Ngl I remember when watching this a few years back & thinking this was a stupid message cause obviously there is a difference between youtube videos & filmmaking. But now getting back into content creation & hearing this, I think my problem was youtube video does not equal film VS TH-camr does not equal filmmaker. Cause sure, I wouldn’t say a commentary youtube video about Mrbeast biggest allegations with fortnite gameplay in the background is a film. But I would say the work to make that video, whether hard work or not, does make them a filmmaker. Cause someone saw or got an idea, wrote it & produce it to be shown on youtube. Even today, we got channels like Life of Riza which are vlogs but shot so beautifully it feels like short films. Just wanted to comment on here to say that I’m glad my mind changed & I agree a lot more with this video than how I used too in the past. Plus imo, indie films are far more interesting & fun at times compared to blockbusters!
This is gonna sound crazy but one film that made me love the style of B&W was The Human Centipede 2. I remember watching it with a friend & we both agreed that if it was in color, it wouldn’t feel or be the same. Because that was the first film where the black & whiteness of the film gave this gritty & dirty vibe & was the first horror film to genuinely creep me out. I do hope the B&W style still continues on in any genre in the future!
Beautiful
I think what is holding you back more than anything is marketing. You make great films that are just strong in all of the right ways, but you are genuinely very bad at marketing them. Like, you know what you're doing but it hurts me to know end to see you get left in the dust because you're genuinely bad at marketing at hype. And like, I get that sort of stuff costs a lot of money but like, you genuinely need to put money into the marketing of your stuff. Do NOT view it as content. You're making movies, brother.
I needed this today. Thank you for popping up on my feed again and again. Inspiring and educational. Edit : what would you recommend for procrastinating? I find I take breaks from work and go on reels or stupid social media , what do you do ? Would love to see a video about that .
Nice, keep doing your art!
I would just like to see more contemporary titles being remastered rather than 99% independent cinema and 4KBDs of things we already got. Like that's fine if they want to do that, but it shouldn't be 99% of their release schedule. That said, I think they're a great company to work with. I remember when I bought the World of WKW box set, all my disc were defective and they stood behind their product 100% and replaced them for me.
Its really a shame how your videos dont get recommended by youtube. I only found your channel through joel haver the other day and ive enjoyed what ive seen so far. TH-cam likes to promote a lot of awful stuff and actual originality doesnt have a place on their home page.
Im a bit late here but just wanted to say i loved the film! Its impressive how its filmed in one shot more or less, but the acting was great and the dialogue felt natural. Like any horror movie, the characters were making questionable decisions but ill let it slide since its a staple of the genre😂. I thought the three-screens thing was interesting but i quickly found myself focusing only on the bottom so im not sure that worked. Overall, something to be proud of, great work!
oh man idk... A few minutes in and i am already feeling a little sick to my stomach trying to follow 3 screens at one lol
I think Gareth Edwards method is the best one for starting.
What film was the clip from 0:21 “I don’t believe in sin”? Looked like Brad Dourif & Bob DeNiro but I couldn’t be positive
Most accurate review. I saw the entire movie and couldn't get myself to care about anything about it.
i've avoided it for long enough... i thought i could do without... until recently i realized that if i want to have ultra-wide, edward yang - style cinematography with characters talking, it's either use lav mics or put up with the excruciation process of adding dialogue in post... ;-; i know what i must do
Quality over Quantity.
Found this thanks to Joel. Logged and reviewed on LB. Hope you continue to work and improve. Dropping the phone on the sidewalk was the same horror as 'Hereditary'. The glamour shots of all the ramen are so great.
New subscriber!
I agree that you have to pick what is suitable to the output but you may be holding yourself back forever by not investing in the things that will give your films higher fidelity and visual appeal. Why purposefully shoot yourself in the foot? If anything, due to TH-cam's compression you should be trying to make the image nicer in any way possible, to curb that downside. Obviously you know lighting makes half the shot. While I like the improv filmmaking, I'd like to see something very carefully curated out of you.
