$500 VS $5000 Home Studio Challenge!
Recording music on a budget vs. a high-end setup-does expensive gear really make a difference? In this video, I put two home studio setups to the test: a 'broke' setup featuring free or affordable equipment and a 'rich' setup with premium microphones, fancy plugins, and top-tier gear. Using both setups, I record 'The TH-cam Song' and compare the results side by side. Whether you're a beginner looking to start recording music on a budget or an audiophile curious about the impact of expensive equipment, this fun BROKE vs. RICH challenge will answer the ultimate question: can you hear the difference? Watch until the end to see which setup wins!

Can i run Logic from the external drive? Or should I install it in the internal drive and store sounds and plugns in an external SSD?
Keep the apps and programs installed on your internal drive. This shouldn’t take up much space and will be less of a headache if your SSD goes missing 😅 I would save your song sessions, and possibly your library of samples on an external SSD.. my new MacBook has a 1TB drive so I’m okay with several samples being installed (usually just the most basic amount). When you create a new song or session just go to File > Save and select your external SSD or other designated drive for it to record to. I used to have an internal 256gb drive and it was a necessity for me to record externally just because I would reach full capacity when recording an album 😳 Hope that helps!
Good tips, dude! I usually buy things outright, but it's definitely good to know regardless should I go the montly payment route
Big budget has too loud drums. Completely ruined mix.
SUPERIOR Drums you might say 😉
I will not upgrade. I do mostly Podcast, layering some Musicparts underneath. A little bit Sounddynamics (Comp, EQ etc) and a little bit Mastering. For this Version 5 Artist is already Overkill. But my biggest Reason: As much as I love SO - I do not like the Leaning towards Yearly Lizenses - because thats what it really is: A Subscription. There are no real new Versions - its just "Adobe like" Updates. If I ever want to change a Thing - I will go to Reaper. Why? Its just a DAW. No AI, No nothing extra - all my Plugins are Universal Audio, Sonible and Waves and a a Bunch of others (I use just Compressor from SO for Ducking - i can do this easely with most Comps) - so, I personally need basically just a DAW - and Reaper is very good in beeing just that.
Anybody from NJ?
Thank you Chris.. It’s 3am right now and I just got up out of nowhere and went into my studio room all motivated out of nowhere, then just sat there and did nothing. Now I’m back in bed and found this video. It’s ME 100% . I really hope your channel keeps growing, everyone starting in studio one needs to watch your videos .
The best explanation of all and easiest way it is true. I hate when some people just talking and showing all kinds of crazy stuff, but still you don't get it. There are many ways to do drums, but this way is the easiest one and the best one from there you can do all other things as well
The budget set up cooked with the sm57
I want to get a customized sm7b thats my last big mic purchase tbh
It’s a GREAT mic! My wife doesn’t like it for her voice 😅 but it takes a punch and works on pretty much everything!
So I got the Studio 24c and registered it today, but that didn't unlock the software license. At least I can't see it in "My Products". Did I do anything wrong??
