Excellent as always!
huh I didn't expect the PLA to use Katanas. Like it sounds more like a Sino Japanese war battle than 1979. Was this common enough during the 1979-1989 wars or even earlier?
I also cry when i dont get a new gun. Its totally understandable.
How many have fallen under the spell of Fan Fan.😅
“THE ONE WITH THE RIFLE SHOOTS”
There's still a lot of pillboxes left in Qinhuangdao, though many have drifted with the sands or been eaten by the sea now.
19:12 Bierut didn't die of a heart attack, he got ill while in Moscow with Pneumonia and died there. He wasn't young nor very strong. His family has confirmed it too. Also, he knew everything, since he has survived The Polish Action of 1937 because he was locked in the Polish prison. All other Polish Communists of the KPP have either been executed or were sent to gulag camps.
Thanks so much! People back then really must have made of tougher stuff. From what I've heard, by the time he read the speech he was already in a hospital bed (i.e. essentially on his deathbed)?
Sonic damage?
I’ve become addicted, with the one exception of subtitles being sometimes janky. I may have to contribute to the cause… The stories are great, the translated proverbs are golden even after translation, and the thoughts, ideas, and tales really change my perspective. :)
Can I just say how much I appreciate that you pronounce Beijing correctly as bay-jing, not the usual way that it is pronounced in media i.e. bay-zhing and that I hope you will help normalise the actual pronunciation. Little annoyances that you don't notice until they're gone.
Thanks, I'm right there with you. You've probably heard me gripe before about the Audible editions of Chinese history books where the narrator pronounces, say, "Cixi" as "Kick-see." It's like a little finger flick in my eyeball every time.

Ah yes the type 54 I love all tokarev and tokarev adjacent pistols they are all super smooth shooters!
My father in law was a translator for the Chinese military on and off throughout his life. born in north vietnam of chinese ancestors , he went to China in 1949 . He was one of ten sibling and the only one that left Vietnam. He could read and speak Mandarin, Cantonese , Vietnamese and his village language fluently . My wife would tell me when she was young he would be gone for long periods at times. only when she was older did she find out where he went. they immigrated to the US in the mid 80's . Although he was not a staunch commie, he told me many times he wished they had stayed in China. i am sure he had a counterpart on the Vietnamese side also . Lots of Chinese Vietnamese are still in Vietnam to this day .
This is FASCINATING stuff! Thank you!
@@Type56_Ordnance_Dept Le Duan purged all Chinese before the sino-vietnamese war and led to the Boat People crisis (one beautifully tragic movie about it called Boat People (1982)) because he was emboldened by the USSR to pursue a more independent Vietnam which was lambasted by the Chinese as revisionist.
Mr. survivor, you still have flag in your rifle chamber. Don't forget to remove the flag before firing.
I was in the middle of thinking your cadance is very cunty but as you speak authoritatively I can dig it; you made the Leroy Jenkins reference and that makes you well rounded in my book.
Was your TT-33 Tokarev pistol on the California pistol roster?
I would love to hear your take on the type 81 . Sounds like they sorted out the problems of the type 63 . They also went to a stamped reciver and caved in to the pistol grip and bayonet removal . Its much softer to shoot than an sks but a bit chunky There isnt much online about it more than suface info , its a shame , i love that rifle

@@jabbles1029 Welcome! I'm so glad you're here!
2:51 So true, my first rifle was indeed a Norinco SKS 😂
Great video as always! There’s a film called 《长排山之战》 about a similar company-scale assault on Changpai mountain. It was based on the combat history of 41st Corp of Guangzhou Military District. Great depiction of infantry tactics of both sides. Partly because the film was * intended * as a military instruction video from the beginning.
Thanks for these videos. You have educated me about the PLA and I respect the heck out of them, it's very different but much more formidable than I used to think.
I really liked the "empty chamber" range safety flag. Great story. Thanks.
* doom music *
Excellent presentation!
Was the doctrine of assigning mid-high level COs to lead small infantry assaults REALLY such a boon to the PLA? I understand the military and ethical need for NCOs, and lower level COs, to lead from the front, but sending a capable Major to personally lead a half-platoon sized infantry element in the attack seems wasteful to me. I know you say (paraphrasing) "if they die the next man will assume command with just as much skill", but only so many men have the character and skills to be a capable infantry officer. So it seems wasteful to me. Maybe I am wrong and PLA fighting spirit is actually all that. You do touch on this towards the very end of the video, but it seems to me the cost will outweigh the benefit of sending capable infantry COs to die in such a way. Bottomless supply narratives make me sceptical.
