer?
I do plan to get a VGA capture card and record gameplay directly (as well as speedrun attempts, though as of now I don't have a massive amount of speedrunning experience and I will have to learn. I know some glitches in HL1 but not many in HL2)
*This never get old. half-life 2 story taking place 20 years later. this camera and PC networks taking place in video from 20 years later. what a insane! Gaming never get old. always fresh. Just like freeman!*
TY
Authentic P4 jet engine noise. Takes me back.
TY, it also is capable of heating my room. If I wake up and it is cold, I can render a video or play a game on it for a while and it will get to room temperature again in a scary short amount of time. My CPU has a TDP of 115 watts 0.0
@@fiveleggedspider Hey, it's not waste heat if you're using it.
@@compmanio36 LMAO, dual purpose machine. In the summer my air conditioner actually has to fight it if I turn it on and use it too long
From what i remember it was very heavy on the Pentium 4, you'll need like 3.0- 3.2 Ghz P4 and even then it will drop below 40 fps from time to time, the game was ahead of its time.
Oh yeah, this thing's a 3.4GHz and I can still only get to 64FPS in the Lost Coast benchmark even at 800x600 medium settings. That's what I decided to stick with, the game still hiccups and has some problems but I refuse to make it look like a potato or go down to 640x480. I should also mention that it's using a GeForce 6800 256MB
@@fiveleggedspider Yes, games from 2004 and above were simply starving for a dual core cpu's, i remember switching from a 2Ghz P4 to an Athlon 64 x2, the difference in hl2 was night and day.
@@patrickc8007 100%, I have an Athlon II X2 250 PC and it is insanely fast on there. I also have an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ machine coming in the mail, so TY for the sneak peek in performance :>
@@fiveleggedspider What build of the game? I have a build from 2004, it is less demanding, although there is no multithread support.
@@стефанкапинос It is Half-Life 2 build 2257546. It does shockingly well on older hardware while also supporting a lot of the newer features like multithreading. I got it a while ago by reverting my HL2 install to a previous build and then copying over the files to my WinXP machine
Best could be stick to Windows 98SE and put there GeForce 4 MX440 or 4Ti and play older games. For XP best is to use at least Core 2 Duo/Phenom II cpu's with fast PCIe videocard.
TY, and I agree, I've found XP isn't too bad on Pentium 4/Athlon XP/Athlon 64 systems but that is my personal experience. I have quite a few Pentium III machines now, and so I've been trying to make each one somewhat different to have more variety. I have one that runs Windows 2000, one that runs Windows ME, and one I will soon be installing Windows 98 SE on. Started to run out of different Windows versions to go with LMAO
@@fiveleggedspider But for example Gothic II at city at 300% drawing distance can put on its knees even fast Pentium IV (like 640 for Socket 775) or Athlon 64. For some later XP games from 2006 could be also good to have a lot of cpu power. Pentium IV and Athlon XP could be great for Windows 98SE, it can be very smooth on them.
@@modernandretrogaming I have never personally played Gothic II, though looking up the release date and seeing game footage, yeah I could see a CPU running at clock speeds much, much higher (as well as architectural changes) than what was around when it was released not running it better as a problem. I also have personal experience to back that up, Half-Life 2 has problems at any settings higher than 800x600 medium details on my Pentium 4 550. I also have a Dell OEM GeForce 6800 (standard PCI-e version) in it, so that may be a contributing factor to its speed though in my experience the speed at higher resolutions depends more on the CPU than the video card. Unfortunately, I do not have a Core2Duo system at the moment (I'd like to have an E8600), if I did I also have a BFG nVidia GeForce 7950 GT OC I could throw in there and I know there is no way that is going to be stuck at 800x600 in HL2 LMAO
Has that authentic early-mid 2000s feel down to the edition and the camera quality
TY!
same!
how'd you get it on such a old machine?
I don't know if it still works, but used to you could go to the game options for HL2 and most of the expansions and revert to the previous build. You can then copy the files to your XP machine, make some shortcuts and it will run out of the box
*ask same from valve software too. because E3 Demo was valve 2000s PC hard drives. they did save them.*

My 8 core Mac Pro broke down on me a couple months ago and they won't repair it. I need to get a new computer for editing, can I transfer 16GB DDR2 memory to a Compaq laptop??
