Hey guys! In case it wasn't clear in the video: I love Mormons. I have made numerous videos about the LDS faith, and I am very clear about my fondness for them, even though I have sharp theological disagreements with them. The missionaries and I left on very friendly terms. I think some people think I should have just sat and listened to their perspective without challenging them, but that's why I went: to challenge them with the Biblical Gospel and ask thought provoking questions because of these differences. I find I always get very mixed responses on these types of videos, no matter how I approach it. That's okay. Not everyone has to agree. 🙂 However, though I don't regret being straightforward in this video, I do think there's a learning opportunity on my part to convey these experiences more effectively with my tone and demeanor. Here's quick access to some of the resources I mentioned in the video: Evidence Ministries: www.youtube.com/@EvidenceMinistries/videos Interview with Micah Wilder, former LDS: th-cam.com/video/a686EkPTP6M/w-d-xo.html Aaron Shafovaloff: www.youtube.com/@AaronShafovaloff1
Gosh I really love to listen to Melissa Dougherty speak. You are so skilled at speaking and you always seem to know the subject material fairly well. Many of us Catholics are waiting for you to do a presentation on our Most Holy Catholic Faith. I get the drift from many of the Catholics that make comments on your videos that we all feel that you are a person of integrity and that you have a great desire for getting at the Truth. There are many videos made of Catholicism from people that are outside of the Church and they are very careless in their approach to making Catholicism understood. To be honest, I have not seen one single presentation made by a non-Catholic that was not full of errors. We pray that you don't let us down. With that being said, you correctly state that the Mormons practice a "fake communion" because they use regular bread and water in their communion service. This seems to indicate to me that you believe that most other mainline denominations have legitimate communion services. Well NEWSFLASH MD...........all communion services done outside of the Catholic Church are "fake communions". Holy Communion is the sole purpose for the Incarnation of God, and for His Passion, Death and Resurrection. I hope that you, Melissa Dougherty, will conduct a sincere study on Holy Communion before you present your video to us. Only God can build His One Church, and in that One Church you will encounter Christ in the Supper of the Lamb, where the Bridegroom becomes One Flesh with His Bride. That is what unites us, just as you are united to your own parents by flesh and blood, so too in Holy Communion we enter into union with Christ - Flesh to flesh. That is authentic Communion, and can never be duplicated outside of the Catholic Church. Counterfeit communions are not life giving, therefore, Heaven will not be the destination for anyone that partakes of a fake communion. Jesus emphatically taught that we must eat His Flesh to receive eternal life, for He is the Bread that came down from Heaven. For He is the Lamb of God, sacrificed upon the Altar of the Cross, and made Present at each and every Mass so that we can know Him intimately, as a Bridegroom comes to know His Bride, uniting Flesh to flesh. I highly recommend that you study Brandt Pitre's book, "Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist: Unlocking the Secrets of the Last Supper" if you want to get this right. May God Bless you immensely as you journey along your own Road to Emmaus.
To be fair, I was probably mispronouncing Aaron's name for at least a year even while we were a part of the same church and interacting regularly, ha ha!
Thank you for this video, sis. I was raised JW. Never knew much about the Mormons. I am surprised to hear how many similarities in certain terms and beliefs. Now born again and saved by grace through thru faith in my Lord Jesus. Amazing how much more I have learned in the Bible alone, than the countless magazines and brochures which mis quote and take out of context. As the word says, God is not the author of confusion. Hallelujah!
We are nothing like the JW's and don't have many similar beliefs. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is God's and Jesus Christ one and only true church here on earth. @@johnmontoya2479 Sure, except we didn't change or make a new Bible to fix our beliefs. Most of our beliefs can be supported or is hinted at in the Bible. The Book of Mormon add some additional knowledge that isn't in the Bible but is the word of God. Same thing with the Doctrine and Covenants.
@Dylan Williams 2 Timothy 3:14-17 [14]But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, [15]and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. I'm ex-mormon, born and raised. Left in my early 30's, 12 years ago. It took me a LONG time to understand the true gospel and what true Christianity is and undo all the incorrect teachings I had all my life. However, I am so VERY grateful for youtube channels like yours, Melissa, and others (Mike Winger, Apologia, Alisa Childers, etc.) that were so helpful in teaching me the correct gospel and help me along my path. If you ever want to talk about the church and more of their incorrect doctrines, I would love to chat with you.
