  • We tow our RV rig over the Monarch Pass in Colorado between Poncha Springs and Gunnison.
    We have an F-150 2.7 liter ecoboost engine with a weight distribution hitch to pull our camper.
    The towing capacity of our truck is 7600 lbs according to Ford's specifications.
    Our camper is a Keystone Cougar 22rbs which is a 27 foot travel trailer.
    The GVWR on the Cougar 22rbs is 7200 lbs if it's completely loaded to the maximum (ours is not).

    Thanks for the awesome video, I have the exact same setup, 2.7 with a 5510 lb 26 ft travel trailer. I've been wondering how it would do with hills and mountains, so this video was helpful!

    The truck will handle that travel trailer just fine. The only problem I see is that you're squatting in the back pretty drastically. I would recommend air bags (expensive route) or what I did was add a leaf spring and installed Timbrens SES. They are hollow rubber springs that take place of your bump stop. They hover over your rear axle until you add weight then they engage. They cost about 260 bucks and are super easy to put on. Get yourself some better shocks as well. Maybe a good monotube shock such as Bilstein 5000's or Rancho 9000's. Also a good weight distribution system is key. I prefer the Equalizer WDH with integrated 4 point sway control but it's a bit on the pricey side but well worth it if you're a safety nut like me.

      Thanks for the reply. We actually use the exact same hitch that you mention. We've been doing some weight redistribution to try to reduce the tongue weight, so our current stance while towing is a bit closer to level. However, it's not fully level yet and I'll do some reading up on the upgrades that you mention. The leaf spring sounds like a pretty good idea since it would really only engage when we have the additional weight of the trailer hitched on. We also had the hitch set up and installed while the trailer was empty and new. The trailer has a good bit more heft now that we are full-time travelers and have all of our stuff loaded up. We may need to redo the setup of the hitch. All of that being said, the handling has been great and we haven't had any issues with the trailer starting to feel out of control at any point. Thanks again for the in depth comment!

      Rat-race Runaways no problem at all. I have been doing this for a while and you learn as you go along. Word of advice about shifting tongue weight. Take your truck with you, wife, dog, full tank of gas and all gear that you keep in truck. Take it to the CAT scale without trailer. Get a weight. Then go back (doesn't have to be same day) and get a re-weigh with travel trailer. Do the math and see what your TRUE travel trailer weighs and get an idea of how much weight is on that tongue. Once you have that true number then load your tongue weight 10 to 15% of the total weight of your TT. Be sure to stay within those limits and dont shift too much stuff to the rear as it may cause sway. Don't forget that tongue weight goes toward payload of the vehicle as well and a lot of people do not factor in all that weight that sit on the tongue such as the battery, full propane tanks, gear and dont forget that hitch head weighs about 70 lbs. If you still have sag in the back then it's time for those upgrades I mentioned in my previous post. That rear squatting cam put too much weight on your TT front axle if you have tandem axles. That can cause excess tire wear and also some sway. I bought this little gadget that measures tongue weight. Well worth the 150 bucks. Hope you get one as it helped me tremendously! Good luck and safe travels.

    You guys are right up against the max tow rating of your truck, but that's fine. The 2.7 and the 10-speed were designed for this kind of service, so I wouldn't worry about a thing. That said, towing a heavy load like that does require more frequent oil changes than Ford recommends, every 5000 miles with quality full synthetic oil.
    Also, I'm curious what ratio your gears are? Most people get 3.73 with the 2.7, but I think 3.55 are fine and you get slightly better fuel economy.

    I have to agree with your wife. You need more truck. The truck can pull it fine it also needs to carry the weight. The half ton has a soft suspension and you are putting a lot of strain on your transmission and suspension and axles.

    Excellent .. the road at end of my driveway is 12% grade, one of steepest in Wisconsin .. so I can either go uphill one mile or down one mile to get to other main highways. It does get slippery in winter .. so much so that the post office asked me to place my rural mailbox nearer to town .. about a mile away from my farm on level road .. they didn't want to stop on this hill and deliver mail during bad weather. I can understand that .. a little inconvenient for me, but, that's ok, I guess .. I just pick up my mail whenever I happen to drive by the box.

    Look up 5 star performance and order a tow tune for your engine if you ever feel its under-powered. It will put out the same numbers (HP and TQ) as a 3.5L with 87 octane. If you are willing to jump up to 93 octane, your 2.7L will exceed the power and torque of the 3.5L ecoboost. They also have a economy tune as well that will allow you to get even better mpg than stock when you are not towing and just cruising around. I intend to get the tunes so you have the best of both worlds on the 2.7L (mpg and power of the 3.5L).

      According to the ford specs, our little ecoboost is very similar in towing capacity to the 5 liter v8. It can be a bit more or less depending on the rear end differential gearing. The ecoboosts are twin turbos, so they seem to develop most of the power when the rpms are up higher. I drove both the 5 liter v8 and the 2.7 ecoboost back to back when I was test driving the F-150s before purchasing. I thought the ecoboost felt significantly more powerful, but I wasn't towing when test driving. It's doing good for us so far and the better fuel economy has been great!

