Fiber Optics | STOP lightning damage from Cable Modem | How I protected my customer's network
Here's a creative solution that I used to keep my client's network from getting zapped by lightning through their cable modem service. They had lightning damage several times and nothing I tried seemed to help, until NOW!
I intercepted the patch cable that runs between the cable modem and their network switch and converted it to a fiber optic connection. That way, energy from any lightning strikes can not travel from the cable modem to the rest of their network equipment.
I purchased a Gigabit Network Media Converter, (2) SFP adapters and a fiber optic cable to protect their network. I later changed out the Media Converter with a 6-Port SFP capable gigabit switch because the cheap $21 Media Converter was introducing problems into the network (packet loss, VOIP phone were going offline, etc). Everything worked PERFECTLY after installing the higher-quality switch.

      Yes, follow the instructions in that video at the 1:55 mark. Here's a link that will start the video at the correct spot: th-cam.com/video/7ceHpGlhp9E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=StcwQ91lf1b_hOgl&t=115 After it secure erases the drives and begins to setup Windows, you will get prompted to join a network and connect to a Microsoft account. Sometimes there is a way to choose "I don't have Internet" or "Continue with limited setup", but sometimes it won't. If you don't want to join a network or add a Microsoft account, use the BYPASSNRO trick I show in this video: th-cam.com/video/UdyP_bHSUlE/w-d-xo.html I hope everything works well for you! I'm not sure if the "Reset this PC" program performs a power check before allowing the reset process to move forward. I recommend that you leave the laptop plugged into the charger the entire time "Reset this PC" is running. If the laptop has an older Mechanical hard drive, it might take 2-10 hours to complete the secure erase procedure on the hard drive. The laptop may not be able to boot into Windows if the process gets interrupted in the middle. If you end up running the program on the battery, do so at your own risk. Good luck with it! -- Jason

      @JasonBagnell 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! Yes, some people just turn off the PC when it gets to the point where it asks to join a network and/or enter a Microsoft account. The next person can continue the installation from there the next time it boots up. If you instead want to finish the Windows Setup process, get to the Desktop screen and check the PC out before turning it over to the new owner, try the "BYPASSNRO" trick I mention in this video: th-cam.com/video/UdyP_bHSUlE/w-d-xo.html Once you issue the command, the computer should reboot and then allow you to continue the installation without requiring an Internet Connection or a Microsoft Account. Would it be possible to recover data on an SSD?

    • @JasonBagnell
      @JasonBagnell วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! If you use the "Clean Data: Yes" and "Remove Everything" option, you should be good. Some people say that SSD drives can automatically return spare storage locations back to active storage, but I think it would be VERY unlikely that any of your data would be compromised that way. The SSD Drive manufacturers usually have a utility program that can be used to secure erase the drive by removing the drive's current encryption key, but I don't think you can run that command while booted into the Windows operating system on the same drive. Some motherboards also have a secure erase procedure built in, but you would end up without a working copy of Windows on the drive if you used either of these methods. I hope this helps! -- Jason :)

      @JasonBagnell 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! Running "Reset this PC" does not require you to log out of your Microsoft account first and it will not remove the data (in the "cloud") from your Microsoft account. If you use the "Remove everything" option, no traces of your previous Microsoft Account or Data will be present on the system. If you use the "Keep my files" option, it's possible that the files that were in your Desktop, Documents, Video, and Pictures folders will be retained on the system. If you are selling the PC to another person or discarding it (throwing it out), the best options to use are: "Remove everything" and "Clean data: Yes. That way all of your personal files/data will be secure-erased from the PC. Thanks -- Jason

    • @JasonBagnell
      @JasonBagnell 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! Try using the BYPASSNRO trick mentioned in this video during the Windows Setup process to see if it will allow you to reach the Windows desktop without requiring an Internet connection or a Microsoft Account: th-cam.com/video/UdyP_bHSUlE/w-d-xo.html If you CAN reach the Windows desktop, see if you are able to connect to WiFi (or use a LAN cable) to access the Internet. If not, go to another computer and pull up the webpage for your exact PC's make/model, go to the drivers section and download either the WiFi Adapter drivers or Ethernet (using network patch cable) drivers and copy them onto a USB flash drive. Then take the flash drive and plug it into the PC you're having trouble with. Run the driver's installation file and hopefully the Internet connection will be restored. The Windows Update program will continue to download/install the other drivers for you PC once it can access the Internet. If you can't reach the Windows Desktop, you'll need to use the other PC to download the network adapter driver but you'll need to EXTRACT the contents of the .EXE file onto the flash drive so the files will be directly available to the Windows Setup program. It gets a little complicated at this stage so let me know if you need further assistance and I'll try to write back soon. Thanks -- Jason

