Reliant Supervan 3 300 mile road trip to Rustival and back
Sadly the DVLA didn't sort the V5 for the Austin van in time for Rustival.
Cue my long suffering, but ever faithful Reliant Supervan 3 as we drive to Gaydon and back for the Rustival car show. Including our quick walk around the event.

    Hi guys loving the vlogs, I used to work for British Leyland as it was in the 70s. Love the balancing tool, we had similar but I used a piece of small bore rubber tube and my ears lol basic but effective. I was going to mention the carb synchronisation about loosening balance bar between carbs the use individual screws to balance but noticed someone else has told you. Love these engines, I had a marina tc coupe, had huge boot for my toolkit and welders at weekends when assisting others come mot time. One new tool you may consider new or secondhand is a gunsons pressure bleeder, once used you will wonder how you did without it, marina clutch was a nightmare to bleed, but that tool completed the job in literally seconds. If you do use a pressure bleeder only use about 3-5psi in tyre not like I did first time 35psi...wondering why plastic mastercylinder was ballooning lol. Best of luck guys, nice motors 😊

    16:00 make sure both throttle forks on the linkage are lose and then balance them. Once they are balanced then set them to engage the throttle plate at the same time. I like to set them with a bit of play either way of the linkage fork. You can't use the cable while lose as they are then independent. That's the way to base line them.

    Dad won the pools big time (£300), so he sold the Norton Big 4 and bought one of these. Luxury. As a self conscious teenager in the 70s, I was hugely embarrassed about it, and resisted the lift to school because Dad was passing that way, however, he insisted and I had to ride with him. I made sure that Dad dropped me off well out of sight from school so that none of my friends would see me. We would go on family adventures in this beast, usually to the seaside. I'm from Harrogate, so a day trip to Brid would take around 4 hours to get there, with mum in the passenger seat, and my sister and I sat on the wheel arches in the back. Yes, really safe. There was always a little bit of Reliant camaraderie, and all Reliant drivers would offer and return the forefinger salute from the steering wheel. Later, ironically, I had a Bond Bug, what an absolute hoot that was. Similar running gear and triple the laughs.

    For what it’s worth, my Traveller has electronic ignition which runs faultlessly. After leaving it a few years I had problems starting the car caused by the fuel pump gooed up with old fuel. Tapping helped sometimes but ultimately I took the top of the pump to bits & cleaned the valve mechanism - success! The other issue was choke cable corroding & not going fully back home, car running on choke & conking out. Not difficult to fix & so satisfying !!

    Why are you taking out the engine without the gearbox? You have more chances of damaging the friction plate when putting the engine back in. With MGBs the gearbox has to come out also!

    I did the old washer bottle dodge once. The bottle was mounted on the bulkhead with a manual squirter (to use the technical term) under the dash. I just connected the outlet from the bottle to the carb and relied on gravity feed. It seemed to work quite well. Thank goodness for petrol tank drain plugs.

    This would have to be one of the most instructive series of films showing the ins and outs of trouble shooting the A-Series (and B-Series for that matter) and other period engines. Well done, I've found these most instructive as I've just bought back by chance a 1967 MGB GT, I owned 36 years ago (older than you my good man).

    I'm in the middle of this job too, but got it a bit worse. Dried up, twisted bits of plastic fell from the timing cover, which I assume are the "rubber" shims. They're very hard and brittle for rubber... And the cam gear had chipped. I've also taken the opportunity, have the head off and weight off of the engine, to replace the manky engine mounts. What a job in situ with seized mount tower (metric) bolts. I managed with only one cut out. I've removed the radiator, but not the front end. My impact, I mean ratchet, extension fit through the starting hole and through the grille. 😅

    Test light can also be used for setting the ignition timing if you have points and condenser ignition. Not as accurate as a timing light though. Apparently you can use a multimeter to set the dwell angle (point gap).

  • @mervynsowman51
    @mervynsowman51 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think the coil only gets full voltage when engaging the starter as it bypasses the ballast. The low tension wires on the coil will have + & - on them. The + comes from the ignition switch. Old coils were marked sw & cb. Switch & circuit/contact breaker (points). I once see a wiring diagram for an immobiliser that worked by earthing it out. So even if they bypassed the ignition, it still wouldn't start.
