MINI SPLIT FAIL - what a bad install looks like
This mini split fail caused MASSIVE WATER DAMAGE and had to be decommissioned after only a few weeks of service. The homeowners were left with a $7k bill....
Mini splits are simple in theory but there's a lot that goes into selecting the right style and size. Equally important, there's a lot that needs to be done to make sure they're working properly. They're more 'single zone hvac system' then they are window unit. It's easy to make them blow cold air. It takes more skill to make them run properly.
These mini splits failed for numerous reasons. This is a bad install. The nail in the coffin was leaking refrigerant, which led to low refrigerant levels, which led to iced up coils, which led to condensate leaking through the house. The most obvious deficiency was the wrong style system being installed. This was an all around mini split fail. What else do you see wrong in this bad mini split install?

I really regret pulling down the lath and plaster in my old house......it was built in 1823 after the family lost their wooden house in a fire 😢 the walls to the outside were over 18 inches thick and it was one of 3 stone houses in cape may. From the era. I could tell stories about the place for days but it was a family involved in shipping and they built the place from ballast stones and they were the first family to have central lighting 😮 they had a carbide generator pit that lit the house into the 60s😮because the electric company didn't want to run the wire. My dad preserved the place from the second owner and we even lit the Christmas lights from our acetylene welding bottle for the holidays.......those lines were still good 100 plus years later 😢 god i miss that place and I was screwed out of it by a lying step mother a greedy sister who got hers and it happened when I was overseas fighting 😢

one of the big disadvantage was knob and tube was never designed to be within insulated walls. It used the open air to dissipate heat and when people started insulating that he didn't dissipate anymore. And then later rather than getting removed people come in and retrofit all sorts of nonsense which can really overloaded. We used to do things better.

When you get to a certain level? You can’t cowboy these things out and still maintain good standing with municipalities and banks. They’re document med as deficient and need remediation reports to close out permits and get financing. The boilers have been out of commission for 8 years and would cost $4 grand to get back running, and we’re moving walls so the current radiators will be obsolete.

The thing that scares me most about knob and tube is learning about how later on when people add onto the electrical they often tap random neutrals creating a very high likelihood of a neutral overloaded when a hot may not be.

Meh - flip side to that is people leave these tanks buried or dump oil down the drain. It’s annoying but waste oil can be pretty burdensome. This happens in restaurants - companies charge to take waste fryer oil, filter it, and sell it as biodiesel

    • @GreenBuildingNetwork

We are not certified to remove, it does fall under our building permit. It was a permitted install so for it to be removed from insurance policies and records, it needs to be documented. If we didn’t have a building permit, we might be able to get away without a permit. On the flip side, if there’s a spill, we’d be liable!

@GreenBuildingNetwork so use the Milwaukee m18 transfer pump.... Pump it into drums outside and then use it somewhere that needs oil for heat. Or in diesel engine... Those companies gonna do same thing! 2 bucks a gal to resell it it at market price??? Smh Pump it, get a scrapper come a remove it free... Remove fill pipe and vent pipes, or at very least, cap from outside and then remove pipe inside as close to wall as possible and cap in inside as well.
