Great video man. I just got the entire Kicker system installed in my WRX and it sounds SOOOOO much better than the stock system. It's like night and day. I highly recommend this upgrade.
Do you have Oem head unit ? I’d like to keep my stock one but hear it doesn’t sound the best
I ordered those tweeters recently. I'm doing a similar upgrade as you but in reverse order. Last September I replaced my stock head unit with the iDoing first (mainly because my original head unit didn't have navigation built-in, and I really wanted that). Worked great for the past 10 months or so with my stock speakers, but the left rear speaker actually blew at some point, so I only had three working speakers for a while.
Then just this past week I replaced my door speakers with JBL 621F's. I was actually a bit worried about those speakers and almost exchanged them for different ones, because they're rated at 3 ohms instead of the usual 4 ohm. Crutchfield kinda re-assured me that the JBL's would be fine, because they're tailored to work like 4-ohm speakers. So, I kept them, got silicone speaker baffles for them on Amazon, and installed them.
Next, I've got the Kicker H631SFJ101's coming in tomorrow and I'll install those after I get out of work. Between those and the JBL's with their really good bass handling, I feel like I'm gonna have a pretty nice setup even without a subwoofer or external amp. I mostly listen to video game music or classic rock, and normally I don't blast the radio or go insane with the bass boosting.
Sometimes it can be really tricky researching which speakers work, and which don't-- especially with a lesser-known head unit brand like iDoing. Pair that with the fact that I've literally never done a car audio upgrade before and I am not a car guy by any means, you can get lost pretty quickly with all the different options, LOL.
I was looking into that Kicker sub hard. What killed it for me, at least for 08-14's, you gotta remove the sub to lift the trunk floor up to get to the tray and spare tire underneath. I use the tray a lot, it was a deal breaker, I'm going to get a slim sub and put it under my seat. May not be as good, but space is more important to me than bass. For the first time ever. Dadlife.
That head unit is awesome, btw.
Literally my issue, upgraded my head unit and it was great, went with upgraded speakers and lost all my low end, so now I'm going to be throwing a sub and amp into the mix
Great video, I have a Legacy, changed my head unit for a Pioneer, 3.5 tweeters 6x9 front speakers got back ones ordered 63/4s they are Kickers as well, as for what you did/changed it's totally up to you what ever makes you happy, oh by the way she looks very nice, thanks for sharing.
That's a good idea. Bringing out the highs with the tweeters and making the sound clearer may be all someone needs to do to make the entire system come to life. Thanks for the advice. 100 bucks is a safe place to start for anyone.
My 15 Sti is a Limited (Used) and it came with the Harmon Kardon Setup but a lame head unit. I’ll be upgrading that with a unit from Crutchfield.
Definitely going to buy the oem upgrade and idoing hesd unit, I love my music and the base model speakers are really bad and aren’t loud and get distorted when it gets louder
Super informative and exactly what I was looking for. Thank you
Ok! I'm sold! Adding all the kicker upgrades to my list :)
Hey Chris, I installed my headunit this weekend, but was not able to hook the same subwoofer you have. Do you have an install video on how to connect the subwoofer to the headunit? Thanks
I don’t have a video in that but it just plugs right in with the factory sub harness.
Nice, Just bought the tweeter from your link.
This was very helpful since I currently have the Kicker speakers and tweeters and lacking that bass from the upgraded speakers. Will be buying the sub for sure now!
Glad to have helped! You’ll love the sub.
Great video man. I've been looking into getting better quality tweeters and door speakers to go with my 2 12" kenwood subs. I've got all the bass I need but if I turn my volume above 20 bass is all I hear.
this helped! im looking to upgrade my sound system too. I have a 2020 sti base model and the head unit is perfect but the speakers can be better
The kicker upgrade will be what you’re looking for!
I have a 2020 sti base as well and want better speakers as well.
That system need a 10+ band EQ. I feel like it's missing some key frequencies.
i got the kicker upgrade to and everybody complain about the stock audio in this car but with kicker i thing they sound really good! I only have speaker upgrade not sub and twiter and the are to much bass already! i imagine if i upgrade twitter i have to take sub to to have a more balaced sound!
The tweeters make the biggest difference! Definitely suggest picking them up.
Does anyone know what the part numbers are for the Speed Clip and the Knob that holds the woofer?
I just got the kicker sub with no harness, can you link where you bought yours? Great video, really helpfull and detailled!
