Make Up Chronicles: Obama, Trump, at the Carter Funeral: A Reflection on Respect & Power
Make Up Chronicles: Obama, Trump, at the Carter Funeral: A Reflection on Respect and Power
In this video, I share my thoughts about President Barack Obama sitting next to President-elect Donald Trump at the funeral of Jimmy Carter-a moment that sparked a lot of discussion in my TH-cam community. The comments and reactions to my original post have been eye-opening and, frankly, a bit concerning.
I discuss what this moment symbolizes, especially for Black people, and dive into the deeper issue of how Black women are often expected to accept disrespect-in public, at work, and in our personal lives. This moment at the funeral serves as a reminder of the need to demand respect unapologetically, not just from others but also for ourselves.
Join me as I reflect on the importance of setting higher standards for how we are treated and respected, especially in the public sphere. Let’s talk about why this matters so much and what we can do to shift the narrative in the months and years to come.
What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I’m so over the kee keeing and haw hawing to make nice just to go along to get along. I learned the art of looking right through and beyond whyte people as if they’re not even there. 45 placed Obama’s entire family in jeopardy and there was no necessary reason for the kee keeing. I think it made him look weak cooning to a clown. I agree that you can be cordial without reducing yourself to the coon behavior. I even had an issue with him sitting and having beers with the cop that arrested Henry Lewis Gates, Jr. when he broke his window to get into his own home. I felt that was rewarding bad behavior on the part of the cop.

I just made a Facebook post on that Very subject. My husband and an associate were sitting in a mechanic shop owned by a saltine. Every unfunny joke that saltine made they were laughing and chucking it up. Saltine was not even laughing himself. He could express an opinion and they were agreeing with him before he could get it out of his mouth! I on the other hand sat there and got more respect than the both of them. However I don’t give that a lot of credence because that could just be his way of keeping enmity between the sexes or some other nefarious reason. But I want every video you publish!!

Thats not being an adult that accepting disrespect

11 minutes in… yup, this is truth. I was in a program where my teacher (colonel) was a bw. She was feared and you wouldn’t expect her to actually like you bc you had a fear (like how you would fear disrespecting your own mother). She was actually fairly nice but struck a carefully crafted balance that still kept you on your toes 😂 people complained about her for little reasons like her sternness, but let me tell you, when she left, people wanted to cry. They actually realized how much they loved her. The only other 2 bw teachers I had were during middle school. One was from Texas, straight hair, “valley girl” accent, and pretty sweet (wish I could’ve reached out to her after I left and let her know I saw what she was going through and appreciated her). The Asian students treated her with the most disrespect! It was wild. Some even left me out of group projects and work! The other one was from the Caribbean. A family and consumer Sci teacher. Had a slight “accent”. She was treated like SH!t and was also nice and unproblematic. It’s crazy. By the way, all the BM teachers I had… were all respected and cherished, like by DEFAULT. No matter is nice or stern the bw teacher was… she was always seen I a more negative light compared to the BM teachers…

Your correct Ann Marie about Obama. Obama is from the Chicago area, and he is just acting out how the wht community conditions the blk people in this area. I live in this area and see what Obama did all the time. If people are saying it was cool, they are just telling you what they are doing. But on the flip side, those same blk folks won't give another blk people the same grace Obama gave Trump.

It’s because of a power dynamic (yk YT ppl hold the power in this country, and it’s better to smile and nod) and possibly a bit of pitty. Trump, like most people, has a deep internal urge to be loved and admired. Well, his dad and mom were both immigrants, German and Scottish and although he has euro ancestry he wasn’t as respected as the multigenerational blue bloods of NY. So I guess Obama’s just trying to look past that for that occasion and try to empathize. Or maybe my take is “dumb”, idk.

I 100% agree with you. But I see the other side. A overwhelming majority of jobs in corporate America particularly the high paying ultra-competitive jobs many have to do this to survive. I can’t do it- which is why I am constantly quitting and moving jobs. But not everyone has the courage to up and quit and move like you and I would. After all these years I have learned that to be able to live my truth fully is not compatible with most of these work spaces which is why I am trying to FIRE in the next 5 years before I turn 50.

I agree! I informed my friend that I would no longer be going to a Denny's because the staff there were obviously prejudiced and even brought me a dirty syrup container. He tried to make excuses for their behavior and attempted to persuade me to play nice. I made it very clear to him that I would no longer put up with such behavior because there are too many restaurants in the area for me to spend money at disrespectful establishments. It was in that moment that I realized that we are always making nice through the disrespect.
