  • In this video we cover the various things you should be checking prior to purchasing a snake to ensure it's healthy. Some are more obvious than others, but doing a thorough check on that cute snake you're interested in may allow you to catch health issues you may not want to deal with and didn't notice initially.

    I have a sad story. Ok so a while ago I saved up and bought my first snake. He was a gorgeous ball python. He was very under weight but and had a lot of stuck shed.
    After I got him the shed came off very quickly. But he refused to eat. I tried frozen thawed and live mice. The pet store told me that when they were feeding him they had to cover him. So i did and he still would not eat. I became very worried. Soon after I was holding him and decided to try and get him another mouse. I told my dad and he said we would go get the mouse the next day. That night I woke up and went to his tank and saw that his tail was in the water. I thought he just out for a soak so I went to the bathroom and when I came back he was still there. So I opened his enclosure and picked him up. He was ice cold with his mouth open and his substrate stuffed in it. I was so sad I started crying. My snake had died. After some research I found out that I had bought a sick snake. Now I’m mad about that and I’m still mourning him. Also just in case the zero people who will read this is interested I named him Ramen Noodle. He was loved

    Note about if a breeder refuses to let you see a snake before buying:
    If you are a serious potential buyer, they will likely at least take the animal out themselves and let you look at it. So even if they don't want you handling it, you can still examine the animal.

    • @Trynedge
      @Trynedge ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Great tip. If they don't want *you* handling it, then they should at least handle it themselves so you can get a good look, and ask them to do the checking for you with you observing.

      A good first step is finding a small-time breeder within travel distance of you if possible, that way you can visit their snake room and observe how their animals are kept (see their Enclosure sizes, hygiene levels, if they're co-habbing, etc) any breeder that refuses to show you where/how their animals are kept is usually bad news.
      Also you'll ideally want to physically inspect the snake (basically everything said in this video) that you want in person before handing over any money, also ask how old it is, what weight it is and ask to see that snakes records if they have any (Breeders that keep records is a good sign!)
      Also ask if they can show you a feeding/video of a feeding as dodgy breeders can lie about what type of food a snake is on, if their husbandry and records look good this isn't too big a deal but it's happened to me once before.
      On another note, them asking you questions like what type of enclosure you'll be keeping the snake in and what kind equipment and animal/reptile experience you have is also a good sign, shows that they care where their animal is going :)

      @@mistahroger698I’m also not entirely educated on the topic so take my words with a grain of salt but the genetic morph that leads to a spider also tends to lead to neurological problems. Just like breeding a horse and a donkey make a sterile mule because of the genetic morphing. I have heard that it doesn’t always happen with spider morphs but you’re taking a big chance when you get one because you just don’t know

    • @bluexwings
      @bluexwings 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@tianarhastings8372Just to clarify, breeding a donkey and a horse won't result in an animal with neurological problems. The spider gene causes difficulty eating, stargazing, corkscrewing, and the typical "wobble". Generally speaking, their quality of life is negatively impacted, and in my personal opinion it's kinder not to breed them.

Even though I've read lot's of articles by snake owners about for what to look at when buying a snake this video actually taught me for what to look at on the snake! Many articles where about “is the enclosure clean“, “come back a few times to see if the enclosure gets cleaned/if other snakes are put into the enclosure without cleaning it“, etc. Many didn't really talk about the snake itself.
    Also I've never read about signs of inbreeding so that was a great thing to hear!

      Hello, I know I am late though since you did not yet a reply I desided to say somthing.
      If you are comfortable with handling snakes you should be just fine doing these things as long as the breeder allows you to... now even if the breeder let's you open it's mouth, I would suggest just listening instead of going for that for it is just a bit more difficult to do if you are not used to it.
      I suppose if the breeder is good with helping you, that is a possibility though still would be careful especially if you don't know them well.
      Please have a wonderful day and I wish you luck if you do decide to get a lovely little danger noodle!

    I absolutely love how educational and honest your programs are! I've loved your youtube account for a while and I'm so glad you still are making new videos! I'm serious about buying a hognose snake as an emotional support animal, but I'm worried about whether the places I find sellers online are trustworthy or not. If you have any hognoses for sale or have suggestions on good sellers I may be able to find then that would be fantastic!

    Can you please do a video on snakes you can get that don't eat rodents
    (Garters/egg-eaters)
    And where to buy them
    (If you know any breeders)
    Thx for the vid

      Mateo Pavlov garters eat rodents.

      If you aren't comfortable handling rodents, then you shouldn't own a snake. Even garters need the occasional mouse for nutrition.

      Pastel Dreams YESSS! Garters could also eat the occasional worm, too!

      @katiet8620 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Michigan TheBest Females will almost always be bigger

    • @cometu4793
      @cometu4793 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For most species of snake the females will be larger because the bigger she is the more eggs she can have t ensure survival of offspring. There is always variation though and a female can be below average for her sex and a male could be above average.

I'm really wanting to get a Western Hognose soon (probably a few years from now) and I have been watching all of your videos on Hognose snakes to learn as much as I can about them. I've never owned a snake before and I want to make sure I go in with as munch info as I can before committing to a cute little noodle.

    My retics always have a whistle noise when they breathe. I havent noticed any other symptoms of a URI tho. Im a little worried something is wrong, but I dont have a big reason to go to the vet over it if there is no other symptom

    • @pr0r0gu3
      @pr0r0gu3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hasn't your nostril ever made a whistling noise? It's usually due to stuck substrate or shed in the nostril. Not much of a symptom of RI if you aren't also hearing gurgling or bubbling.

    I bought my first snake online from a breeder that I no longer support. He came to me with stuck shed and a head-wobble that I was not informed of. I've had him for a year now and even though I am disappointed in the breeder, I still love my snake. He is extremely healthy with me, hasn't had a bad shed since the first one (first snake so I goofed the humidity the first time he shed with me), he eats like a champ (which I was scared about since he's a ball python), and the head-wobble has gone away but he moves around with a slight head tilt. The information in this video is extremely helpful and I will put it to use in the future when I find the right time to get another snake.

    My dad told me he used to kill snakes for a living when he was my age (14) and continued to do it until he was 19. I didn’t know how to feel about it, because back then I didn’t care when he told me but now I feel kinda bad. He told me that he mostly killed rattlesnakes and any other snake they wanted him to kill.

    Thanks for this awesome video. I'm going to a reptile expo next weekend to get my first snake. I've always wanted a snake, but have only had leopard geckos for the past 6 yrs. Luckily, I have a brother who has owned various species of pet snakes and will be coming with me to help pick out the right snake, and so I don't go crazy and buy more than 1 snake. But glad I also have this info for myself to use.