You should do some easy to do, easy to get views tutorial type stuff. And then Keep your short film stuff going on! It's the same people who would watch tour work and then watch how you made it! Or you Can talk about films you like ans how you think they made it !
I've had same issue, I've posted consistently and still it's flat. In the end it's because we're not making what people want. No mystery. You talk about making films...me too!!! But the reality is that channels that avoid DOING and talk more about gear do better. I think most people are aspirational filmmakers NOT filmmakers. I was told by someone recently that my content made them feel guilty and pressured to do something.
Great! Another upload! Yes. Never stop. Loved the message, I work with a Sony a6300 and I love it, I've been using it for some commercial shoots, ads for youTube and even TikToks and facebook stuff for some clients but what I like is playing with it and some filters to recreate scenes from Hollywood horror movies and and do some shorts with my family and friends, recently I got the Osmo Pocket 3 and the Osmo action 4 so I will be checking out that workflow just to see if I can use it to make some films in a faster and fun way (something between Chlorine and maybe Marble Hornets. Great to have more videos from you, greets from Mexico.
Stumbled upon your film and found myself watching it until the end in one shot. I'm not a conoseur of art, but I liked it, don't know what I like in particular, maybe honesty. Thanks.
Maybe I'm missing something but I don't get why they changed the title to "A LGBTQ+ Crime Feature film" when as far as I can tell there's nothing queer going on?
There is definitely a subtle connection between the two main leads. It was designed to be that they are both gay/bi. Dan stalking Ed, then watching Mishima (famous gay writer) over sake, Dans insistence on Ed moving on from the girl Jessica, even the final scene has a sexual overtone. It’s subtle but there if you watch it with a trained eye.
Wow I'm going to watch this totally different after you said that
So I was introduced to you by an interview you did on Noam Kroll's podcast. It's funny to come across your video since I was going though TH-cam subs I have but barely watch. I remember watching one if your films about the guy in the apartment and noodles. I have to say this video is ironic in a way. You want to be a TH-camr and be more consistent. Which I get. I'm in my goal-phase but unlike you I know exactly what I want. But like I noticed you made video from your bedroom where the bed is not made and your wearing a tank top. Like you just woke up? I'm not saying you need to be like other TH-camrs that are "flashy" and such. But something in the realm of being taken more seriously. And I'm not saying this to be an asshole. If it matters I think you have talent . And you definitely have knowledge. Wish you all the best in future projects.
Working on an video thats gonna take me nearly a 100 hours for my next upload. I totally hear what you are saying. Trying to make more polished content. This video was done in a way to get out some raw emotions in a raw state. I think there is room for both. I appreciate the candid feedback and respect it. What I will ask in response is after not watching my content for a long time it seems this very unpolished video was the one that got you to click why is that? This has been one of my highest engaged videos in terms of comments in months. So I wonder if people like raw and unfiltered or more polished. Thanks a million for checking out the video and I genuinely appreciate the comment.
@The5DollarFilmSchool Hey, glad to hear that you liked my feedback. Some people can be very sensitive which kind of is ironic in filmmaking since critism is apart of it. You asked how I came upon clicking on that video. And honestly, as I think I said in previous comment it was just happenstance. I was going through channel subscriptions to delete,(mostly euro recipes lol) and saw yours and remembered why I subscribed. And then clicked on the channel and then I THINK that was your most recent video you posted and was curious. That "Show Don't Tell" pod is by far my favorite. So many loud and obnoxious filmmaking pods that I roll my eyes and cringe. Kroll just does very simple and genuine interviews and I've literally written down notes from his episodes that give solid advice.
I think you are right! The real story we all need to figure out how to process and how do the ones still living strive! We have to figure out how to learn then push forward and win. Never die easy and Payton reminds me how Walter Payton got tackled and knocked down and he always reached his arm forward to gain one more yard from his fall. I hope you figure out a way in your film to capture that raw pain and turn it into a lesson video booklet and how to heal what we control around us and move forward with new appreciation for everyone in our lives still alive!!! Keep thinking, dreaming and producing Dan! The story is in you and so many need to hear it expressed in words and film. FarmerJohn
Good on you for standing on your morals.