Presonus have dropped the Artist version of their software 🤔 I don’t work for Presonus but check your account on My.Presonus.com I believe you can still download the software from Presonus.. the first time you run the software it should ask for your code and if you want to link to your Presonus account
Also, depending on your budget of what you're going towards they both work really well
Probably a mixture of both would be great! I did notice the Audiobox had much noisier preamps when recording, and the in ear monitors had a lot less quality than the beyerdynamics.. not something I would have noticed if not going immediately to the nicer stuff 🤔
So they both sound good. It all depends how well you mix, but of course the studio one with the more expensive gear sounds much more crisp. I guess you would say! But overall they sound pretty good
Hope you enjoyed the video! 😁⚡️MY STUDIO GEAR: amzn.to/4g0h9E9 (Amazon)
Logic gives you free updates for life too
I’m heading that way for sure 😁
@ There’s a 90 day free trial for Logic, you should check it out
How to you make it to start recording a guitar track at certain point of timeline. Without having if start from the beginning? If I click on the part of the timeline I want it still jumps to the start
Very Helpful, you showed us how to use the tools in action rather just showing layouts . Good Job
Thanks for the kind words! 😁
oh the irony. you do know Studio one was developed by former Cubase designers i use Cubase but i can slide into studio One with ease. sadly ive done projects in both same song same raw audio same effects same mastering in the each daw and. S1 just sounds thin and took alot more tweaking to get it close to Cubase but like i always say the best DAW is the one that. works best for the individual
100% agree! Sometimes "upgrading" can help fill a gap or resolve an issue you run into, but gear is so good these days, you don't have to spend a ton of money. Especially for us regular home studio guys. One fun website to compare low end to high end mics is Audio Test Kitchen. There are definitely differences between the sound of some mics, but some you may be surprised how little difference there is in sound compared to the difference in dollars! Great video. Subscribed 👍
Straight up ... great points Chris ... appreciate your channel!!
Really felt this was clear and useful. Thank you.
Thanks 🙏🏾 for wonderful advice 👍🏾
Thanks for watching! 😁
Well... I agree with this video fully. However, and i may ahve just been lucky, but after watching a shit ton of video comparisons and reviews. I bought a lauten audio clarion mic and i am crazy crazy happy with it
I’ve heard great things about Lauten Audio! Glad you’ve had good results 🙂
I hated my $200 condenser mic then I realized I wasn't optimising its positioning, gain staging, my room, and other pre-recording steps. With experience, I downgraded to a $30 dynamic mic that gives me the sound I want. It's also superb in harsh & untreated environments. I said that to agree that gear shouldn't be an excuse. Equipment matters up to a certain point. Then the rest of the responsibility to make things sound good is yours.
What’s the name of this mix you got for 30$? I’d highly appreciate an answer
I was considering purchasing a new expensive mic a while back. But then I realized that Billie Eilish Ocean Eyes was performed on the AT2020, the $100 mic that I have. That put things back into perspective for me. Gear marketing can be tempting, but always look for a reason to not buy something. E.g. Why buy an expensive mic when I haven't written a song yet? 😅.
I guarantee if my wife sang into a $100 mic you’d be much more pleased with her voice that than me singing into a $1000 mic 😅 Gear can’t make up for talent and skill of the singer or musician (although I guess if you’re using auto-tune… then maybe so) 🤔🤖 😂
So I play in hotels with my cover band almost every day. We always bring our own PA Mains+Subs but the venues are all different and in many cases we play outside. The main mix coming out of the master out is calibrated with tonal balance control using references on the master eq of our mixer, but what do I do with the PA to have an optimal performance every day? We don’t have a sound guy. Thanks! Any advice would help. P.S. we don’t have an option to run pink noise in every venue before the show
Masterclass - Well done and so clear.
thanks
You speak the truth, Chris! Great stuff, salutations from grey and wet Ireland! ☘☮🤘🏽🤠👍🏽☮☘
Thanks for watching! 😁 Hope things are going well in Ireland ☘️
That's awesome that you wrote the song you guys danced to. I wrote the song that my wife walked down the aisle to. :)
Those moments are extra special! Thanks for watching 😁
Hey. Actually the DB app measures the pick values which is why it shows a bit higher compared to the real DB meter. Pick is usually 2-3 db more than tye Max value. So we can conclude that the app is accurate:)
Good to know! Thanks for sharing 😁
@ also look, seems the song you have played has no bass/deep bass. If you play a song containing deep hard bass the value showing in dbC should be much higher compared to dbA. If you happen to test this on a real db Meter not the app, please kindly let me know if my prediction was correct 😊

Its not about quality of music but the intention because god checks the heart of men and eagerly finding real worshipers who worship in spirit
How to dealt with with echoes room can eq solve that to eliminate some echoes?
