  • Even wondered what would happen if your car's engine ran out of oil, but were too afraid to test it out? Well, wonder no more! Mat's brought along a Honda Civic, Peugeot 206 and Ford Focus to see what would happen to these everyday heroes if you try and run them when they're completely dry of fluid. But which will rum for the longest? Let us know in the comments, then watch the video to find out!

I’ve been a mechanic for 10 years next month.
Only car I’ve ever seen run after loosing a drain plug is a civic.
Thing came in after driving in the highway at 120. Air cooling I guess. No oil, cracked intake manifold, and exhaust manifold, spark knocking like an SOB.
Only issue is the clutch needed to be replaced…
If you want a reliable car, buy a Honda. If you want a reliable truck buy a hilux/Tacoma.

I’ve gained a lot of respect for Japanese cars. I grew up with Ford and American cars in general so that being what I knew that’s what I preached was best. But while many Japanese cars as they are from the factory are not much performance wise, they’re bullet proof, which also means you can throw boost at stock engines and outrun a lot of muscle cars. They’re definitely good cars. And something I thought I’d never say, I think my next car is going to be a Honda

Toyota and Honda are total GOATs when it comes to reliablity. VW and Mercedes used to make brilliant Diesel engines before the mid 2000s and any VW 1.9 TDI or SDI as well as any Mercedes 2.1 CDI are rock solid if you like Diesels, Mercedes C class of any description up to 2000 is also rock solid on reliability.

I noticed that too. The oil pan on those Civics most definitely does not retain a significant amount of oil after it's drained though. Makes me wonder if they faked the Honda result and left some oil in it. That combined with how long as it lasted, it looks like they might have just drained the coolant from the Honda.

@@fudgepads19 There really is, 90's Hondas are incredibly well built. I recently bought a 1997 Civic with the D16Y7 and it still runs as good as new after 27 years and 354K miles. Original engine and trans except gaskets, belts, cap, rotor, spark plugs, filters, etc. It was owned by an older Honda tech for nearly its whole life, so it was very well maintained and not riced.

You are right. If the oil pressure light glass isn't on, there is still enough oil.
The connecting-rod bearings in a Honda engine are nothing out of the ordinary; they would have failed as quickly as the others without pressurized oil.
And depending on whether the engine has a cast-iron or aluminum block, the pistons can lock up more or less quickly without cooling.
A french channel did the same thing with a Citroën Saxo, and as with the Honda, they were able to go several kilometers "without oil" before the warning light came on. Because here too, there was enough oil left to pump.

Theres an urban legend that there has never been a Honda engine failure (in normal use). I'm very sad that the UK factory is closing down, I've had 2 UK made Hondas and they are superb. I used to think German cars were good when I was young and didn't know better, but that was in comparison to British Leyland ones which looking back were terrible. Mercs up to about 1990 are good too, but parts cost more as most of them get exported to Africa so hard to get used spares from breakers.

I proudly began my life as a brand new Honda, serving a loving family of three. The young dad cared for me very well, washing me every weekend. I witnessed many happy moments and watched the kid grow. I was so happy when the kid painted a beautiful picture of me. This was my happiest memory. I was latter sold to a young student, carrying him through many challenges in life. Finally, he got a good job, we parted ways with bittersweet farewells.
Now, I find myself abandoned and neglected, suffering at the hands of a person named Matt. I never knew this would be my end, I still want to live on for another 10 years, maybe 20, or even more 🥺😭 I could not die here…

    A friend of mine ran a 2004 Fabia 1.4 90hp.
I asked him what going on with his oil light coming on and goes away .
“Probably the level sensor” he answered .
Later that week I told him to check the oil together .
Long story short we added 3.25lts of oil that was missing .
The fabia was in that condition for at least 2.5 months .
Last oil change 22.000 km …
No engine knocks , no hiccups no nothing .
    Works like anew engine .

My first car was a 1980 mustang. My dad took out the original engine and slapped a newly rebuilt 302 small block in. On the next oil change, he was teaching me how to do it, then he started the car and said we need to see that the oil pressure gauge moves and he's tapping it thinking the needle is stuck. Young me says Dad, don't we need oil IN it to have oil pressure? I have never seen my dad's face so red!!

2:20 The engine speed drops and the engine goes into hunting mode, but this is not due to damage to the engine.
This is the ignition prevention control mode.
All Honda cars from about 20 years ago have this control.
If you fall asleep with the engine running and press the accelerator unintentionally, we purposely set the hunting to prevent it from catching fire.
This is to lower the exhaust temperature.
Depending on the engine with a high maximum rotation speed, it will enter this mode in about 30 seconds.
Once you let go of the accelerator, lower the revs, and then fully open the accelerator again,
The engine speed will rise again to near the red zone.
It wasn't broken, it was working properly.