I am sorry to hear that, that is awful. If you can give me the model number of the laptop I can take a look and see what max RAM is officially supported but also see if someone has managed to exceed that at some point, sometimes PCs will take upgrades that they say they won't take and do just fine

i remember reading the back of alot of pc game boxes saying pentium 4 3.2ghz recommended, wouldve felt godly to have back then to reach those mystic numbers
ty, it is quite fast, and also doubles as a space heater LoL. Above 3.2GHz and they start running fairly hot, I believe the Pentium 4 I'm using has a TDP of 115 watts
@@fiveleggedspider my shitrig is the same too, warms up my bedroom like no other heater ever does from its passive cooling. Im not a computer man as you are, I just remember specifically the Medal of Honor Pacific Assault specs requiring what you built amongst other games. I'd love an XP or a 98 rig one day for DOS/95 games
@@TheDzhoel That is wild, what kind of passive cooling are you using? Also as far has XP/98SE era goes there is a large in-between area from 2000 to about 2003 or 2004 where drivers were made for 98SE and XP both. For DOS games you just need to make sure you have something with decent OPL support like a SoundBlaster Vibra 16S (16C is sometimes OK but not true OPL2/3), or an ESS AudioDrive 1868 or 1869. I mention those here because that's about all that's affordable, there are all sorts of other solutions though. If you wanted one machine for both XP and 98SE at once, dual-boot or having a 3.5" hdd caddy installed in the front of the case to switch hdds are probably the best options. I say 98SE because I have found it's best to avoid the initial release of Windows 98 LOL
quakliv :)
Bone crushing
Nice :)
Man, imagine if they still made drives with disks this tall and you could get them with today's density: 20TB in a standard-thickness 3.5" disk; so one this big might bring you, say... 100 TB! Or maybe even more, like 150, if this disk is wider than 3.5" (which I can't really tell)!
It is a full-height 5.25" drive so I would 100% say it would be 150TB at least LMAO
The largest capacity 5.25-inch drive ever put into production. Designed for both high capacity and high access speed- hence the large amount of platters. Apparently the product line started at CDC's Oklahoma City operation which later became Imprimis and was eventually purchased by Seagate.
Man I so want one of these, unfortunately have no machines that would fit in it with a CD ROM and floppy drive.
If you started with Socket 7 system and coudn't afford new board, K6-2 and 3dfx was the best you could do. And going from Pentium 166 with 32 MB Ram and S3 Trio to this would sure make you feel the difference.
1998ish?
Indeed, it is meant to be ca. 1998/Very early 1999. The CPU is the only part that doesn't quite match, being a mobile K6-2+ 550MHz underclocked to 400MHz. I'm still happy to take the extra speed boost from it though.
Nice balanced setup! Every other piece compliments the others. Balance :)
lowkey miss having one of those dimension cases on the desk, i owe my childhood to one. theyre old enough to just look retro/stylish now too... ik i have some spare parts lying around so maybe i need to build myself something similar 😅 thanks for this
Ty! I used to have a Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4GHz Dell Dimension 2400 that I upgraded to 2GB of RAM and put a PCI nVidia GeForce 6200 in to try to stretch out its functional lifespan as far as possible LOL. It is crazy that these are even retro now, time flies.
What game is that?
Quake Live, though I've changed the config to be closer to something that pros use (all bright green Keel for enemy models, gun is not visible, and I am using vertex lighting).
modern pcs losing out on features that we used to have actually does suck honestly. probably in the future they'll take the front facing headphone jack too
My old main PC (Dell G5 5587, Core i7 8750H, GTX 1060 6GB) does not have an HDD LED and it drove me bonkers for the 4 years I used it. When the PC is loading something and it looks like it has stopped for a while, there is no indicator lamp to see if the storage is being used and that it is still loading. The only way to do that is to open task manager and see what the disk usage statistics are. I could understand the loss of CD drives as really they are technically obsolete, but not having a disk indicator lamp blows my mind.
I want to do an AliExpress build out of mine, but the depth is too shallow for a 2011 cooler. Also not having the HDD where you put your intake fan makes my eye twitch, but I get it (I put a 3060 in an Inspiron 620 case).
Oh yeah, it sucked to find out that I couldn't install my SSD with the original mounting bracket if I installed that intake fan. I was afraid of temps rising where the case is somewhat small, so I decided to go with the weird setup I have now. That is awesome by the way, I used to have an Inspiron 620 that I put a 1050Ti in back in the day but kept the original mb with the Core i5 2310.
