Hey ! Moroccan guy speaking here : Argan oil is actually great with just bread and honey, other than that, you can make an almond, argan and honey spread that is super typical (called Amlou). I've tasted some "odd" argan desserts (creme brulee, vanilla ice cream ...) and it actually brings forward the argan flavour beautifully !

    • @lucas8579

Yh it is great with honey. Do you know how it is "traditionally" produced tho? Its a bit weird, to get rid of the fruits flesh, they let goats eat it and spit out the seed instead of painstakingly removing it themselves.

I can’t drink much because of health concerns. If someone bought that sparkly wine substitute for a party, to be considerate of me and other non-drinkers, I would feel really honored and special.
I think that’s likely what the drink is intended for. That, and non-drinking age birthday parties.

I first learned of alcohol-free wine from a friend who buys it for her Mom who can no longer drink alcohol. What she buys tastes like wine but doesn't have alcohol in it, making it different from sparkling grape juice and the like that you can get from supermarkets. I think what James drank tasted more like fruity soda to him so you might as well buy fruity soda and serve it in a champagne glass. I have a feeling that just like regular wine, you have to try different brands to find one that suits your tastes.

That cake/massive round chocolate bar works out at roughly 3.95 per 100g. For quality artisanal chocolate, that’s actually a pretty fair price.

Neither of those are really top-quality chocolate. I wouldn't buy that big of a chunk of chocolate, either, but if they sold it in wedges I might buy a quarter-round.

Hi lads! I'm the founder of Arganic and just wanted to say that I enjoyed this video very much, very entertaining! What a lovely surprise and it seems you really did your research and paid attention to the details :) Team Arganic are very grateful! Glad you came around to the flavour of the argan oil at the end and that you appreciated the heritage and story. I'm a massive fan of olive oil too, I guess I try not to compare the two- nothing can or should replace olive oil, they are different, but variety is the spice of life! I recommend argan oil on pancakes with honey, on boiled potatoes with cumin & salt (sounds boring but trust me), in a salad dressing with apple cider vinegar. The unique health benefits are not to be underestimated either. It's really interesting the whole topic of pretentious foods, I'm originally from the Middle East and often feel as though my food may come across pretentious because of the 'fancy' ingredients, when in reality it's just how people eat within these cultures. Glad you picked up on this point in this video! For those who are interested in trying and didn't manage to get a bottle through Selfridges before they sold out you can check us out here www.arganic.co.uk. Lots of love, Dana.

I live in the middle of the peak California tomato area. It's like plant a tomato vine and stand back; in two months you will have loads of perfect summer tomatoes. I like to slow roast the largesse sliced with salt, thinly sliced onion, and a drizzle of California olive oil. That further concentrates the already peak flavors. Nothing better than those (thawed from frozen in small sandwich sized wads) on a toasted bacon and Duke's mayo sandwich. The bacon isn't the star - the tomatoes are, by far. Sharp, sweet, and screaming July. Thanks for sharing your fun videos!

Fun fact... The Argan Oil, and other products like it, is what "cultural appropriation" actually means. (Although, if the label is true, they the exception to the rule)
Western corporations would walk up to a village in some forsaken corner of the Amazon, or Sahara, or whatever, and ask the locals "How do you treat *insert whatever.*" They would tell them about some local herb. These plants usually grow only in small parts of the world.
The representative would collect samples, take them to the lab, and find out if there's anything useful there. If so, they'd then go and buy all the land that the plant grows on. From the government. The villagers would get nothing. And, depending on the situation, might be forcibly removed from the now private property.

@@yoissmee1244 Berber hasn't been used as a slur since the early romans, and the word has lost a lot of its historical connotations. That being said, the product does seem a bit exploitive, majority of women who work in argan oil processing in Morocco are among the poorest in the berber population; and I highly doubt that they're getting paid fairly.

  • @yums0me
    @yums0me 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Argan oil is lovely, especially when used to make amlou. I lived in Taroudannt (in the Souss Valley) for a while, which is not far from the only place that argan grows - all those pics of goats in trees you've seen? Those are argan trees! I used to have argan oil with my breakfast every morning to dip my khobz into. Gorgeous stuff!
The trouble with it being brought to the West is that now it's priced out of reach for local people. Whereas not that long ago it was a staple food, because around 75% is now exported to the West, what's left is prohibitively expensive for the average Moroccan/Berber person.
Yes, it's great that there are co-operatives that make sure the people working there get a wage (around $50 per month for full-time, sometimes backbreaking, work) but it's not good that people who've relied on it for centuries for food, cosmetics, and medicinal purposes have to now go without because of demand in wealthier countries. It's a bit of an ethical grey area, really, because we absolutely don't need it... but if we're conscious in our purchases, we can help put money into the pockets of those who rely on argan oil.
Westerners are getting ripped off, too though because most cosmetics and toiletries (that claim it to be an ingredient) contain so little argan oil, it's completely ineffective (especially where hair care products are concerned). Unfortunately, there are also a lot of adulterated argan oils on the market which are usually cut with far cheaper ones, such as pomace, sunflower, etc. Bottom line - argan oil and products containing it should never be cheap or super-affordable!

Brought some toasted argan oil back from Morocco. Use it to add a deep nutty flavour to roasted vegetables (typically pumpkins, sweet potatoes, carrots). It's also great to add a few drops to a vinaigrette. I understood that the taste depends of the roast level of the argan nuts. Argan oil has a very low smoke point so definitely not to be used to cook/bake.

There are exceptionally few "fancy" alcohol-free drink alternatives; a soft drink or a mocktail just doesn't have the same sort of societal clout as a bottle of wine. For a wedding where not everyone drinks, a fancy alcohol-free beverage can really help people feel included.
