I kept telling myself did I make the right decision of enlisting. It all changed when Reagan was elected. Moral improved greatly, equipment improved. A freaking Pay Raise. I was going to do my 1 tour and get out. But with Reagan as our Commander in Chief, I re-enlisted for two more tours. The best damn President of the 20th century. I remembered him putting on the cover at the end. Looking at this video he did fine. My memory was that he looked goofy with the cover on his head. That must have been my mentality because I arrived on April 27, 1986 and was in full throated boot mode.

I was there also, platoon 2056. I thought the same thing about his cover.... thought it looked like a ball cap on him. I was there May 6- August 1 1986. I remember our DI's asking us, " who in our platoon was a Democrat?"...those who raised their hand ended up on firewatch and didn't go see the president. I seem to recall that they took our bolt carrier groups out of all of our rifles.

It starts at childhood. Family of Marines.
    Blood.
    That’s it.
Simple as that. My father, me, and my son who is currently 11 years old, I know already beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is going to be a Marine. Even if I don’t want him to. Because of the decisions and spirit of his family before him.
He has learned in his 11 years where he cane from. And there is not a damn thing I can do to stop it. Sooner or later whether me and my wife want it or not, there will be a recruiter in our kitchen with paperwork, and my boy WILL go to PISC, by his own will.
First time I saw my dad cry was when his father lay in a casket. A former officer of the Mighty Eighth , a navigator of a B-17 over the 3rd Reich, I couldn’t believe it. I was young as hell that day.
A long time later......second time I saw my pop cry, he a former 0311, A 1/7 Marine, off of Hill 55, Vietnam.....was when my recruiter came to pick me up for MEPS.....travel date to PISC. When I saw him break down, it scared the F out of me. What do you know that I don’t know? What did I get myself into?
I know my dad saw his buddies die. Many of them. Some of which I could put their names here.
And when I got picked up to leave, now being a father myself, I’d be willing to bet he regretted ever speaking of his former prior deeds.
My kid asks about it all the time. Every time my kid asks about it, I see my pop crying on the front door step.

The Marine Corps in the last decades of the Cold War operated on a mere 6% of the defense budget. You are not likely to find more bang for the buck with any other corps of warriors who can fight and win combined arms battles anywhere in the world on very short notice.

There is an acronym that describes Marines: MUSCLES ARE REQUIRED, INTELLIGENT NOT ESSENTIAL, SIR!!! That is about an inaccurate as one can get, although I've used the same acronym in joking with some of my family members and other friends and acquaintances, who have served in the United States Marine Corps. Kudos to all who have served with valor in the U.S.M.C. And thank-you President Reagan for your service and all you have done for our nation. You are truly loved and missed.