@@fiveleggedspider After a power outage my original board (620) gave up, so I put a H570M in there. I might use spacers to get a 92mm fan upfront, otherwise I'm stuck use an 80mm pendant oriented to avoid the front I/O wiring. I thought about doing a video, but I cheaped out with a white Vetroo cooler so it looks out of place. Surprisingly everything worked with no mods.
@@zeroturn7091 Oh yeah power surges eat PCs for breakfast :( It is really shocking how little modification a lot of these OEM cases need to put custom motherboards in them, and to put OEM motherboards in custom cases.
Nice build! How many hz is your display? Also you'd be surprised by how much less input delay you get at insane framerates (over 500), even if your monitor can't support it.
Ty, I have a 165hz display, and the much higher framerate does really help. I have Quake maxxed out to 250FPS, reducing input delay anywhere you can is essential. I have my keyboard polling rate set to 8000hz and my mouse is set to 1000hz, in a vain attempt to compete with the awesome pros on Quake.
Love the sleeper build
ty!
this is sick as hell
ty!
Modern Old school.
Ty, my favorite way of doing things with newer PCs.
Sleeper build goes hard Only thing, you might want to make sure your thermals are good, those cases in particular are hotboxes.
Ty! I have been keeping an eye on them. My CPU maxxed out at around 70C, and my GPU maxxed out to 65c give or take. Not amazing results but having both an intake and an exhaust fan seems to keep it stable. The vent on the bottom just above the USB ports does surprisingly well when an intake fan is installed.
@@fiveleggedspidermy 3060 run the same temps as yours, so it's fine (it's a modern case with six 12 cm fans)
@@maklogetrich2378 Ty for letting me know! I lucked out that the airflow through this case seems to be just enough to keep what I have in it cool. I bet your PC is super quiet, when you have a lot of large fans like that you can afford to run them at lower RPMs without losing airflow. I only have an 80mm intake fan and a 92mm exhaust fan so I have to run them both at full throttle (connected by molex with no thermal control) to keep the temps stable LOL. I wouldn't say mine is at jet engine levels however you can definitely hear when it is running.
@@fiveleggedspider not really quiet actually, but yes, it can run at lower speed and higher speed, but I guess for 3060 it's still fine
@@maklogetrich2378 Ye, they don't need a whole lot from what I've seen so far with mine. Quiet or not it sounds like you have a really nice PC :D
run your rig, not your mouth... thats what I always say
I agree with that sentiment. I have my own biases, but at the end of the day it is to each his own. Newer PC designs look awesome, and people put a lot of hard work into making those builds look the way they do, it is just not my personal style :)
@@fiveleggedspider the sleeper builds are really tight. I think I might do one with a mid 2000s gateway black case now
@@banguseater That sounds sick! Gateway had some cool looking PCs around that time. The towers they made are nice, have plenty of airflow through them too if I remember right.
yes very modern SO SCRUMPTIOUS
Ty, indeed LMAO
hey, this actually looks so cool but i had a question. were the light and power button connectors proprietary? i wanna make a similar build, but i don't want to take apart my computer to find out it's incompatible with the case.
Ty! So for this case the connectors are proprietary, but it wasn't too bad. I just unclipped the contacts from the big connector they were attached to, and put them into smaller standard connectors from another ATX case I had. The wires were very easy to trace to each LED and the power button. The front USB 2.0 ports on this PC use a standard cable. I am unable to use the audio jack on the front panel because it is an entirely proprietary connector, so I just unclipped the contacts from the little connector that plugs into the front panel USB/3.5mm PCB. All the changes I made to the case are entirely reversible, in case I ever wanted to put an old Dell motherboard back in it.
@@fiveleggedspider that actually sounds really interesting! would it be possible to ask you for any help if i were to do a similar mod myself?
@@star_greeeen I could make a video on it at some point if you wanted. The biggest pain about it is not breaking the little plastic clips that hold the contacts in, I usually just slide a razor blade under the plastic clip very gently and tilt up slightly to be able to pull the contact out. After that you can slide it into an empty ATX clip and it will click into place. The contact block that connects to the USB header works exactly the same way, though the contacts and clips are tiny so it is harder to do.
@@fiveleggedspider sorry for the late reply, but that sounds great. if you are able to, definitely make one, i've been trying to locate a tutorial for a while now and i can't really find anyone
