      I definitely respect your opinion, Ken. I am kind of hoping Tunerworks heavily discounts any detector I decide to keep. I understand the benefits are minimal, but just having a second set of eyes on the intersection cameras helps ease my anxiety for entering an intersection just as the signal turns yellow and seeing the flash of the camera go off. We have an extraordinary level of surveillance here in Calgary and knowing where those cameras are located takes the edge off. I am sure there is a phone app that could do the same thing, though. At any rate, I'm just demo'ing this one to see if it makes sense to keep. Like I said in the video, the jury is still out. I will take your advice and grab a Low pro from Vyper at some point.

    Rick, for the salt on your mats, use steam + a little brush i think it will do the job

    • @RADGarage
      @RADGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steam will definitely do the job, but pulling out the steamer and letting it warm up is just too much of a pain for these intermittent cleanings. If I have a lot of time, there are a number of highly effective cleaning processes I can follow, but its the quick wipe downs that leave me a bit frustrated with the salt in the seams.

    Hey Rick, awesome to see an update of the garage! In work a side job as a car mechanic and in our shop, we use lights like the Light Stix with the attachment as interior ligts, by putting the clams on either side of the car around the door jambs, at the top of where the doors meet the chassis when closed. Obviously, for this to work, both driver and passenger doors need to be openend. Sorry for this vague description, I don't know how to describe it in another way. This may scratch the paint to keep an eye out for that, but combined with a microfiber towel it could work perhaps.
    This provides great lighting without it being in your way when disassembling, or in your case, cleaning.

    • @RADGarage
      @RADGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just don't know if this extender bar will extend far enough to go from door jamb to door jamb. I will have to try it out once work slows down and I can spend some quality time in the garage.

    I enjoy watching someone reviewing a product without first using it. It shows how simple or complicated it may be to the average Joe.
    My 2 cents on radar detectors. A false sense of security to the driver. The number of people I have ticketed for speeding that have a radar detector is high. They purposely speed and assume the detector will warn them before they or clocked by police. As far as the red light alert, if one is a red light runner, it’s only a matter of time, they will be responsible in a red light collision. Save your money and just drive responsibly. City speeders just beat me to the next right light.
    Thanks for another great video.👍🇨🇦

    • @RADGarage
      @RADGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the insights. Honestly, I'm not a real threat for speeding, but when my son's hockey takes me to all corners of the city, it can be a pain when they set up speed cameras on roads that have a ridiculously low speed limit. The only tickets I seem to get are going 60-ish km/h in a 50 on a road that should easily be 70 or 80. It's a real frustration for drivers here. But, that said, you gotta pay to play so I do my best to follow all posted speeds and avoid tickets.

    • @cleanasdirt6832
      @cleanasdirt6832 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RADGarage my snack bracket, excluding school zones, was 15 kmh over if posted speed limit was 60 or less. For highway I allowed 21 kmh over. I gave a lot of latitude on giving a ticket to a driver.

    Rick, RE: floor mats, have you tried using forced air? Do you have a Torador? or the one that can spray liquids when blowing? After matts are clean, have you tried an interior coating on them? Or have you tried steam? I find a mixture of White Vinegar & Distilled water sometime works on salts? Perhaps a small drill brush may work in the small cracks and crevices?

    • @RADGarage
      @RADGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When it comes to thoroughly cleaning the mats, there is no real issue. I have a number of effective ways of clean the Tuxmat liners. The issue I have is trying to rid the seams of salt when I only have a few minutes to spare to clean them up. Pulling out the steamer takes too long and requires more effort than I want for a quick tidy up. Vinegar is wonderful at breaking down salt, but even then, the salt dilutes in the water and you think it is gone, only to see it reappear once the water has evaporated. Spraying the liners down with an APC and blasting them with the pressure washer, back and front, is the only way to fully eliminate any salt residue. I'll be sure to feature this process on the channel when I get some more hospitable weather.

