I actually really liked the Adric character. He was more competent than most companions. The acting was fine too. Even if the actor was one dimensional (not sure if he really was or not) and did not really adapt from his own personality it doesn't matter. As long as we only see one famous role and he fits the role it still works as well or better than even a very talented character actor might do. Still one of my favorite companions.

It's Moffat and especially a Moffat pre-showrunner. He is rude, frequently, and has a tone of arrogance. Same guy who went on record talking about how much of a "hack" Robert Holmes was and how he thought Doctor Who was a bit crap. Welcome to his opinions but given his career and again that tone, he doesn't come across well.

    • @Omnicient.

The 'he wasn't an actor' comment we could mirror with Moffatt 'being a writer' but it never stopped Moffatt! Tom Baker said many times in interviews that he never played The Doctor but instead played himself. Dr Who wasn't an actors series as such (I don't watch the new versions, as like most, I stopped watching British terrestrial drama tv years ago, and instead enjoy my firestick). Most of the time we had to use our imaginations to paper over what wasn't present but could have been present if the BBC didn't just see it as a kids programme and worse a programme outside primetime. We all have strong opinions but Moffatt doesn't seem to care how his comments would be taken by Matt. I notice that many writers and producers are overly opinionated and narcissistic and think their way is the only way but there's often a fundamental missing element in many arguments that often reside beneath surfaces; it's my opinion that 'something separate' feeds this attack on Adric and on Matt and see it in action now and again and often happens to young male performers; another example comes to mind is Sam Smith, who was also attacked; I don't mean in regards to sexuality (although for some that may be linked) but there's a core unconscious fear within those who attack who mask it with excuses as to why the character or actor didn't work. Adric was a great idea if it had been handled better by the production team; his age was similar to the age of many in the audience; if the series had been American they would have seen a massive plus factor which would and should have elevated the series and audience; again if handled well. In the early part of the above video Moffat's attack on 'boy geniuses' is an example of narrowed minded thinking, as well as other factors; such as I don't like 'boy geniuses' so I'm going to convince the audience and powers that be that they too don't like them but we only have to look at Harry Potter to see that audiences do like 'boy geniuses' in their billions. Be careful listening to the opinions of writers, or from anyone, as they will, more often than not, be fuelled by quite natural problems in their own psychologies.

You know, I thought Adric was alright in season 18.
Then in _Four to Doomsday_ somebody thought "he was an urchin once, so that's all that should define him" and he became a terrible companion. It was a terrible character expansion strategy because it countered any of the prior character development. While Adric did kind of recover after _Four to Doomsday_ he didn't recover quickly enough, and only became as likeable as he used to be by _Earthshock_

I liked Adric, and I liked Wesley Crusher, I never understood as I aged why people held contempt for them and then two older lesbians I overheard at a convention just plainly said, the only reason men don't like Wesley is jealousy, the character makes them feel inadequate and I think they were right. As young kids we are more easily inspired and are full of hope but for some as they age , not becoming a genius is a big source of insecurity. I am glad I never learned to think like that and that I have grown up quite comfortable with myself, perhaps it was because I had Adric and Wesley as role models where they had nobody.

He shouldn't have been a hated character. he was prideful with reason, everything he boasted he could back up. he was extremely smart, loyal and capable. He complained only when he had reason to; the doctor DID treat him with less respect than the others from the beginning to the end after all; and his death was absolutely tragic. I'm a 27 year old woman and I ugly cried when I saw Adric's death, and still tear up thinking of how his adventure is over and he never saw his potential. I believe Peter, who I love, is lying; I also believe Eric is lying; I think both wanted Adric to go in what is one of the worst choices the original series ever made; having two girls who don't really work well with the Doctor or the idea of new ideas and different kind of characters for the show stay while the one freshest to the premise of over 19 years go, the one who was the most realistic and most impressive. Sad. Davison just wanted a companion who wasn't as interesting as his Doctor and Adric was similar to his own Doctor so....and Saward never had Adric right as his time as script editor, turning him from season 18's bright, interested and questioning about the universes into someone who was always in trouble and less intelligent than Nyssa. Clearly they ruined the show with that move. And others they would soon make.
