      Hi Carrie! No you can use any yarn you have for this type of project. I personally prefer cotton for a couple reasons. One it does stretch as much and it's really durable. But not having cotton shouldn't stop you. Acrylic will also work great. Enjoy!

    Thank you for the thorough instructions! Have you ever tried to crochet this flat? I'm trying the sc/hdc repeat section on a flat project and it keeps slanting to one side. I'm thinking it has something to do with all the hdc going in one direction without the row from the wrong side compensating for the slating. Is this something you have come across?

    • @crochetcricket
      @crochetcricket 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Gaby, I have experienced some slanting on flat pieces when alternating stitch types. It might be something you can block to fix or you can just do it all in sc also. I have a sleave that is just 2 flat sc panels seamed with a flat surface stitch.th-cam.com/video/esW9AX2alYY/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared

    Although my first attempt went poorly, mostly making the base too long and too wide not realising how much it would expand and a minor error on the increases, I am excited to make another one with some practice, for now I made a lengthwise cover it was so wide , but this is still the first time I have successfully made that increase to make rectangle shape and the tutorial was a good pace and very clear once I got the hang of it and for now I have a slightly wonky book cover for myself haha

    I've made my first crochet project with this! Thank you so much. I did have to look for another way to do an invisible join because I couldn't seem to understand your way without increasing (but I understand that's a beginners issue! ) - after I had figured out a way for me to join that worked for me, it was simple to follow and to crochet. I chose a pretty leaf button - it was also my first time going button shopping and that was also quite fun! Now I have a way to protect my book in my bag... Thank you for sharing your craft! :)

    Hi loving the video although I’d like to make it bigger and am concerned it won’t work

    • @crochetcricket
      @crochetcricket 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Ivy, you can make the bag as big or small as you want but it's the shape you have to keep in mind. If you want it wider horizontally or vertically you may want to stop working in the round for the granny square part when it's big enough but then start working rows by using a granny stripe on the sides you want to increase. That should give you the shape you want then you should still be able to follow the rest of the pattern. I have not tested this, but that is what I would try if I wanted a bigger bag. Hope this helps!

  • @MrsDanonino

    Hey! If I wanted to make a kindle sleeve instead of a book sleeve, should I be making any adjustments for width?

    • @crochetcricket
      @crochetcricket 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For a kindle or tablet you probably don't need to do the increasing on round 2 in the corners. Just do round one and then do one stitch in every stitch around starting from round 2. That would give you a more narrow sleeve. You could do HDC stitches like in the video or SC stitches. Both would work. Hope this helps 😊.

    Does the type of yarn we use matter?

    • @crochetcricket
      @crochetcricket 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi apricotteya, you can use any kind of yarn you want for a book sleeve. I prefer to use cotton yarn but I have seen others use acrylic so whatever you have will work fine :). I had a very thin cotton for this one so I just held 2 strands together so it was more like worsted weight but if you have worsted weight that will work just fine. Just adjust your starting chain based on the size of your book. You could do a small 2x2 inch square to test your yarn and hook before making the project. If you use a smaller hook than what is recommended it comes out a little more stiff and I sometimes like that for this kind of project. Hope this helps!

    • @crochetcricket
      @crochetcricket 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Veni, a slip stitch is when you insert your hook, pull up a loop and then immediately pull that loop through the loop already on your hook. I like to use slip stitches around the top edge of the sleeve. I think it looks nice and finished but also makes the edge stronger 💪. Slip stitches around the top edge are optional and you can finish your sleeve with whatever border you like best. Thanks!

      @@Naturellebooks That's awesome! I am still working on the first book lol. It would help if I only read one at at time haha. I do have another book tote pattern I am working on right now. It has handles that you will be able to attach to this sleeve. I should have it uploaded in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

    I am so confused. You've got 2 3 2 increases on one end but only 2 3 on the other? 🤔

    • @crochetcricket
      @crochetcricket 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Loren! It's because the first stitch of the new round has an increase so when you get back around you just need to finish increasing in the last 2 stitches. Hope this helps! Check out my newest book sleeve tutorial that has a flat bottom base th-cam.com/video/WVnA_RavOj8/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared Thanks!

    i cannot figure out how to add two and three stitches in the round part? i can't identify the difference between just the end of the row and the "round".

      also how do you 3 sc in the last ch? i can't follow how you do 3 stitches in one

    • @crochetcricket
      @crochetcricket 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Gutt, with this pattern you are working on both sides of the starting chain. On round 1 you work to the end but instead of turning you keep going. In order to get around to the other side of the chain you need to work 3 stitches in the very last chain so instead of doing 1 stitch you put 3 into the same space. Then you're on the other side of the chain. Now work around putting another stitch in each chain on the other side. So you're essentially working in a circle. When you get back to the start, you need to put 2 stitches into the same space as your starting stitch. At that point, I chose to keep working without joining but that is optional. You can join and chain 1 before continuing if that is easier for you. If you want a flat bottom bade instead of working in the round try my newest tutorial 😊 Hope this helps!

      Hi Nayelive! Thank you 😊 my newest book sleeve tutorial is actually very similar but a much simpler pattern to the small tote bag you see here. On this one I used a lightweight yarn and seamed up all the sides. On the Custom Book sleeve for any book tutorial, you would just need to make that and then add handles. I will make a video in the coming weeks on how to transform that custom book sleeve into a book tote so watch for that. Thanks again ☺️ ❤️ 📚

    beautiful tutorial! i do have one question, when going from single stitch to hd stitch, you chain 1 before joining. do you also chain 1 before joining when going from hd to single?

    • @crochetcricket
      @crochetcricket 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Sarah! chain 1 is always at the start of the new round. So at the end of each round finish by Joining into the 1st St from the previous round, ch 1, then either SC (for the base) or HDC ( for the sleeve) into the same stitch you joined into. Hope this helps! Thank you ❤️❤️❤️

    Hi there, thanks for this tutorial. It’s a really beautiful project. I had a clarification question, are you supposed to chain one at the beginning of each row after each join? Thank you❤

    • @crochetcricket
      @crochetcricket 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hiya! Thank you 😊 Yes you will always join, ch 1 and work into the same stitch you joined into. Doing a tight join will help it be less noticeable. Mark your first stitch so it's easier to see 🤓 Because of the textured stripes with the HDC blo I decided not to do continuous rounds. Hope this helps ☺️
