    I’ve kept tarantulas for over 20 years and it looks like you’ve lost the tarantula and haven’t check on it and it’s invited mites.
    Those these mites look like Acarus siro, which would have eaten off the mould, the reason why the roach hasn’t died is because they don’t drink haemolymph. They would have hitched a ride for better food.
    Since you’ve removed the source you’ll be fine, though each female can lay nearly 1000 eggs each, so that’s the reason why they explode in numbers. Had the same issue.
    Just wipe down the areas with bleach and keep and eye on it for a couple days and all will be fine. 👍🏼👍🏼

And if I dont see them for longer than a few weeks I start spying on them in the early morning hrs. And if no dirt in a clean water dish after 1 week I rehouse them. Even if they dig down and cover the entrance of the burrow they still come out at night every week or so to drink and leave proof in the water dish. Wierd he had a T vanish. It takes a good amount of time for the T to be eaten down to nothing. I use a Ring doorbell camera and place it on the tank of any T that hasnt been seen in 2 weeks or so. Also I noticed a Web next to the enclosure, is it possible that she escaped?

    • @mydogeatspuke
      @mydogeatspuke 3 ปีที่แล้ว +115

      Yes completely possible, in fact highly likely, that they were drawn to a decaying corpse as with many insects. Very concerning that there's no remains, as the only explanations for it paint him in rather a poor light.

    • @shinigamikitty
      @shinigamikitty 3 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Maybe the mites came for her molt, stayed for the roach, and the spider managed to escape. He is pretty diligent to his T's and knows how they behave. This one liked to not be seen, so it's harder to keep track of the hiders. I'm going to hope the T escaped somehow and ran away....or the massive amount of mites devoured her until hardly anything was left...sad 😥 😔 😟

    • @mydogeatspuke
      @mydogeatspuke 3 ปีที่แล้ว +124

      @@Dylan-bj3zy for there being no remains? That she escaped and he didn't notice is the only other explanation, which would be difficult for such a large animal. The enclosure would have been found open, which is highly unlikely to ever happen as spiders aren't stronger than magnets, and if they were then none of his enclosures would be fit for purpose. Which would mean he would need to have left it open and unattended and then not checked before closing it. Or as is far more likely, she was dead and eaten by the insects. Which means he would have been tossing in roaches and not checking that they had been eaten. If they are predatory mites like he suggests then this could have been developing for a month or two, maybe longer. That's a long time for a dead spider to go unnoticed and a lot of uneaten (by her) roaches. At the very least he should have noticed mites on the roaches and suspected there was an issue within a week or so. The problem with many of these pet TH-camrs is that they have far more animals than any one person can reasonably care for and so neglect frequently happens. Even if you wouldn't see your spider roaming their enclosure, you would still check the enclosure for things like pests and mould, strange growths, and that the prey is being eaten even if you don't witness a takedown. You wouldn't just throw in prey and otherwise ignore them, which is what it looks like he has done for this to have happened, which means it's likely his whole collection is subjected to the same level of neglect. We already know that he rushes mating and has killed many males due to impatience and improper set up and lack of knowledge, and that despite a wealth of information in the comments, he continues to ignore it and make these really basic mistakes that cost the spiders their lives. At best it's very poor husbandry, and at worst he is knowingly harming these animals for views. Either way it doesn't look good for him.

    • @Dylan-bj3zy
      @Dylan-bj3zy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      @@mydogeatspuke thanks so much for the thorough answer, I really appreciate it. All of that is very unfortunate but makes sense sadly enough. He does leave their enclosures open frequently and walk away to do a couple things before returning. My son got me into this channel and although he's still very young, he pointed that out to me right away. I don't know how any one person could reasonably handle that many pets and have any time left over to do other things. The rushed breeding really shocked me to be honest, seeing that one killed by the female in his video a few days ago was hard to watch. I didn't like the fact that he basically knew things would go bad but he did it anyway without introducing them in a catch cup first or have something available to separate them as I've seen others do. All of these possibilities seem reasonable and as you said, none of them paint him in a good light.

They are a harmless cleanup crew that will appear out of thin air if there isn't already a cleanup crew in that area. The problem of why they were on my tank in the first place is because I had mealworms in an enclosed plastic container on top of the tank and it quickly started to grow mold when I fed them produce so they appeared in the container and just explored the tank but didn't harm any of my animals at all. I removed the problem and kept the lid off of the container and they went away.

    If the mites are leaving the enclosure its a good sign that the main food source is gone, which probably was the dead T. Mites do take alot of time to get rid of an entire T, so saying you caught it early isnt realistic. Most probably they already spread to other enclosures. I had mites aswell and i guess alot of tarantula keepers do have mites at some point, but if you rly do keep an eye out its easy to spot them before the population explodes like they did here and to be honest if you would taken a closer look at your enclosures you would have spotted them probably weeks ago.

      Thats also my opinion, they look like those mites, that appear when there is a deceased food item in the enclosure. Those mites dont actually feed on their "host" but use it as a transport to other food sources. They also have it that they gather in the water dish. I think your T died and attracted them and their population exploded because of the huge amount of food.

    First thing you need to do is get the Tarantulas out of the cages that have mites and rehouse them. take those cages out of the room. vacuum and clean the room very well with a HEPA vac. Wipe down is good also of all surfaces. set up a lot of ventilation and air fans because mites can't stand air movement. Drop the humidity in the room also. There are many other removal tech out there. Good luck. Clean clean clean. And triage your spiders asap!

    The two most popular insect specialists used to control spider mites are a lady bug named Stethorus punctum and a predatory mite named T. pyri. These insects prey on two types of spider mites, the European red mites and the two-spotted spider mites, which are agricultural pests worldwide. Much of Biddinger's work is in Pennsylvania apple orchards, a prime target for both types of pest mites.

    These are likely grain mites. They come in all kinds of grain based foods (it's possible the roach food you're giving them has it in it =/) They like all kinds of grains (corn included). I once bought some pig feed to feed my roaches and before I even decided to feed the pig feed to my roaches I noticed there were a bunch of mites ON the feed bag... Needless to say I didn't even bother opening it and using it to feed my roaches.
    This goes for things like oatmeal as well (they'll infest that too). While I can't say they're very harmful to T's or even roaches, they are very very annoying and proliferate shockingly fast.
    Also, I have a terrarium where I grew my isopods and I was feeding them oatmeal as a little staple treat once and a while and I found these mites began to suddenly appear in the terrarium.
    What I did was add in some springtails to the terrarium and about 4-5 weeks later the mite problem was virtually gone.
    Springtails tend to breed quickly and the mites compete with them for a food source so eventually the springtails won out and the mites either left or died off.
    It might not be a bad idea to introduce springtails to all of your T enclosures since they're somewhat bioactive and if there are any mites the springtails may very well chase them out/kill them off.
    Springtails are harmless and will help break down rotting organic matter. This may also help with your mushroom/mold issue as well as the springtails will begin eating those as well helping to keep things cleaner in your enclosures.
    All it takes is a small amount of springtails in each enclosure to introduce a colony and they'll breed quickly afterward. They're harmless to T's as well! Worse things is they may begin to consume the molts lol
    I would highly advise adding springtails to your enclosures.
