- This is the classic MINI DIY documentary I made in the late 80's to celebrate Mini's 40th birthday. It became a collectible video in its day and probably the ultimate guide to what can be done to classic Minis by the people who really know. Janspeed were at the start of the development of the Mini Coopers and Cooper S's and became one of the most celebrated, successful tuning companies for race Minis, winning shelf full's of trophies.
The original video was an hour long so it has been divided here into four parts so please see the others in the series.

An old video that is accurate and correct. Unlike youtube channels porting, polishing, plugging and doing the stupidest things to heads, valves, springs and engine blocks.

3:21 It always amazes me when people plug pipes with a bolt that has a thread in it having a helix gap to let the fluid out.
If it's screwed in enough it works. That's why.
@@fivenine5905 yes but at what cost to the hose threaded fasteners can have sharp thread peaks that will cut into the rubber of the hose

JANSPEED VINTAGE RACE CAR I am looking for someone who knows about JAN4. Are those who were young engineers in this video survive?
God this is hilarious!. When Janspeed were taughting this 'genious' I had modified my MKII Cooper S to the point of full race 1340cc with a 15PSI Turbo charger with water and Nitrous micro injection.. circa 1982. iF there is anyone still interested in a serious Mini let me know.. I can give you the blueprint for a 200BHP at the front wheels totally wild yet manageable road car that will blow the doors of any Porche (well most), and leave rice burners looking a little challenged.. 200BHP in a car that weighs 610Kgs is like 400BHP in a car 1200kgs.. its quick!
So did Janspeed and long before anyone else as they were one of the original developers of turbo chargers for many cars which is well documented. In this video, made in 1989 by the way, they were demonstrating what was possible to do to a 'road car' which was drivable on an everyday basis including sitting in traffic jams without choking up, spluttering or simply dying. It was also done to show to non experts how the job might be tackled and what is involved. I doubt if your modification would even be allowed on the road let alone sit in traffic or last for very long. Remember at this time the engineering team at Janspeed were the legendary Jan Odor, Frank Swanstone (F1 designer) and David Vizard, most mini fans know, who obviously were able to build a full racer if required but that was not the brief here. Just to remind others, Janspeed were famous for building some of the most successful minis in the 60's-70's and helped the development of the fast Coopers and S'. Have a bit of respect before you use derogatory terms such as 'hilarious' to describe such a company who developed the techniques you probably used in your modifications. PS producing 200bhp on front wheels on a mini with small wheels would basically end up sitting there wheel spinning until no rubber was left and if it did go, you'd never stop it, love to see it in the wet.
Mate I dunno how old you are but you are talking about just one of the MANY companies at the time that were producing good engineering.. not the ONLY company.
My mini was engineered by my friend at Dehavilland and had all aircraft tech through it. In 1982 it was the fastest thing on the road and had the most amazing tech in it that later became popular with bigger manufacturers. Kid, don't tell me about respect. show some yourself. This was just one of the MANY English engineering shops that 'did good'. Agreed Vizard is/was a genius and I know his books word for word and his airflow designs are still lodged squarely in my mind and apply them daily to my Alfa's. I've done more to mini's than you will ever think about.
'Stoppers? Slotted and dimpled discs running full synth with adjustable bias back in 1982 was rocket science.. give it a rest kid.. the things we older guys have forgotten about would be your treasured gold..How do you think you have this information/experience? coincidence? Can you even imagine a 5 speed g'box or overdrive transfer gears back in 1984 on a mini? Tell me who did that back then... we did.

I am 64 years of age and a retired engineer and you still show no respect and assume everyone is inferior to your superior knowledge of what? I am not your 'mate' nor a 'kid' You obviously don't read well either as nowhere in my statement did I say they were the only ones but said they 'helped' develope the mini in the 60's which is a fact and Jan was an engineer in the famous Downton Engineering which was responsible for the development of the Cooper series. Just because you had a 'mate' at Dehavilland doesn't make you the final word in fast Minis. Like all engineering development, no one person can claim that they are the one who can judge other's work and use ignorant comments such as 'hilarious' to describe a great engineering company such as Janspeed. That 'hilarious' company since the 60's has built winning racing Minis, Datsuns, Sierra Cosworths, Nissan Skylines, Nissan Primeras etc..with some of the top designers working for them . and you built what?? By all means use this forum to pass on your knowledge and expertise to others who will appreciate it but you have no right to mock others as you keep doing.