    • @JohnDiMartino
      @JohnDiMartino 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rat-race Runaways your observation on the twin turbos have all top end power is completely opposite of the truth. The turbos on both the 2.7 and 3.5 twin turbo are sized for torque and pulling, they are not sized for top end or maximum power. The 2.7 and 3.5 both feel significantly more powerful than the 5 liter because they are especially in the average working range of the engines. The 5 liter is peaky and needs high rpm to tow or haul ,where as the ecoboost engines do not they can pull most grades at 2500-3500 rpm where as the 5 liter needs 5000 plus rpm to do the same work..... although the 5 liter sounds absolutely amazing and the ecoboost engines do not sound good but they pull like a diesel .

    • @RatraceRunaways
      @RatraceRunaways  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. I just looked at the torque curve on the engine and you're right. I can easily see why I preferred the little ecoboost over the big v8. The torque curve ramps up much sooner in the rpms than most turbocharged engines, peaking around 3k RPM, which is perfect. It looks like ford tuned it perfectly for towing. It has a large sweet spot on the curve for torque generation.
      I'm glad we picked the 2.7 ecoboost engine over the 5L v8 so far.I've read that there were some reliability issues with the first ecoboosts. I hope all the kinks of the ecoboost setup are worked out now. This ecoboost design is pretty amazing for how well it tows with such a small engine.
      The engine did great pulling monarch pass. It had to tach pretty high a few times, but that is to be expected when you're towing over a mountain pass. I was especially impressed with the temperature of the transmission. I wasn't too worried about the engine, I was more concerned with the transmission overheating or the brakes getting hot when we were coming back down the other side of the mountain. The engine breaking really worked like a champ going down and the transmission didn't have to do a whole lot of running through the gears while going up the mountain.

I bought a 35 foot Sunset Trailer Grand Reserve with Dry weight of 7500. With all the stuff I carry, 8245 lbs. Towed it up a 6% grade, fifth gear on my 10 speed transmission, 55 mph. Pulled Cajon Pass, 65 MPH with no strain. Have a weight distribution hitch, Firestone Airbags on the back. Have not had any issues with sway or lugging the vehicle. I haven't seen any chart that says the 2.7 can tow 11,500lbs. You may be confused with the 3.5 Ecoboost. The 2.7 is rated at 7700lbs with the 3.55 gears and 8200lbs with the 3.73 gears and the payload package. I think you are pushing the limits towing a 35-foot 8000lbs trailer.

    • @Steven-gv1ke
      @Steven-gv1ke 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LuisMartinez-hl9wv I have been researching this for MONTHS, and I can't find any difference between the 3.5L and the 2.7L other than the engine. If the wheelbase, brakes, transmission, transmission cooler, is all there... then this lower rating is simply just because of the motor. What doesn't make any sense though is the 2.7L will outperform a 5.0L V8 in a timed towing test of 7500 lbs up a 6% grade. So clearly the power of the 2.7L is not the issue either because the 5.0L is rated higher on towing than the 2.7L. So if all the trucks are equipped with the exact same equipment besides the motor, this leads me to believe that Ford simply does not want the engines stepping on the toes of the other engines. If Ford listed the 2.7L on paper out towing the 5.0L, and the 2.7L is cheaper than the 5.0L, why would ANYONE buy the 5.0L for more money? Furthermore many people know what 5 star tuning is. They can put a simple tune (not changing anything mechanical) on the 2.7L for a 87 octane tow tune, and it makes 395.7 ft lbs of torque at the REAR WHEELS! If you know anything about vehicles, most people assume a 20% to 18% parasitic drain of power from the engine to the wheels through a automatic transmission. So if you use those percentages, 395.7 ft lbs is more like 470 ft lbs at the engine. That is the EXACT same torque number as the 3.5L ecoboost. See if Ford didn't keep those tow numbers low, people could simply purchase the 2.7L for about $2,000 cheaper, install a $500 tune, and pull the same numbers as a 3.5L ecoboost, but then when not towing, change the tune back to stock, and enjoy better gas mileage than a 3.5L ecoboost. The 2.7L would outperform it in every way for cheaper. This is my theory anyways, as I see no mechanical difference between the trucks except power which can be supplemented with a easy tune.

      @@Steven-gv1ke That's good information and honestly, I'll have to take your word for it because I don't know much about engine and towing mechanics. What I do know is that I blew away a Ram with a Hemi the other day off the line with my 2.7 in sports mode. I also towed a 5000lb travel trailer from Los Angeles to Sedona, Grand Canyon, and Las Vegas over the holidays. On the stretch from Kingman to Las Vegas, I hit 85 MPH with ease up the mountainous area around Hoover Dam. My wife had to tell me to slow down because I didn't notice how fast I was going. That was dangerous; I know. The truck is simply a monster when it comes to towing my particular RV. I'm glad I bought it. The only thing I wish it had was a bigger gas tank. The 3.5 with the max towing package has the 2.7 beat in that department. When towing, I was averaging around 11 MPG.