    • @JasonBagnell
      @JasonBagnell 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! I sounds like the "Reset this PC" program didn't work too well on your PC for some reason. There are two things you can try to get Windows running again. Try first: If you get to the Windows login screen and see the Restart button on the bottom right corner of the screen, hold down your Shift key and then click "Restart". That will cause the PC to boot into the recovery environment. You will be able to find "Reset this PC" in the recovery environment and run it from there. Here's a short video I made about how to reach the Recovery Console that way: th-cam.com/video/g6PllTROKAE/w-d-xo.html If you don't have that option, you can power off (or unplug) the PC 3 times WHILE it is booting up to Windows. That will cause the Windows troubleshooting screen to appear and the "Reset this PC" program should be one of the choices on the menu. Second, if that doesn't work and you have access to another Windows based computer, you can create a Windows Installation Media USB flash drive and then perform a Clean Install of the Windows operating system. Make sure you have saved a copy of any files you need to keep first. See the following videos for instructions on how to perform a Windows 10/11 clean install: For Windows 10: th-cam.com/video/bP03Y-l9NOM/w-d-xo.html For Windows 11: th-cam.com/video/ZMKl9wBJYD0/w-d-xo.html After doing that, the PC will be running a fresh copy of Windows. If you're selling or throwing out the PC, you should probably try running the "Reset this PC" program again to secure-erase the "unused" parts of the hard drive. I hope some of these suggestions are helpful! Let me know what ends up happening. Thanks -- Jason

    Kinda kool. I remember decades ago getting warnings about lightning - Do not use anything electrical including phones during a lightning storm. One could go poof in a not so good way. I always wondered if a well grounded lightning rod would take care of this issue though

    • @JasonBagnell
      @JasonBagnell 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! What's strange at my client's office is that everything is properly grounded. The big wire that comes from the utility company does run through a lightning arrestor that has a heavy copper wire that runs to ground. I think my "beam of light" solution will finally keep lightning out of their network. Each time is has happened, the Internet company has had to replace their cable modem and gateway, so I know that the problem is originating from the cable modem's coaxial cable input wire. Hi! Did you select and Delete the partition(s) from your D: drive (also known as Disk 1) during the Windows 11 setup process? If so, hopefully you didn't need any of the information contained on the drive. There are data recovery programs that can rebuild the partitions and restore them if that is the case. If you DID intend to erase your D: drive, you might need to open the Windows Disk Management program to recreate a new blank NTFS partition on the D: drive. Hi - Thank you for making this tutorial! I have a 2007 Intel motherboard running Win 10 with MBR format drive. I did mbr2gpt conversion so I could upgrade to Win 11 which requires UEFI firware but no boot device found after. The Intel Bios shows UEFI as Enabled. Looks like I have to reinstall Win 10 but I am also replacing the motherboard, cpu and ram. I did make a Recovery USB flash drive. Will the recovery drive allow me to install Win 10 or is it better to use your method with my Microsoft account that is linked to my digital license?

    • @JasonBagnell
      @JasonBagnell 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! A motherboard made in 2007 is not going to support any CPU that are required to run Windows 11. Win 11 requires a minimum of an 8th generation Intel CPU (or AMD equivalent) to install. There are methods that can "hack" the Win 11 installation to force it to install on older hardware but I don't recommend that you use them. You're really smart for figuring out that you needed to run the MBR2GPT command ;) . Windows 11 will not boot to a drive that is configured to use MBR and sometimes MBR drives to not appear as a boot device in the BIOS/CMOS/UEFI boot menu on newer computers. The recovery drive will only be useful for the system/motherboard it was created on. Since you're upgrading the CPU, MB and RAM, make sure you get something that is at least 8th generation or newer. Then you can install Windows 11. The Windows license linked on your Microsoft Account may or may not be transferrable to a different motherboard. I think your license will transfer if it is a full-blown Windows Retail license but I don't think any OEM (Major Manufacturer) licenses will transfer to different hardware. If you had Windows Home before, make sure to load that same version onto the new M/B so the versions will match. Good luck with your upgrade! -- Jason :)

      @@JasonBagnell Thank you for your response. I was hoping to get just the drive ready for the new motherboard by doing the mbr2gpt conversion but it didn't work for some reason. It was upgraded to Win 10 Pro. Can I reuse the Win 7 disk and product key or is it out dated now?

    • @JasonBagnell
      @JasonBagnell 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      From my experience, you can still use Windows 7 product keys when installing / upgrading to Windows 10 & 11. I think you'll be OK, but if not, I've used gamers-outlet.net to buy "legit" keys for under $10 each. Good luck with the upgrade! Jason
