Straker in UFO and fascinated with the topic. This is the first time I see Mr Bishop himself. I am deeply moved! I have been an English teacher for over 40 years now and I am grateful to be able to understand what he said there, to hear his own voice. I recorded the rest of this interview on audiotape when it was live broadcast in Spring 1988.......ED talks about how he got the part of Straker after Captain Scarlet & the movie Doppleganger......He also talked about actors who were in the broadcast episode like Derren Nesbit and about the production switch between Boreham Wood MGM and PINEWOOD studios which was why actors like George Sewell & Gabrielle Drake left after the first 17 episodes.....He also talked about how in his opinion the 9 PINEWOOD episodes moved a lot FASTER .....He also went into why the show got cancelled because of trying to sell it in the American market.
He seemed like such a lovely guy and he was a brilliant actor. It's such a shame that the UFO series didn't continue. I loved Space: 1999 but wished the writing of that show was to the same exceptional quality as UFO. sadly it wasn't.
his acting got better and better...academy award for his final scene with the General in the moon rock episode...He uttered the same lines but in an alien induced trance...amazing presence and acting ability...the early scenes with the Mexican banditos is hilarious and brilliant too! As mentioned he ran like a deer in several scenes!
He was an actor like few others but it was a very interesting series and this actor was no longer seen but I would have liked to see him in other films, especially in space
If you watch the show closely - this guy could run like the WIND! I suspect his classmates in public school were very happy to help him practice this skill. . . . . ;) Really though, I felt he did some VERY fine acting in the show. I think it was a little "subtle" but strong just the same. Especially noteworthy, i.m.o., was his performance in "A Question of Priorities."
great characters, for me you remember as a kid when I saw the series and I was impressed by the noise of the UFOs that arrived. a light film without ever bloody scenes another way of putting yourself in front of the spectators another style without being gym would have deserved everyone more R.I.P.
His Captain Blue was my favorite character in Captain Scarlet. I was sorry to hear about his son's early death, and that Ed himself is no longer with us.
Doesn't seem like a complete interview, since they repeatedly refer to 'clearing up questions', and none of that clearing up is included here. I'd love to see the rest of that interview.
Never a good sign for an actor to be on one of these 'interviews', I'll explain, Up until the mid 80's, all UK television used to shut down around midnight, then commercial station, ITV, tried running programmes all through the night. Trouble was, no one watched and no one wanted to buy ads in the middle of the night. So, Meridian (SE England) and other ITV franchises, starting extending the continuity announcer sections and eventually brought them in front of the camera, as here. Back in those days, they'd interview anyone, not least because they may well be done live at 3 o' clock in the morning! I remember seeing Barbara Windsor being interviewed, after her career was going nowhere and she was on there plugging her small restaurant. Few years later, she got the EastEnders job and a second career in the business.
I like Ed Bishop he was marvellous in the TV episodes of UFO,
His voice never changed. You know it is him just by the voice alone. Wish he could have stuck around longer.
