Ding held Nepo in the match; this is huge. So, he is capable of great chess. In 2018-19 he was in top form, worthy of world champions of the past. I think all this pressure before the match with Nepo was so mounting that he just broke. It happened in history.

I'm surprised no one else has guessed that maybe it has something to do with interference or a poor relationship with the Chinese gov't. That was my first thought after the World Championship and we didn't hear from him for a while.
Good observation, I've actually read somewhere that the Chinese government has been very harsh on Ding, not recognizing him as a real world champion due to all the luck involved and questioning whether the title itself is even worth anything, because they have their own chess-like game called xiangqi. The person who wrote it somewhere on the internet (you can probably find it) also added that they couldn't tell how they know it but they really know it, so I assumed they were from China and that's just what it's like there. Then on another occasion I saw a person with some definitely far-eastern characters as their user name engage in conversations in a chess live stream chat during some tournament, they kept saying Ding was not a realy world champion. I tried to talk with them about it but they started ignoring me when I asked if they were from China.
Chess is simply not that popular in China. Its popularity is growing though - online tutoring apps are teaching it now. The problem is Chinese netizens are notoriously harsh. If you win, you are the hero, if you lose, you’re an embarrassment. Health issues? They will say get over it. Ding’s slump will have many online say he is an embarrassment to China.
