BE is how the Chinese character for 'sadness' is pronounced. The girls make the shape of the character during the dance when they cross their arms above their heads and splay their fingers. The themes of the MV are obsessive love and, as in the Nightmare series, the dual nature of humanity being half angel and half demon. The mirrors represent that window between the two halves. When the window opens bad things happen. The imagery in the video was inspired by the American horror movie 'Us' in which a race of shape changers living under a quiet seaside resort town begin replacing the townsfolk with themselves.
I need to copy my interpretation as this is one of my Favorite M/V BEcause is a standalone track but it has some of the most complex visual references I have ever seen in an M/V and paired with its really creepy lyrics it is just a real masterpiece. Just a few things to point out: In the title "BE" as written by the Chinese character "悲“, means "sadness" so "BEcause I love you" means that the source of my sadness is that I love you. It is a song about obsessive love while the visuals are heavily inspired by the horror movie "US" by Jordan Peele where doppelgangers living underground take over the life of their counterparts. Many scenes from the movie were recreated in the M/V. Similar to the movie 'US' in BEcause the doppelgangers are like an obsessive Shadow side that craves love and a normal side (red represents the shadow side, blue represents the normal side while purple is an indication that these side live together, like the tapestry color change in the bridge section. 4:11 The hourglass starts the obsessive cycle 2:00 when the shadow side breaks 1:50 free (with a smirk) and starts corrupting the normal side 1:58 while eventually the obsessive side gets rejected and becomes the victim of itself and becomes the new normal side puppeteering the shadow side 4:42 hence the smirk and the laugh at the end of the video. And now the cycle can starts over... Some details I love are how in the lobby at the beginning the dresses of the people who will be taken over during the video are presented 2:18 Also the old electric chair used as a throne with roses is a nice one 3:15. Exactly half the scenes use wrong lighting setup enforcing the duality, just like all the mirror and upside down images. Finally plenty of images are exact recreations from the "US". Overall, I am also in love with BEcause M/V :) Stay the way you are like a beautiful painting is straight up reference to Good night, "like my very own doll" (one of their earlier song) . The doll you can technically interpret as a corpse, especially that right after the "take away the spilled paint before it hardens " is basically blood.... Similar to how Blue Blue your face turns blue is suffocation.

I'll give an interpretation with reference to their discography since there are several recurring themes. one recurring theme and I would say is their central theme is to be yourself regardless of external... or internal pressures. most people just interpret the song as being about obsessive love. however when you combine it with all the imagery of mirrors, duplicates, angelic/evil... it's more self reflective. "BE" is capitalized because it's the korean romanization of the chinese character for 'sadness'. so BEcause can be interpreted as the cause of sadness. your inner self, your dark half, is trying to sway you from inhibitions/guilt that can cause sadness. the imagery of your reflection in a broken mirror handing an apple to yourself describes the theme pretty well.

There actually are "cute" parts, but there also are parts where the guitars go full metal. The variations in BEcause remind me of their previous masterpiece, Deja Vu. The bridge with SuA's slow rap and Yoohyeon's backing vocals is possibly the most beautiful one they have ever done. About the meaning: According to Dami, BEcause is about love becoming obsession. And also, this is a stand-alone story. They go back to their horror roots, which I really enjoy. They noted that if you look at "BE" as a written Chinese character "悲“, that would mean "sadness". So the song title would mean "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to maybe mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". The video picks up on that. JiU seems to be the puppet master here (or her doppelganger!). She is the one trapping the other members and turning them into puppets, but Gahyeon tries to escape (as you can see by her throwing off the cage right in the beginning). It seems JiU catches her again though, "because she likes her". And I didn't even touch on the references to the movie "Us" yet, there is so much going on. The lyrics are even creepier. SuA sings: "Your face turns blue, blue. Your expression is like ocean view.", hinting at strangulation due to the one being obsessed taking things way, way too far. Dreamcatcher are clearly not afraid to tackle the difficult subjects, and they do it masterfully here - again. For me, this is more than just pop, it is art.

I would recommend the song "Red Sun". They have a special clip for it. It has gothic, witchy vibes. They also performed a slightly different version on a show called "Webtoon Singer" which I can also recommend (includes Handong).
Early in Dreamcatcher they went to an amusement park together and Handong had an experience on a ride called Disco Pang Pang that left her crying. Forward to filming a fear concept mv in a creepy abandoned amusement park and they filmed Handong on the Disco Pang Pang 3:45. She didn't have to act that day.

BEcause is meant to be summer song which in the Kpop industry, it is meant to be fun, cheery and bubbly .... unless the group is Dreamcatcher and it is their take on a "summer" song which is based on a Korean tradition where you tell ghost stories or visit haunted places so that you can feel the "chills" to fight the summer heat. As you would have known, officially the song unravels a story of an obsession and longing for love. The capitalise BE in the title is used in context as the Hanja character 悲’ (‘BE’) as they sound alike and the word meaning sadness, and the title BEcause could be loosely translate as the cause of sadness, and paired with the line BEcause I like you or BEcause I love you, the sadness is caused by liking or loving someone. Also, the whole creepy toxic vibe is link to the choreography where there is a scene of someone choking another, and the lyrics about "forever mine, even your breath" and then "your face blue...like an ocean view" kind of reflect someone being strangled until the fact turns blue etc. Also, the MV plot theme has another layer that officially borrowed quite a bit of plot elements from the horror movie "Us" by Jordan Peele where doppelgangers who were forced to live underground depraved of the "finer" things and are trying to are trying to take over their "privileged" above ground counterparts...won't go into much details as it would be better if you watch the movie yourself if you haven't). There are a lot of details in the MV that point to this such as the movie "Us" which has scenes depicting a hall of mirror, someone being captured and replaced, the carnival; similarly the choreography also uses the movie themes such as the doppelgangers holding hand in a chain, the slight side to side head tilts, ending pose of the center member which two hand on her face, mirrored choreography etc.. There are also a few easter eggs for the doppelgangers concept such as the MV is 3:13 minute long (coincidence to make it like a mirror but different? I think not) , and that the opening scene and ending scene has the members in completely different outfits (with the ending outfit more whimsical), as well as the completely drain symmetrical hourglass at the end indicating that at some point, the doppelgangers replaced their original counterpart. More impressively, musicality, it plays into the theme of opposite doppelgangers where there is a two part chorus (whimsical and cute, and a more rock follow up) and two part bridge (soft vocals followed up by a deep spoken rap with atmospherically vocals behind) trying to show this mirror duality. Also, I love the Pyscho volin homage during the rap part of the song.