Link is in the description
@@Autofreakgarage Sorry for the missunderstanding, not the subwoofer link, but the sub harness. You said you bought it to install the sub
amzn.to/3K5qJYn
@@Autofreakgarage Thank you!
Hey man thanks for the video ,l am about to do the same setup on the same car and color, mine is a 2020, my question is what harness did you buy for the sub, where can I get one/ what is the part number for they I didn’t see it in ur parts list , also is the sub install easy did it require trimming of the rubber mat ? Thanks in advance .
Subaru OEM kicker harness. I have the part number at the end of this video. Install is easy, just took some time to run the harness to the headunit. Yes, it requires some trimming of the trunk mat.
When you bought the wiring harness for the subwoofer was it a long harness that ran from the sub to the head unit or was it something smaller and you had to add other wiring?
It’s a long wire that runs the whole length of the car basically.
@@Autofreakgarage thanks!
Did the subwoofer harness plug right into that idoing head unit?
Yes
Hey Scooby! Not sure if you’ll see this but how did you wire the oem sub to the idoing so lost on wiring
The kicker harness just plugs right into the I doing.
Thanks for answering! Im lost cause it came with 2 white squares and one ground cable. Do the male and female squares go into each other?
I couldnt find a place on the actual idoing for a plug male or female
Nice vid.. been researching & planning to upgrade my xv crosstrek. Your video is helpful, been thinking what speakers will i buy.. quick question, is this just for sti’s or any subaru cars? I think the sub is mounted at the side. I saw in other videos its mounted at the side panel at the back/cargo area..
I believe these will fit the crosstrek as well, but I am not 100% on that. Yes the sub is mounted to the driver side of the trunk.
Would you recommend just the tweeters & subwoofers?
For sure. But the whole package sounds really good. Try just the tweeters first and see what you think. Good thing is, that’s the cheapest part of it all.
Scoobyfreak86 awesome man. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll definitely look into them. 👍🏼
I have a question on the kicker sub I have 2020 Sti and don’t want to get rid of the stock head unit is it possible to run the kicker with the stock head unit ?
Yes. The speakers and sub are a factory option from Subaru. Plug and play to stock unit.
If I buy the OEM audio+ speaker upgrade kit that comes with an amp do I still need to upgrade my head unit? Or would it be pointless. Id rather keep the stock head unit but I don’t wanna miss out on audio quality. Big music guy.
The OEM+ setup is great for the stock headunit. Try the oem+ setup on stock unit first. If you are unhappy, then do the headunit.
After adding the IDoing Head unit did it improve the sound? Like could you tell a difference from stock to that one? Thinking of going this exact same setup
Yes a big difference. For the cost of the upgrade, it is night and day better quality.
Did you install the subwoofer bass limiter? I’m looking at the whole setup right now and that’s part of it
I didn’t. I prefer a bit more bass overall so I didn’t find the need. Plus, with the idoing, you can adjust the bass with the EQ.
Do you mind sharing where you bought the harness? I just bought a used subwoofer like you but it's missing the harness that connects to the idoing headunit.
Thank you!
It’s directly from Subaru
@@Autofreakgarage should I just tell them I'm looking for a subwoofer harness?
For the kicker sub yes. I believe I show the part number in this video somewhere.
Do you need an amp to add these speakers or does the stock stereo have enough power. I just want the tweeter and door speakers
No amp Is needed. Plug and play
Does the idoing head unit have the outlet for the same plug for my backup camera? I already have. Or do I have to buy the backup camera they offer?
Plugs into the factory camera
Did you do an install video for the speakers?
I do not have a video, but I have a write up on my journal for them. forums.nasioc.com/forums/showpost.php?p=45611237&postcount=815
How is your idoing headunit doing? Mine has a small white smudge & debris inside the screen. Its only been a month & I hope more debris don’t get inside lol
Had mine or 2.5 years and have had 0 issues. It has been flawless.
Scoobyfreak86 Thats good to know. Probably just received a defective one. When the screen is on its not noticeable but when its off & i clean it, its quite annoying. Thanks!
So with the idoing headunit and play with the eq would it be justified to install the kickers?
Absolutely. Both made a big difference.
Did you order the idoing head unit with the base option or the Harmon karon option?
Base since I don’t have the hk
@@Autofreakgarage the harness for the kicker sub plugged in just fine to the idoing head unit?