Hi Chris, a HUGE THANK YOU for making this and all your other videos about Presonus Studio One ( I am using Presonus Studio One Artist )!!! You have a way of explaining/teaching/educating that no one else does! That is something I noticed right away about you! All serious musicians should find your teachings about how to record drums, guitars, keyboards, vocals, etc. at home, extremely valuable!!!! You are AWESOME! 😊
Thanks a lot for the kind words! Glad you enjoy the content 🙏
By your own admission, you're a lazy cheapskate. Nice to meet a kindred spirit. 😂
I've just tried this and from my analysis it is analysing the audio tone, frequency and overall quality to autonomously detect speech using AI to reword or resample the audio with a robotic voice by using the same similar tone as the original speaker. So it is not enhancing, it is basically recognising the speech tone, the words used and recreating it with a new audio file. Absolutely misreading to call it Audio Enhancement. Adobe should be taken to court for misleading it's customers.
Definitely has auto-tune “robotic” characteristics 🤔 I’m sure it’s free so they can have more access to human speech recordings
Dear Sir, Instead of promoting for Personus 7 is better to tell them to FIX THE CRASHING THAT IS AFTER EVERY CLOSE OF A PROJECT & DURING QUIT STUDIOONE 7 TOO, SHAME ON THEM IS VERY NORMAL THYE BECAME MANAGED BY FENDER WICH ARE MORE BAD, FENDER NOW CAN'T EVEN MAKE GOOD BASSES & GUITARS & OTHER BASS MANUFACTURES ALREADY PASSED THEM MINLES AWAY, SO MY BIG CONGRATUALTION TO PRESONUS FOR THERE LATEST BUGY SOFTWARE, THANK YOU
😅
Please which of the polarity can I record 1 person with ?
To my knowledge, polarity is usually not a factor unless you’re recording with 2 microphones that aren’t in phase. You can leave polarity in the default state. Flip the polarity to see if your mix gets beefier or sounds thinner.. The cardiod pattern for one person is most often going to be cardiod.. I’m just throwing out general tips so hopefully I’ve answered your question 😅
Thank you!
You're welcome! 😁
Nice video man! Want to see a tour of your guitars/show and tell one of these days!
Amen
I tried, from an interview with minimal background sound, worked horribly robotic - unusable
Thanks for this, Chris! In the section at approx. 22. 59 of your video, you are duplicating a drum hit, but it is unclear how you replaced the "bad" hit with the duplicate. I have the same situation with a vocal where I went flat. The first one was perfect, and I'd like to copy that into the section where I went flat. How did you replace the unwanted section with the copied section? Sorry if you said and I missed it.
No problem! The “bad” drum hit is still there but it is underneath what was duplicated.. Studio One will only play the top most layer of audio.. you could use your split or slice tool to cut out the vocal you want to copy.. then select the good vocal and do a Copy and Paste function wherever you want it to be. There are many ways of dealing with a bad take.. look up the Auto Punch function on Studio One.. I believe I have a few videos giving tutorial of this. Auto Punch allows you to record very small sections of audio. So if you were flat on a certain word, auto punch will allow you to re-record that one specific word while leaving your original recording intact Hope that helps!
@@heychrisgreen Thanks so much! Your tutelage is greatly appreciated! I will watch the videos you recommended as well! Cheers!
Hope you enjoyed the video! Here's a link to my Amazon Storefront: amzn.to/4eyIpZp
The main thing I hear is the overtones interacting differently for each tuning. This is exemplified in the way the vibrato shape is different when you let the chord ring out. There seems to be more vibrato with the equal temperament, less with the James Taylor tuning, and very minimal vibrato using the Pederson sweetened tuning. Right?
I would agree! 😁 Equal temperament was always meant to be a compromised tuning in order for folks to play in multiple keys.. hence the wobbling 🤔
Lovely stuff...Can i post my mix and tag you and your wife?
Sure thing! 😁
@heychrisgreen thank you. And kindly leave more of your stems. I enjoy practicing more with it
