Grew up with this show in the early 70’s and absolutely loved it, wish they’d made more of it. It had really strong female characters that weren’t overplayed as “strong female characters”. Great stuff.

    • @davidhoward4715

What the hell does _overplayed as “strong female characters"_ mean? Is this an incel thing?

    • @mikesaunders4694
      @mikesaunders4694 ปีที่แล้ว +34

@@davidhoward4715 mmmm I had to look up what “incel” actually meant and if you read what I actually wrote you’d see I’m hardly a young man. What it means is that a strongly written character is just that….doesn’t need to be gender specific…..or written in a way to make some point that often is out of keeping with the story. Does that answer your question?

Blame Lew Grade of every Jerry Anderson programme only having, at most, two series. I believe Space:1999 was in a large part based off the script for season two of UFO.

What a great piece of nostalgia. I remember watching UFO as a young boy having received the Dinky Shado Mobile and Interceptor toys, thinking wow is this what 1980 would look like as the year flashed up in the titles. Still can’t believe it’s 2023 as these were the futuristic years. The ladies still look great. Wanda probably had most young boy’s attention on screen! Always wondered what Alec Freeman actually did as he always seemed to stroll round with just chatting with Ed Straker. Great show well ahead of its time.

I consider UFO to be the best thing the Anderson's made. Especially "A Question of Priorities" (with all due respect to the late Fd Bishop).
For it's time, realistic and included some seriously adult themes.
And it never felt the need to brow beat the viewers with the societal changes it portrayed.
This is a superb look back at the show. 😁👍👏❤

I just love UFO! we had cable TV back in the 70's and this show came through the Los Angeles channel. I was glued to the TV every Saturday Night when UFO was on. It was Amazing Sci-Fi for its time and the Women are all just Gorgeous and amazing actors! The UFO women are true leaders, each of them were main cast characters and not just supporting cast sitting on standby next to the men.
We have to thank Sylvia Anderson (and Gerry) for their vision of the future and how these incredible ladies were portrayed with intelligence and strength while not minimizing their femininity- they were sexy and smart. I was too young to fully appreciate the adult relationship themes, but I do remember wow, these are all beautiful and smart ladies and they are in charge of the men lol. Yes, this show was ahead of it's time on so many levels. And have to mention the visual effects, the vehicles and the moon base. The production value was amazing! Then there was the hardware of which I won't go on at length, this is not that video but it was a major attraction. Gabrielle Drake is still a goddess in my heart, even more so after I discovered she had starred opposite the late, great novelist J.G. I wonder if it's just a bloke thing but 'Checking Boosters' will stay with me the rest of my days! I love this series, very much of it's time but I think that's one of it's many charms. Quite hard hitting stories, stealing human body parts for transplanting into aliens? Very dark and definitely not for kids, I was always surprised that they ran it in the afternoon through the seventies when I was 8, 9, 10 plus, pretty sure my parents weren't watching it with me. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson formed a very big part of my formative years, I am still very much immersed in all things sci-fi. Thanks for a great look at the superb female actors, very interesting to have their personal take on what it was like to film the series.

Add into this Star Trek and Dr Who and I was a pre-adolescent, sci-fi fiend. I loved the characters and the imaginings of how people may dress and interact in the future. What a great channel. Hot diggity!!! Now this is what I'm talking about! A great cast and not a dud in the bunch. All of them strong in their own ways. Personally I thought Lt. Barry, (Dolores Mantez), was the toughest of them all. I really enjoyed this. Thank you very much for posting.

It was such a leap forward, and a great time for actresses, who could really act like real women for once. The episode with Jane Merrow stays in my mind, and no wonder! I always wonder how she got home after leaving Straker, because her car was miles away in a ditch. I felt sorry for the man because I think she would he been good for him. She was attracted to him,and I reckon a relationship would have developed. God knows,he was lonely enough due to the job. Those girls are unforgettable. I have the complete series and have just watched it all recently. The last episode was The Long Sleep, ending with Ed and Virginia walking off into the distance. England was still very much old fashioned, and this adventure into the future strained the attitudes of the day. But it worked, that is for sure.

Growing up with UFO and Space:1999 was such a lucky break for my generation and began many of us on a journey into scientific and educational fields... including my own love and career with computers from Tandy in high school to the PC in my first career position in 1986. So lucky! 🙂

Que oportunidad maravillosa el poder verlas actualmente contando sus experiencias de época. Aun más ver las escenas en calidad óptima. En mi caso, hasta la década de 1990, nada más tenía la posibilidad de verlas en TV blanco y negro

Gerry and Sylvia were just the best at what they did and everyone looked fantastic. Only the cost prevented more episodes being made.derrick meddings was a genius of special effects.

I'm rewatching this series now and found this documentary! Great job on this! Very cool to see all the women of UFO talking about the series. It's too bad the series didn't last very long, I watched it early on in the 70's and have loved it ever since. The sound of the UFO was my favorite sound effect. It would be interesting to see it remade now as a series, as long as they don't screw it up! Gabrielle Drake is hot!

Interesting to see similarities between some the costumes in UFO and those worn by Alphans on Space 1999. The music at 26:28 also reminded me of ‘99.

    A lovely documentary celebrating UFO's women. 💖
🤔Have you done something similar for the guys? (I know some of them are no longer with us, but I am sure interviews could be found in the archives).🤔

The show was light years ahead of Star Trek. And watching it now the format it was shot on was superior too. The colors in UFO were outstanding.

Amazing stuff! I love how Jane bottoms the clutch whilst slamming on the brakes as she takes the Porsche into the weeds after 19:04 . Have to keep the mill running so she can back back out if the landing is ok.....top-shelf, that!

My three favorites were Wanda ( purple outfit ), Jane ( in the red dress ), and Georgina back then. 15-16 YO at the time. Now days it would likely be Wanda, Gabrielle, and Jane.

Gabrielle Drake was among the top ten most beautiful and sexy women I had ever seen as a young teenager, just so far beyond mere sexy she was a living pinup doll! Even today she's still near the top of my list!

This was wonderful! By strange coincidence this showed up for me. I had watched The Fog, the Ray Bradbury story done by the BBC. I immediately recognized Ed Bishop's voice. But he was not credited on the video anywhere, not even on IMDB. But it's him. So, somehow maybe the ALGO knew.
UFO was one of my favorite TV shows growing up that I never got to see enough of. In the States, we had it on probably Sunday nights like they scheduled Space:1999. Not a great time for young boys to enjoy sci-fi (and gorgeous girls!) when you had to go to bed early and wake up for school the next day.
