Personally I think a Statistics Degree is better than no degree, but for being a Data Architect you need to build up a solid foundation on Data Engineering, and get some scripting skills.

Yes but you should have a deep knowledge related SQL , tableau , BI and python because data architecture is a part of analytics and modeling structure