      So far, I have had the OEM's, Weather Tech, Husky Liners, and now the Tuxmat liners. I have to say, the Tuxmats are by far my favourite. I just think the material they are made from is the best combination of sophisticated, comfortable and durable. No slight on the others, but I found them too hard and they did begin to warp and wear after a few seasons.

    On the mats with the salt residue on the edging, have you tried using the pressure washer nozzle with shop vac hose at the end to suck up the water as you're spraying it?

    • @RADGarage
      @RADGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pressure washing the mats cleans them 100%. It just leaves them saturated and sometimes I don’t have time for them to hang dry.

    • @isilkenk2
      @isilkenk2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RADGarage Agreed. I used to get the same problem on the edges of the factory mats when I lived in Ottawa and only pressure washed the edges and shop vac would suck up the excess water while spraying and I would vacuum the edging to get most of the water of the mat. I agree it's not an easy process. Now a days I live in Arizona and don't have to deal with the snow and salt. :-)

      I think I have heard of that. Honestly, I can get the salt out no problem when I have the time, but doing a quick clean of the liners leaves some salt in the seams. I just need to make sure I perform regular and thorough cleans throughout the winter so the residue doesn’t build up and harden.

    Brrrr. How’s the basin working out?

    • @RADGarage
      @RADGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The super dry winter air results in quick evaporation of the water channeled to the basin and that vapour is captured by my dehumidifier so clean water ends up being poured down my utility sink and I just vacuum out the remains in the basin. It’s an ongoing, real life science project.

    Hey Rick, I have a question: Is there a law to drive in winter tires or is it your choice to do so? Because it looks so weird that you guys talk about winter tires in the winter. In Germany and I guess in all of Europe it is a law to drive on winter tires when there is snow.
    And one other question: Nokian is just a very basic and "ok-ish" brand for tires. Did you already try out premium brands like Continental, Michelin and Dunlop?
    I would never drive in other tires than those.
    Those are really high quality premium tires.
    Great video! Keep up the work! :)

    • @RADGarage
      @RADGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The province of Alberta has not passed a law that requires winter tires, but Quebec and BC do have such laws. I don't think they are required on all roads in those provinces, though. I wish Alberta would pass a tire law because the number of drivers that put us all in danger with their bald all-seasons is too high. I get so frustrated with the drivers that hold everyone up as they sit there spinning their wheels at intersections because they don't understand the science behind tires. Maybe one day our government will step up and make the decision to require all vehicles to be equipped with winter tires, but we tend to enforce petty laws rather than pass important ones 😡
      I am a bit surprised to hear you view Nokian as just "Ok" tires. Here, they are marketed as a premier brand of tires. When I first heard about them, people were raving. I have had a number of tires over my life, and I have been very impressed with the Nokians. Like I mentioned in the video, I am finding these R5 Hakka's even better than the previous R2's. I know there are a number of quality choices out there, but I think the marketing and the fact that Nokians are Finnish is what sold me on them. I have a strong affinity for the country of Finland. That said, I would be open to trying other brands when the time comes to replace my current ones.

      @@RADGarage ok, sorry I think All-Seasons and Winter Tires ok. I thought you would be allowed to drive with summer tires 😅 Maybe Allseasons are not the best choice in Canada but in Germany they are ok in a lot of regions.
      Well, you seem right that the finnish people should know about snow and their tires. Thats true.
      Maybe the Nokian Tires are better in Canada than they are here in Germany, but as far as I know only Continental, Michelin, Dunlop and maybe Pirelli produce the best tires. Mostly Conti and Michelin win most awards for best Winter tires.
      I dont know if you guys have any car magazine tests or something but maybe the Nokians are best choice for canada :)
      Some markets are different than others.

      Where I am located, we see amazing fluctuations in temperatures throughout the year. Running a dedicated set of summer tires, that are really only suited for summery conditions, is a bit of nightmare since cold temps can hit at any point in the year. I am looking forward to ditching the summers next Spring and equipping the SQ5 with a high quality set of All-Seasons because they offer more flexibility. When the mercury drops below 7 degrees Celsius, the winters go on and stay on until the Spring. It's not the law here, but it just makes sense.
