This was my first bought 4k and it's made me a collector, the look of details around the colony got me and must say the colours really set my Govee lights off beautifully. Great review and look forward to delving in to your channel as I start my collection (just watched your top 10 must have 4ks)
Personally i prefer the blu ray. The characters faces look plastic in the 4k to me. Each to their own though. I can imagine the younger audience wanting these older movies to look like movies do that are made today. For me i just don't like plastic looking characters. I remember hunting down an older blu ray release of 'Predator' because the newer one i had was DNR'd to hell and all the characters looked like manikins. The version with film grain looked way better. Wonder why the original Terminator movie hasnt had a 4k release yet? As a fan of sci-fi movies, horror movies, and the 1980's i think Its the best Terminator movie of the franchise. I can understand why the mainstream audience prefer T2 though. I really don't think 4k would do the original Terminator movie any favours. Specially in regards to some of the scenes with heavy use of practical special effects.
I've seen dozens and dozens of movies with DNR. This isn't the same and the AI technique has left detail intact. There is no waxiness. What I did notice is some odd edge enhancement on some objects, such as in Ripley'a room in gateway station.

CEX I’m finding I shop in a lot more regularly to pick up good secondhand stuff. Online I’m using Amazon UK and Amazon US. You will pay additional customs charges but they are on the website, so no surprises when the postman knocks! 🤣
Films should have film grain, it's where all the detail exists. Modern movies shot on electronic media don't have the same levels of resolution available in traditional film formats, but that doesn't really matter as they have other compensating factors, like HDR. In relation to this specific release (which I am unlikely to buy as I am very happy with the previous blu ray release) I would have preferred the approach taken with the Alien 4K release, which was beautiful, IMO, and doesn't leave you in any doubt that it was shot on very high quality film.
Just got my copy from amazon UK, expecting art work on sleeve to be bit better, even questioned if they sent me a duff copy as the text and colours at the back doesn't seem that sharp
Indefinitely agree with the op on this one . Movie vault has very accurate and reasonable 4k reviews 99% i agree whith his observation on the visual and audio presentations. He a Consistent and passionate movie guy. Salute
No doubt that will come later as companies love making you buy the same films over and over again for the more definitive edition or cash in on FOMO for the different artwork or limited edition slapped on
I’m not crazy about the cover art, but at the same time I’ve never really liked any of the poster art for this film anyway so it’s not a massive missed opportunity for me.
I quite like the cover art, the spine is great which it's important to me as that's all I'll see of it the majority of the time, a marked improvement over Alien 4K which is honestly my least favourite in my collection, especially with the leaking onto the spine.
It looks awful. Upscaled from a 2k source, DNR‘d as hell, AI sharpening, faces look like CGI, the black guy with acne scars looks like a rotten Zombie. The old Blu-ray from the same scan looks much better and filmic, without AI cr@p.

I like the remaster, and that's about it. cover is ugly as sin as are the disks. They should have given fans a part in this, there is amazing material in deviantart. blue ray cover custom by pipe1987. ALIENS by SteveDeLaMare. almost all of chelsea lowe's work would fit any 4k art like a charme.
Totally with you. I thought it looked fantastic. I didn't have any major issues with True Lies either. But Aliens looks incredible. Anyone who was complaining and saying these releases looked terrible weren't being honest.
@samuelgeaney7556 The grain is very fine, but it's there. Personally, I think the image is comparable to the Alien 4K. I had no issue with the quality and it's nothing like the T2 disc. With that disc there's something else going on besides just grain removal, it looks soft throughout and some of the colour gradients look low quality.
I love Aliens but to me the picture quality isn’t that much different 4K vs blu-ray. Now and then I compare movies from both formats and usually end up feeling a bit disappointed. The blu-ray’s are often just as god as the 4K versions.