Yes sir. Exactly like stock.
Do you know if the kicker subwoofer works on a 2020 base sti model? I purchased the tweeter and door speaker upgrade but not sure if the sub would work for a 2020 model. please help!
Yes, it works in all 2015+
@@Autofreakgarage awesome thanks man!
Where did you get these I am looking for my 2019 sti limited
Links in description under car stuff.
What year is your car ?
2017
I did the same man great vid, I have almost the same set up, I am looking to buy the kicker sub as well, I just had a quick question where did you end up placing the ground for the sub? Thanks in advance!
I think behind the headunit somewhere. I forget as it has been quite some time since I installed.
Scoobyfreak86 Gotcha I will pull it out & see where I can mount it, also sorry I had another question do you remember the harness part # I have a 17 STI as well and trying to make sure I buy the right harness I think the correct one is H630SFG810.
Time stamp: 15:23. Posted the part number.
Scoobyfreak86 Got it I fill bad not watching the video till the end, thanks again! Can’t wait to see the new wheels when they come in.
Will the harness fit my 2019 sti
Is the harness for the sub compatible with the idoing head unit
Yes plugs right in
Hey man, I am installing the iDoing head unit on my 2016 STI and can’t get the reverse cam to work. Any way I can contact you directly? I’m trying to trouble shoot it
You can contact me via Instagram. In the description.

Scoobyfreak86 please let me know if you see my message. It’s mpv314
@@mpv314 I had the same issue. Took me a couple days to figure it out. If you need help I can also help u. Insta @hunt46324
Do you have the oem reverse camera?
Hi friend,
Did you do a video on the actual speaker install?
I did not. I was still writing up journals on the forums when I did the speakers. forums.nasioc.com/forums/showpost.php?p=45611237&postcount=815
@@Autofreakgarage thanks for the reply. I'm struggling to find the OEM kicker door speakers.
I will keep hunting.
Also on the hunt for the OEM sub which is proving difficult also.
Thanks again.
Check the links in the description of my videos for both.
@@Autofreakgarage I did. Out of stock. The choice for upgrades here in the UK are poor and I need to pay expensive shipping costs from the US on most of the things I'm buying.
Did you need a wire harness for the sub, or was it included?
Yes I purchased it from Subaru
@@Autofreakgarage Thank you! I guess I can quick digging around in my dash for the right plug.
@@Autofreakgarage Thank you. Not sure why my reply was for my old account.
I put a 4 channel amp on my kicker upgrade speakers and they scream
Did you need any harness for the sub or its plug n play
Need the OEM Subaru harness but it’s plug and play. I showed a picture of it at the end of the video.
Scoobyfreak86 do you have the part number for it
Is the Starlink safety system affected when you change the HU?
Yes. Starlink is removed from the car.
@@Autofreakgarage honestly Starlink is the most useless piece of crap I've ever experienced.
@@Autofreakgarage honestly Starlink is the most useless piece of crap I've ever experienced.
Love that head unit
Hi thanks for the video .. does the sti Harmon kardon comes with the amp?
Yes the hk system comes with its own amp. This kit does not work with h/k.
@@Autofreakgarage thanks
@@Autofreakgarage you have a nice sounds system and nice head unit ..Most importantly nice car.. 1 silly question..You know the speaker cover on the door panel, let's say if we open the door in rain or 1 time I did use wet wipe to wipe it because my shoes have made it dirty .. when I wipe the water squeezed in the hole but not a lot or when it's raining. Will those get damage the speaker?
They are just covers. They aren’t the actual speakers.
@@Autofreakgarage I know I know but I mean will those water drops goes in do any damage?
Anyway you can link me some of the stuff ?
It’s all in the description below.
Hi, I just bought my car two days ago and saw this in the trunk. I am finding that it's got too much bass and am wondering how to turn the bass down. I'm not into a lot of base so I'm wondering if I should just have it taken off and have it sold. Are there any settings I can adjust to take the bass down or am I going to have to disconnect it? Thanks!
There is a wire harness you Can get that reduces the bass in this sub.
@@Autofreakgarage I'll look into that then, thanks for getting back to me.

Sold!! 👍👍
Enjoy! It’s a great upgrade.
Harmon Kardon system is rubbish anyway. My 17 Impreza premium stereo was better. Only good thing is the parcel shelf woofer