This is my favorite channel going right now. You're a great presenter!
@ContinentalFan I'm so glad to have you aboard!
Will we be getting a video on the Norinco Type 86 (aka Type 86S)? I believe it to be the precursor/proof of concept to the QBZ-95 that the PLA is currently using.
😂😂😂😂😂😂 the intro is unhinged 😂
DO YOU WISH DEATH UPON THE RUNNING DOGS OF CAPITALISM, COMRADE?! ARE YOU A GOOD SOCIALIST STEEPED IN THE TRADITION OF COMRADES LENIN AND MAO?! Also you are like a Chinese Goodman Svejk, except American.
34:30 I'm pretty sure that was also Yugoslavia's doctrine for the whole Cold War era
That brief anecdote about the Tokarev pistol is 100% factual those guns are absolute sleepers
We used to say "lead from the front, get shot in the back".
12:33 And I'm thinking hang on they both have red flags
Happy New Year! Down with the non salad bringers!
Enjoyable and informative. Liked and shared. With that said . . . We're not the only major power that Vietnam has kicked out. The Domino Effect was a canard. National pride trumps political ethos every time. Socialist and communist countries are just as factional, contentious, and argumentative as democratic or monarchist ones. There is no unity of thought or purpose among them. In other words, there is no honor among thieves. Kissinger was wrong. Admitting it is the first step to global domination. The Chinese/Vietnamese war was both short and brutal. Again, the sides were badly matched. Again, national pride trumped political ethos. "We march together under a single banner!" rapidly degenerated into "get out mah country, foreigner!" We'd say the same if it happened to us.
"For salad!"
there is something oddly endearing about Stephen doing Blues Clues style openings in a video about one of the most horribly pointless conflicts of the 20th century
The funniest (maybe only funny) part of this conflict for me is that from my understanding, the official Chinese stance is seemingly claiming a moral victory - despite not accomplishing any of their political objectives "we sure showed 'em".
Well, that depends on what the actual objectives were. At least from what I have read (from online randos, so take it with a lot of salt), it was never intended to occupy any part of Vietnam. There were several objectives: to disuade Vietnam from operating in Cambodia (yes, the Khmer Rouge was horrible, but realpolitik is a helluva drug), to discredit Soviet Union's military alliance with Vietnam, to assuage ASEAN's fear against Vietnam and China and demonstrate that China is really in US' camp, and (probably most importantly), to demonstrate what a clusterf*ck PLA had become after the sh*tshow that was the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution and that deep reforms were desperately needed. So what was the end result after the invasion plus around 10 years of artillery duel and small unit actions? Vietnam didn't actually withdraw, so that's an L. The Soviet Union didn't actually come to the aid of Vietnam (probably because they have more pressing concern in the form of Afghanistan), so maybe a W? ASEAN and the US were a lot more friendly to China after this episode, so also maybe a W? More importantly, PLAGF's performance was far below expectation, and many glaring flaws were exposed. So for that, maybe a personal W for the Honorary Chairman of Chinese Contract Bridge Association, but a massive L for the PLAGF. In the end, was it a W for the PLA? Probably not. Was it a W for China? Maybe? But what I know is that it has far-reaching consequences, even today. For example, there is a reason why Vietnam picked Japan for its North-South HSR project over China... at least until Japan dropped the ball big time, and they are forced to go with Chinese standard instead. As for the reason, well, *gestures upward*.
Anyone else get a Michael Scott mixed with a gun dude vibe? Cuz i love it
Finally! Finally this one have a major personal connection to me. My dad was drafted back in 1981 a few months before his 18th birthday for 3 years fighting the Chinese. His section and time at the front was a "lucky one" where things were quite quiet.
@Lustanda Holy cow, I'm glad he had a quiet time, if both for your family's sake and for our channel! You are one of our few connections to the VPA/PAVN side of things!