Yes it’s one of my favourites also. I’m sure you will be impressed .Fair point obviously the jump from dvd to blu ray was more obvious just love my movies and I’m a bit of a nerd.
Dolby atmos is solid mate (I'm using 5.2.4) agreed with the cover art it's shit. But I think the new transfer looks excellent imo. We all should know camerons style by now so those flipping out about lack of grain really need to chill . 9/10 for me.
I loved the 4K presentation! So, that will be the version I always watch going forward. I will still keep my Anthology set in the collection though. 👍🏻
Meh, quite underwhelming tbh. It’s not really collectible if it’s just a transfer with bonus material, all the way back from the early 00s Would love a actual collectible with the movie. Not even a booklet? I dunno. I don’t care for the 4k transfer. I really digged when they re-released Alien 1979 with original postcards from the time. Giving you some history, that to me was worth the money. But yeah, don’t like the cover art they chose ether. Quite cheep. No real artwork put into it. If you can buy it digital, then it’s not a collectible imo. Just a transfer. Also heard that A.I helped with the 4k transfer. That’s quite mad if that’s true.
Not a ran of 4k James Cameron series, to much AI tempering, same goes for True Lies & T2. Picture has been enchanted to much, that it looks like it was shot yesterday on digital. Plus the colours as textures to much.
I think it looks great. I don't understand what people are seeing when they say skin detail has been scrubbed along with the grain making them look like wax, this is really not the case. Skin tone looks spot on, you can see pores and hair follicles etc. I've heard people say the colour grading has been ruined, again this isn't the case. I've got a proper Atmos set up and it sounds fine though I still feel Atmos is massively over rated. Over all I feel this has a big uptick in depth and granular detail, only thing letting it down is the appalling box art, can't believe somebody got paid for doing that.
The AI DNR killed it for me. The atmos audio mix is meh. Still glad I got it for the completionist in me but happier I have the anthology boxset on bluray.
how can you review 4k HDR Blurays on TV that small? yikes! at least grab a 50", they're cheap as hell these days. great review though. I just got original Alien 40th anniversary 2 disk with HDR10+ and it IS SICK on my 60" HDR10+ TV (especially with Govee ambient lighting) :P
Too much of it looks like AI has been used to clean up the film, and too much grain has been removed. Everyone looks like a wax figure. I'm still happy with the Quadrilogy boxset from 2003. I have the blu ray box set from 2017 in a steenbok, but I still find myself going to the DVDs for a more authentic 70's/80's experience with the first two films if I'm being totally honest. If there is a 4k box set released at some point I may pick that up, but I am not sold on this at present, simply for the film grain and colour grading.
I just watched Oliver Harpers Review and in his opinion the Blu Ray is still the better choice. Because the color of the blu ray stays the same from start to finish. Also the Sound on the Blu Ray still Sounds better. Just look how bad the Terminator 2 4K version is. The color of the movie is all over the place. I watched the new verson once and will still choose the blu ray over 4K anyday of the week. Oh the New Aliens Cover looks great. Ripley and Newt. They are the main Characters in my Opinion. So Yea they Should be on the Cover!

Movies on physical media should all come with the original theatrical poster art.

I got the Aliens 4k on Monday and seeing it on Saturday. Glad you liked the new 4k transfer it's a really great film.

The only difference for me is that grainy image in Blu-ray version is cleared up in 4k polished up edition..

2014 US Bluray better experience. Aliens 4K is clear image but it's smoothed out. Faces look strange to me. True Lies was definitely worse though

Not a ran of 4k James Cameron series, to much AI tempering, same goes for True Lies & T2. Picture has been enchanted to much, that it looks like it was shot yesterday on digital. Plus the colours as textures to much.
I think it looks great. I don't understand what people are seeing when they say skin detail has been scrubbed along with the grain making them look like wax, this is really not the case. Skin tone looks spot on, you can see pores and hair follicles etc.
I've heard people say the colour grading has been ruined, again this isn't the case.
I've got a proper Atmos set up and it sounds fine though I still feel Atmos is massively over rated.
Over all I feel this has a big uptick in depth and granular detail, only thing letting it down is the appalling box art, can't believe somebody got paid for doing that.

The AI DNR killed it for me. The atmos audio mix is meh. Still glad I got it for the completionist in me but happier I have the anthology boxset on bluray.
He's using the added bluray in the 4k edition..... shocking.

how can you review 4k HDR Blurays on TV that small? yikes!
at least grab a 50", they're cheap as hell these days. great review though. I just got original Alien 40th anniversary 2 disk with HDR10+ and it IS SICK on my 60" HDR10+ TV (especially with Govee ambient lighting) :P

Too much of it looks like AI has been used to clean up the film, and too much grain has been removed. Everyone looks like a wax figure. I'm still happy with the Quadrilogy boxset from 2003. I have the blu ray box set from 2017 in a steenbok, but I still find myself going to the DVDs for a more authentic 70's/80's experience with the first two films if I'm being totally honest. If there is a 4k box set released at some point I may pick that up, but I am not sold on this at present, simply for the film grain and colour grading.

This one missed the mark bog time.
I just watched Oliver Harpers Review and in his opinion the Blu Ray is still the better choice. Because the color of the blu ray stays the same from start to finish. Also the Sound on the Blu Ray still Sounds better. Just look how bad the Terminator 2 4K version is. The color of the movie is all over the place. I watched the new verson once and will still choose the blu ray over 4K anyday of the week.
Oh the New Aliens Cover looks great. Ripley and Newt. They are the main Characters in my Opinion. So Yea they Should be on the Cover!
