I picked up a barrel from a metal scrapyard that had been made in to a burner it has a section angle grinded out in the bottom and a chimney welded near the top . It seems to be thicker metal than a normal oil drum which might last longer . Check local scrap metal yards they might have a more stronger barrel . Good video . Proves the paint can withstand the heat

I would have let the primer fully cure first, then coat the barrel with fire-resistant paint next, and let that cure for whatever the product says it takes before starting the next barrel burn.
That smoke or vapor coming off the barrel was likely the newly coated paint volatilizing.

Great video. I did the the same as you. I'm getting a new barrel next weekend. I'll do similar to last time, except this time I'll do the same to the inside. Just to see if it makes a difference. Thanks again for the video. I should add, mine is left out in the elements all year with no cover. So I can't complain.

Doing the inside I think will make it last longer. The one I did in the video is rusting out from the inside. Amazing how fast they will rust if left out in the elements. But I can tell you to make sure you get a good coat of paint on the barrel. Couple of spots I had it too thin and started to peel after some time…..or I didn’t get all the oil off in those spots.

If you just want it to be black, can't you just brush off the rust wth a wire brush and "season" the barrel with some oil before you use it, like you would with a cast iron pan? You could even use the oily rag or paper towels to start the fire.

Good video. Today is Jan1,2024....is the barrel still alive, had did the paint job hold out?

The paint still looks good but is rusting from the inside out. Need to make me another one and figure out a lid to keep it dry on the inside. Those things will rust out quick.

Why torch the original paint if you're gonna sand anyway?

Also, is the paint the same brand as the primer, and how has it lasted through the season?

The original paint was the paint that was used for appearance while being used to ship whatever was shipped in them, not to burn in. So it wasn't high heat paint. The paint he used is supposed to withstand the head and not burn off

I believe the original paint would've blistered off with the next barrel burn even with the fire-resistant paint on top of it, so you'd have to paint the barrel again.