It’s funny hearing the 2.7 as a little engine and maybe it is, but I have the 5.4 V8 Triton in my truck and in my research I see the 2.7 (325 HP) has 25 more horsepower than my 5.4(300 HP). Crazy!

      @@douggracy2909 I had a 2016 F150 with the 2.7 for 5 years. Used to pull a 25’ travel trailer. Was 5500 lbs empty. So maybe 6500 lbs loaded and I will say the 2.7 did absolutely fine. Never did I say I needed more power. Mine only had the 375 torque and the new ones have 400 torque and 10 speed transmission. I bet it’s even better than what I had. Would recommend for sure

      @@maxracingteam23 Thanks good to know. I want to be able to tow 25-26ft max. Also want to use the truck for main vehicle for highway traveling w/o a trailer. So I was kind of liking the gas mileage the 2.7 offered with the big 36 gallon fuel tank and tow package. Might be the one! I’m really not interested in going through mountain passes.

    How did the truck do overall? I just bought a 2015 2.7 and I’m planning on traveling with it. Just want to know how it does I bought the sport version so it didn’t come with a tow package unfortunately

      It's been almost a year of travelling and the truck has done great! I do think a trailer any bigger than ours would need a bigger engine, but we've had zero issues towing with it. We're planning to settle again this year but if we were going to continue travelling extensively the only thing we'd change is beef up the back suspension. It squats a little, but hasn't been an issue.
      If your truck doesn't have a tow package you might want to do some aftermarket mods to help it out some. Have fun!

      @@elle-17511 Look up 5 star performance and order a tow tune for your engine if you ever feel its under-powered.

      @@Steven-gv1ke Oh wow. I wasn't aware of that! Will definitely look into it.
      We do put in 91 or 93 octane now whenever we tow. We've had a couple experiences where I think we got low octane gas and the engine would die when we stopped. So we learned it likes the higher octane gas.
      Thank you for these tips! We plan to keep the truck for a long, long time so we may want to look into these tunings. :)

      99 expedition thanks for the quick reply. They're certainly is many offerings that fit the bill. I've owned a couple of diesel 2500 and 3500 trucks over the years. They're very nice for towing, especially in high elevations. With diesels or gasser's one just can't beat turbos up where the air gets thin. I'm retired and pull only a 7000 lbs GVW camper. Plus, It's just me and my wife and dog in the cabin, so a 1/2 ton truck fits the bill for me. My truck only has a total cargo capacity of 1425 lbs, so I have to watch what I carry in the truck-as my tongue weight and weight distribution hitch consume about 825 lbs. of that capacity. I almost bought a F250, but based on past experience found it was too much truck for a daily driver. Good luck on your shopping. With so much to choose from, it's s a good problem to have.

  • @rdbjr52
    @rdbjr52 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    We ran up the pass with a Chevy Suburban powered with the GM 5.3 V8, towing a travel trailer with a 7000 lbs GVW. We were very disappointed. We had to stop at the top of the pass to let the engine cool off. The very hot engine smell permeated the cabin. We had to change the hood inner insulation when we got home. It deteriorated from the engine heat. We now own a F150 - after owning a Chevy 3500 Duramax, which is another story. We have nothing against the Duramax, just way too big for our needs. IMHO you can't beat turbo charging if you spend any time towing in the Rockies.

    • @RatraceRunaways
      @RatraceRunaways  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad the Suburban didn't totally die on you. It would be a huge pain to break down half way up the pass you are towing. These newer twin turbo engines seem to overachieve for their sizes. I just hope they will be durable in the long run.

    Did you have a problem with the RV battery not charging while connected to the truck?

    • @RatraceRunaways
      @RatraceRunaways  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ours should charge the RV battery fine as long as the main disconnect is not flipped off inside the RV. We would only flip that off when we would put the RV in storage, which doesn't happen now that we're on the road full time. Every time we make camp after towing, the RV house battery is full. However, this is not a battery that we tend to run down frequently. If we are boondocking, I will hook up our generator each day to top off the house battery. Taking the house battery down below 50% capacity would damage it, due to it being flooded lead acid.

    • @19redskins71
      @19redskins71 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, think of getting an F150 to tow a travel trailer. Read someplace that the 12v power for the battery was not hocked up in the F150 trailer harness.

    • @RatraceRunaways
      @RatraceRunaways  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was told at the Ford dealership that it would charge the RV when I purchased the truck. However, you have made me curious, so I grabbed my multimeter and checked the DC voltage across the hot and ground pins of the 7 pin towing connector. The multimeter was reading no voltage, which means either we are not charging through the 7 pin connector or it is only active when the full harness is hooked up and tow mode is active. I'll see if I can figure out an easy way to check when I have the trailer hitched and connected the next time we tow.