This mirrored a lot of what I've been feeling for the last couple of years. I totally understand what you mean. Your passion for this will be what gets you through, make what you want to make and find your own niche.
Really powerful stuff Dan, do you think would make films with your brother?
probably not haha I made a pact to him that this would be the last feature film we'd involve him in. He's briefly in the long con haha. He has an insanely busy schedule. So this film was very hard to schedule with him and took a few months to film his scenes.
@The5DollarFilmSchool Ahh I see! I've just recently shot my next documentary. It's short compared to my last which was a feature. It follows a local Ferry service that's near me which has been running for nearly 200 years but could be scrapped. Could I send it you when it's done? Would love your opinion .
@@antonarenko3242 send it my way when youve completed it :)
You and Mr. Dik are genuine artist. You both are inspiring.
Hey Dan, I feel like a lot of the channels success is through the connection we feel to you. Maybe you could be consistent by just doing an update or rambling video every week. It would keep the channel rumbling along, and free up time for more creative videos (which we of course also love).
Great suggestion I appreciate the feedback !
Now then 🙂
yuckk
This one hit home. Just have to keep going after it. Thats the truth.
Yeah it’s hard but I have to do it
Get out there and do stuff with real everyday people, just strangers out in the world. They're hilarious. That was the biggest lesson I learned from doing Subway Shark, and I can't wait to get back out there and do more stuff like that
Yeah seriously! Subway shark is top tier. I think I’m gonna try and do more stuff out in the real world. Thanks Cody for the encouragement.
It's a shame that TH-cam and I guess social media as a whole is so hesitant to let original ideas shine. Some of your films are some of the most groundbreaking art that has or ever will exist. I love your rebel nature, it's so inspiring as a filmmaker. But I'm excited to see you experiment with some new ideas. Never get disheartened with making stuff no matter what, I'll always be here to watch anything you create
Thanks for sticking around and being such an encouraging force it means a lot to me.
I’m gonna fall on you for a long time Dan and it’s great to see you in good spirits! I’m a filmmaker down in South Louisiana, and I was just in Austin last weekend, and I happen to bring up folk filmmaking in a debate on music and copywriting. Cheers
Thanks for being a longtime follower it means the world to me!
Damn the poster is Cool AF 😎. How did you create poster ?
Created by legendary artist Josh Horvath!
You have 8 feature films with over 5k views. In total your feature films views equate to 1700 sold out cinemas. Which is double the amount of cinemas in Australia nationwide. If that’s not success I don’t know what is. And in addition to that, you have what? 8 features you’re getting ready to release? Who knows how well those films will perform! Keep your chin up, hard to see the forest through the trees.
Thanks that’s a wonderful way to rephrase it. I appreciate it
100% this. Keep going. YOU are your own niche, you would make “trending” videos if it truly was what you love, which I don’t think you do. Which is completely fine. Keep making stuff, your voice is needed.
Doing your thing and being rewarded for it is just luck. Low effort, high effort - doesn't matter. Every 15 000 people in the credits $200 million blockbuster is high effort. They still fail. Doesn't matter. People also watch movies they know they'll hate. Do you want to leech off franchises and beloved IPs? You've studied Joel Haver. His channel still has videos with less views than some of yours. Do you follow his second channel? "Art is not a competition, [even with self]," he says. imo - it's the only healthy approach. To art part that is. Don't ask me about monetisation. Have you seen a Man Carrying a Thing channel? Short memes, serious booktube videos, freeform essays, low-effort second channel. Like MCT or Joel you can own your formats or cycle appoaches. Joel would burn-out doing only animation. Joel woudn't be Joel without it either. Have you seen Mr. Beast's interview at Lex Fridman's podcast? It's a great interview and it's funny because Mr. Beast, when asked for advice asked Lex what mattered to him instead. STEM and culture podcaster and creator of the most expensive shitposts in the world can have different values approaches and audiences and just respect each other's work etc. Are you in for the good times and expressing yourslef or to compete with Mr. Beast? Why do you love movies? Personally, when I failed to grow online i got depressed for a loooong time and made healthier offline life a priority - social, mental, physical etc. No regrets about this decision still. Will i post art online and care about career again when I'll know it's on my terms and i'm just not exhausting and hurting myself more by doing it? Sure I will. But i'd rather look into AuDHD some more first. And cultivate what makes me and my friends happy irregardless of algorythms. Advice? I'm glad this video doesn't have cheesy background music. Thank you. It was perfect. I'm glad you didn't cut out your voice cracking. I know this pain. You made me feel less alone at it. Thank you.
