Ermey knew what he was doing all along. He made a _demo tape_ for Kubrick so he could understand what was expected of the character. After he watched it he grinned and told Ermey "you sly old bastard, you knew all the time I would move you from consultant to the DI role after seeing this"!!
Kubrick had the studio buy out the original actor and immediately cast Ermey.... and movie magic was captured for all time.

These were the songs we sang when I was in. What I love about this is that it is mostly PT stuff, which you do for your entire service. Every day you run PT, if you are combat arms. So think 1 to 2 mile run every morning. Hangover, sleep deprived, love hurt, growing pains, VD, what ever. You run. When you run, you sing cadence to ease the pain. This video is mostly PT, which is 95% of what you will see if you go combat arms.

@@robertschmidt7879 Yeah. Him running with the recruits showed a Human side of Gunny and also shows that he truly cares for them and wants them to truly feel like they are a part of the Marines Family. When the recruits were posted to Vietnam, Gunny also told them that no matter what happens in the future, they shall always be part of the family. But I'm sure that when the recruits first met Gunny and he was mercilessly screaming at them, sometimes for no reason at all, and when he punched Joker in the gut, the recruits must have felt that he is an asshole. It was a pity that Gunny chose to insult and yell at Pyles instead of speaking to him calmly when he had a mental breakdown and was holding his rifle. That cost him his life at the end.