@@Type56_Ordnance_Dept Thank you. He don't talk much about the war which from what I can confer from popular culture means that he didn't lie about his service there. But a few stories here and there leaks through. About how this one time he and a bunch of his friends went AWOL and drinking in a village when the PLA started pounding his unit positions or the hill over, I don't recall exactly but fire was incoming. So my dad and his friend has to run as fast as they can back to the unit - TOWARD THE ARTILERY BOMBARDMENT - or else the MP in the rear will caught them going AWOL when the MP do their sweep for deserters. They made it to the unit but NO ONE WAS THERE, save for a few guys who got the job of staying behind and watching over stores and supplies that can't be quickly brought along. My dad discovers that the entire unit have gone up to defensive positions (what in the current Russo - Ukraine conflict is called "the 0 line"). So then my dad had to AGAIN run toward the arty fire to the defensive positions, bringing with them what ever supply they can from home base to make up a cover story. I can't confirm what he brought with him at the time but he was in the heavy weapon platoon manning the 12.7mm heavy machine gun so what he brought with him can't be that light. He did how ever mentioned that during the entire run, from village to the encampment to the defensive positions he was unarmed because he didn't bring it with him and the unit took all arms save for some ammo and supply with them when they head out from camp. Other than that it was mostly story of him faking stomach illness to get to the rear and visiting home because 3 years of sitting in a hole on top of a mountain waiting for that one Chinese shell with your name on it isn't healthy. And his unit was supposed to be recuited from the better areas as in the center of Hà Nội and everyone finished highschool so the men don't take too kindly to harsh condition, or at least take it lying down. Lucky for me that Chinese shell did not exist for my dad, so after 3 years he got discharged. Just so next year my dad's neighboring division got ABSOLUTELY REKT'd at the battle of Vị Xuyên (LaoShan mountain). His unit was Regiment 246th of the 346th division. I can't recall the battalion that he served with but he was with the heavy weapons platoon.
@@Lustandathank you for sharing!!!
If only they didn't view golf as a decadent capitalist sport, imagine the offensive potential of a PLA officer with a golf bag!
Like if the PLA had some Coldstream Guards DNA spliced into itself.
The Tokarev should feel good in the hand. It is, after all, inspired by both the Browning 1903 and Colt 1911 (also designed by John Browning), blending features of both and simplifying them, while adapting them to a hot loading of the 7.63x25mm Mauser round. This is because Russian officers, from the late Tsarist era forward into the 1930s loved both the Mauser C96 Broomhandle and the Browning 1903... but the original 1903 operating system (unlocked blowback) wouldn't handle the pressures of the Mauser round (much less the hotter loading of it that the Red Army wanted to use), so Tokarev modified the Browning 1903 design to use the 1911 short recoil, swinging link system. The concealed hammer of the 1903 was exposed (allowing the production simplification of deleting the thumb safety and grip safety), and the fire control.grouo made a removabke unit for ease of repair. The TT30 and TT33 are reliable, sturdy guns that feel great in the hand, because they are based on two of the better designs of the guy then acknowledged as one of, if not the, best seniauto handgun designers of the era, combined with a cartridge with a solid and proven track record in combat. Aside from the lack of a manual safety in the military models☆ , it would definately be in the top three or so military semiauto handguns available on the 1930s, instead of a solid position amongst the top 10 - and it would still be a viable (if woefully obsolescent) choice today. . ☆ Note, most of the ones in the US have kit-bashed "safeties" added to meet US import rules - they generally are ugly, awkward, and not very good... but they do meet the letter of the law of the regulations created under 1968 Gun Control Act.
I have a modern production Zastava M70A and it’s genuinely one of the nicest guns I’ve ever shot, it fits in my small ass hands like a glove and has never once malfunctioned
@@jzimmerman284 THIS!!!!
@geodkyt That explains so much. I know that every kook out there wants somebody to make a repro of his favorite C&R oddball gun, and then poor Ian has to make a video explaining why it would be economic suicide, BUT ... this is making me think of how much I would love a chopped, slightly modernized TT-33 as a CCW gun, like a Tokarev Commander.
Aw man, this one was a real emotional roller coaster. When he got the katana and the order to bloody it, I got a tingle from just how bad ass it was. Then after marvelling at the ridiculous conditions and challenges they had to go through.... The pang of sadness at the fate of commander Liu hit me like a bullet. The sweetheart at home, left without her brave soldier... Forgive me if I'm wrong but I thought your eyes were misty as you had to tell us of the ultimate fate of Liu... Or it was just my eyes sweling with sadness. As always I'm grateful that you share with us the course, in good ol' communist spirit. Here's to the new year of our Chinese SKS courses!
