I have been tube fed. I thought I was going to die when it went in, I was gagging for 5-10mins. It was absolutely awful, traumatising in fact and I screamed and cried and really really did not believe it was necessary. You're right, its degrading, I was embarrassed. It's also incredibly uncomfortable and you have no control over it - which is extremely scary if you already have an eating disorder. A lot of people don't feel sick enough if they haven't been tubed, and that is just not correct. All hospitals have different policies regarding tubing, and if there are enough specialised staff on a ward, particularly an ED IP ward, they usually tube as a very very last resort. I was on a general childrens medical ward, therefore they tubed immediately

It might sound nuts to those who havent been there but as horrible as a tube would be...at least its survival when our own minds will not allow us to make a rational decision. It wasnt that i was wanting to die by not eating but i was willing to risk it in the sense that the eating disorder was so loud and controlling and influential in my thoughts that eating seemed scarier than death. I didnt want to die...but if i made the move in my own to eat it would be so difficult and seemingly impossible that the right decision that would same my life wasnt something i could do. When my mind isnt starved...i think better...make better choices...but in that state...i just cant reach actual logic that my life depends on. Anyways...wordy response to say i get it.
It's so hard for me to eat. I have arfid, celiac, ibs, lactose intolerant, and have severe anxiety. I'm working with a therapist but I just can't eat enough. At one point I was 89lbs, and I'm 5 10" I'm now 118lbs and so much better than 89lbs but I'm still tired all the time. Ugh so hard. My heart goes out to anyone else suffering with an eating disorder.
I’ve had 4 my tubes during my stay at the hospital for anorexia. They were AWFUL. If you just need one reason to recover, it’s so you don’t get a ng tube
+Vedder Palmer I agree about the music. I had edited it so it was low and only at 5% of the volume but it seems that when I set it to render the volume went full blast which is unfortunate.
+idranktheseawater I agree, yr videos are awesome Mel, but the music kind of makes it sound more like a commercial (maybe because it didn't come out as soft as you had edited it to). P.S. I am a binge/purge eater, I cycle from skinny to plump. Thanks.
It's called a nasogastric tube or an NG tube that's usually fed through the nose but can be surgically put in through your belly button into your stomach but that's usually for people who need it long-term. Hope this helps. Your hair looks amazing!
I posted a video a while bck saying how bad things got, I mean at the time its near impossible to see the damage and how ill you really are, and unfortunately for me I learnt that lesson too late and am living with the consequences, found this video really interesting to watch and the backing music is amazing. hope your doing well x
I know this video is way back but in 3 days I'm going to be forced im the hospital because I am 20 pounds underweight it's so hard for me to gain weight and especially KEEP IT.
That's terrifying so my phone at all in on one hand I'm glad that your psychiatrist was basically a jerk and gave up on you but on the other hand I'm not because Dr. should never do that so yeah hug
If you need it then it's the right thing. It's not pleasant and it's best obviously not to get that far but when its necessary then you are looking out for your best interest
Maybe you mentioned this in a different video, or perhaps it's too personal a question, but if your psychiatrist in the hospital gave up on you and they weren't forcing you to eat, what made your thinking shift and made you start eating again and trying to get better?
+Melissa McLaughlin I was still suicidal when I left so I went to a home for the suicidal. It was there I decided to move to Montreal and figured other possible plans for my future. I decided from there that things were going to change and I made Montreal happen and other things too so I was less discouraged and suicidal. I started eating again and gained some weight back