I appreciate this comment it’s given me a lot to think about
@@The5DollarFilmSchool I'm glad. sometimes i feel self-conscious when leaving long comments
@@The5DollarFilmSchool I'm still thinking about this short exchange. I'll appreciate follow-up in any form. Personally, I'm still stuck as an artist, but somewhat better as a member communities I care about and to me it still feels more sustainable. You too gave me a lot to think about, and you talking about your hardships in this video helped me to process things I deal with too.
This kind if honest video is essential. You rarely see honest TH-camrs. So this video is a good example of where you could go. Also, maybe, put some more effort in your films, i really like the stuff you used to make. But lately your films seem low effort (or at least thats my opinion so take it with a grain of salt) You could make a movie every 3 months or even once a year. But at the end is your choice . I wish you the best of lucks.
Thanks for being so honest with the feedback I appreciate it
It’s so nice hearing you put yourself and your happiness first. My entire philosophy with whatever I create is to almost never make things with the audience in mind. Make things YOU love and the audience will come. Trying to please everyone ends up pleasing nobody. You’re amazing at what you do and all that should matter is if YOU love what you’re making.
Thanks calob you are the best ❤
Totally true
❤Filmmaking is what we do. So we gonna keep doing it no matter what!
Right on Jordan! Thanks brother!
I have a feature that I'd like to make & I'm gonna try to make some of it as short films before I try taking things further. This what I've always wanted but i let the tides push & pull me: My life isnt where i thought i'd be when i picked up the camera again but I don't care - I need this, filmmaking is what gets me motivated and what inspires me
Thanks for commenting I totally relate to the push and pull part of it
I think you just need to be clear about your goals. And share those goals with your audience so we can help you or at least cheer you on. I don’t think you try to ape any other TH-camrs but look at how standard story guy takes one topic of his work and what he is trying to do and takes your throughly it. We don’t need another TH-cam reviewer.
Thanks for the advice I totally appreciate the feedback
Bro, filmmaking is impossible. Making anything is a miracle. Success is relative. Would you make movies if you tube didn't exist? I think you probably would. As a fellow low budget filmmaker, I'd like to see more about how you make the movies, come up with ideas, maybe not tutorials per se, but the actual sausage being made kinda thing.
Thanks for the advice! Will definitely take it and try to deep dive more into the making process
Be honest what do you think my channel could work on? You've been a fan. You've watched my content. Is there something you'd want to see more or less of? I greatly appreciate anyone who engages and will take the time to respond to all feedback positive or negative.
Turned off my comment restriction setting to say this. If you can afford it, I hope you keep making the videos you enjoy. TH-cam viewers are also struggling to figure out how to be themselves in spite of the algorithm - and since they have less time to plan their choices, they regularly fail. But for a maker, you get to spend a good chunk of your happy times off this app. Hope you dial in to the miracle of that, and let the numbers worry about themselves. One alternative measure of success would be to get production gigs in the real world - that's worth counting for sure. But if you can genuinely enjoy making without worrying about the numbers, you will outlive this app. You will be thriving when you have to explain to your newest fan, what TH-cam was about. That's something to look forward to.
I don't subscribe much, because I like to curate my digital experience for myself. But I will, just to see where this journey goes.
Looking forward to what’s coming Dan, you’re such an incredible inspiration to anyone who watches
Thanks so much for the kind words! I genuinely appreciate hearing it :)
