    I've owned snakes for years and tried every mite remedy there is. The best method I know of, and this is widely used, are No Pest Strips. Also called Vapona strips. Get a small plastic container and cut up the yellow strip and put what you need in the container. Small holes cut in the top of course. The amount you use depends on the size of the snake and the enclosure. The fumes from the strip will penetrate everywhere in the cage and everywhere on the snake. Other methods like the one in this video don't kill all the mites. They lay eggs on the snake, especially under the scales around their eyes.
    You must be careful with this method. Place it in the cage for just a few hours at a time. Remove it and see if you've gotten rid of all the mites. If not, use a little more and put it in a bit longer. It's worked for me 100% of the time and has never killed any of my snakes or even made them sick. Patience is the key. Go slow and work your way up. Never feed the snake during this time and change the water twice a day. This is a tried and true method and always works. But it is possible to kill the snake if not done properly. I'm sure one can google this method for more information. Hope it helps!
    Proper usage is dependent on (1) using a bubble gum-size piece (a 0.2 inch x 2-inch [6 mm x 5-cm] piece cut off of the end of the strip) per 10 cubic feet (283 cubic decimeters), (2) avoiding direct contact with the reptile by placing the piece in a small container with holes, (3) using a strip piece two or three times weekly for six to eight weeks for only two to three hours at a time, and (4) allowing for ventilation in the cage.

    • @robertbarker5802
      @robertbarker5802 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Did the same with a younger ball python about ten years ago. Nothing else would work. I was terrified it would kill her or make her sick. There was a massive change in just a single day. And the snake acted so much more at ease in just that one day. I would still hesitate to use this method often though as no way can it be good for them. But after every other option fails this one does work.

      They're honesty kinda easy to see tbh. I just got a snake and I never saw mites before but I knew what they were instantly. They are most often under the scales so the scales of the snake will be pushed up with a black or dark greenish thing under it.

    Hey, Emily! I need your help. I have a baby ball python, about just a little over 17 inches long, she has mites. I just got her and have already quarantined her. So what I would like to ask, is it safe for me to use your method for getting rid of the mites, since she is still so small? If not could you recommend a different method? I really hope you see this and answer bc I don't trust any of the vets around, none of them specialize in reptiles around here. Thank you in advance! :)

    • @SnakeDiscovery
      @SnakeDiscovery  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      For her size, I suggest treating her like in the video but don't rub the ivermectin mixture on her body. Just mist the paper towels, and keep them moist throughout treatment.

    Unfortunately, $40 for Ivermectin is quite cheap, actually. I have a tube of 1% Ivermectin (Soolantra) cream, which I use to treat pore mites (funnily enough, this stuff works for that, in addition to blood/snake mites). That said, the 45g tube of medication cost me well over $200 at the pharmacy. I'm starting to wonder if maybe I should look into getting some husbandry-grade stuff for my face instead of the pharmacy-grade. xP

    • @echothegekko4353
      @echothegekko4353 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dont know if the situation is the same but if the snake regurgitates its food dont offer for a week or two and then when you do it offer food again, make it half the size of their body. A slight amount bigger each feeding until you get to the roundness of their body again. It regurgitated either from stress from handling after a meal or the meal was a little too big. Dont handle for 2 days after feeding and black out the sides of the enclosure for a while so they dont feel as stressed or exposed. Hope i helped.

    Emily hi, snakes are not something i come in contact on a regular basis. I have had cobras and garden snakes come to my lawn. I have no idea weather a snake is venomous or not. For me, the only good snake is a dead snake, sorry. How can i deter snakes from coming to my lawn. Does dusting a layer of sulfur keep them away? What works?? I rather have wild weasels hanging around than snakes.