Joseph Smith was a 32nd degree Mason. When I went through the temple and saw all the Masonic symbols on my new underwear, on the priests’ aprons, and all over the Salt Lake temple, I was mortified. There is so much Masonry in Mormonism. Very dark.
I know somewhat how you feel how hard it can be leaving a church as I did the Roman Catholic church 3 years ago. I'm 60 and sometimes it's still hard. It's even harder because there are so many protestant churches! I try to avoid churches with women pastors, LGBTQ flags, or CRT or social Justice teachings.
@@KM-zn3lx the prosperity message is very offensive to me. name it and claim it in the name of jesus. i personally like my catholic friends. i wanted to be an outreach to them and i prayed to god about it. god told me i could meet with them if i showed proper respect. i don't expect an ex-catholic to agree with me and i don't expect most protestant churches to agree with me. but i feel that i or anyone can be an ambassador for jesus to catholics by his actions. in the case of catholics that i know this is a very hard thing to expect, because most of them are very good people.
I just left the Mormon church at the end of last year. I remember back when I was a missionary 11 years ago and christians would witness to me. I never took them seriously, but some of the words they shared stuck with me all these years until now when I was ready to leave in search of the true Christ. Keep up the good work!

This makes me so happy to hear. I have been inviting the missionaries over for the past few years, hoping to plant some seeds. I just had two new missionaries over yesterday and we had some great conversation.
The fact that you asked questions about their own religion that they themselves couldn’t answer, tells me that there was a seed planted. I love your boldness and thank you for allowing the Holy Spirit to use you.
Anytime you get a Mormon missionary to start wildly bearing their testimony without reason, you've chiseled through that heart of stone a little deeper.
God directs our path for sure. My son was raised in the Southern Baptist Church. About 11 yrs ago, he converted to LDS. He is now married & sealed, and has 2 children. I pray everyday that he will return to the faith of his childhood and for the salvation of his wife and my 2 grand babies.
Don't worry! Your child is being held in God's hands and he and his family will receive salvation. You have been misinformed if you think the L.D.S. church will harm he and his family in some way. I'm willing to bet that your son and his family are loving and happy
"When your authority is your heart, you will change reality and the Bible to agree with your heart." Such a powerful truth. And sadly, it applies not only to Mormons but to many others who interpret Scripture according to their feelings and pursue spiritual/emotional experiences in order to "feel God's presence". 💔 😢🙏
Scripture doesn't have an authority beyond your private interpretation. It will always be mediated by your private interpretation which is always subject to being flawed.
@@criticaloptimist7961 " Scripture doesn't have an authority beyond your private interpretation. " Incorrect. There is only one truth. 2 Peter 1:20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture becomes a matter of someone’s own interpretation,
@@rickdavis2235 my point is that whatever authority the scripture has, it is still mediated by an interpretation that is subject to err, which point is underscored by the passage you cited. So when anyone appeals to scripture to support their thesis they are merely appealing to their own interpretation and understanding that may or may not match the "Truth". So appealing to scripture is always as through a veil. Also, 2 Peter is a forged letter, so at the end of the day does this passage really help us get to the Truth? For that matter, how do we know the Bible is the inspired word of God in all it's parts, or even at all to begin with? Because unless we can be sure of that first, it is pointless to speak of it as an authority.
@@criticaloptimist7961 scripture interprets scripture. If you're believing something that doesn't reconcile with scripture, then it's not the book that's wrong, it's your interpretation. Scripture are the bumpers on the sides of the bowling alley that keep you from going into the gutter. There's a little room between the bumpers that you can move freely on, but you can't go into the gutter. The better we understand scripture, the tighter together those bumpers become and the more straight we walk along the path.
@@BrendonKing No, you interpret scripture. I agree in principle the better you understand something the easier it is to navigate confusion. But how do you know the Bible interprets itself? How do you know it doesnt just loosely fit together? If you follow that hermeneutical paradigm, how would you ever discern whether something in it isn't right? You a priori determined the Bible is inerrant, so no matter what you read you will make it fit, no matter what kind of mental gymnastics that requires. Again, how do you know the Bible is inerrant?
I get it, they no longer like the word "Mormon" (which is silly since its the title of their main book of doctrine, but whatever). But now we can't say "LDS"? I'm sorry, they have to come up with a shorter term than "Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" because ain't nobody got time for that.
I didn't mention it in the video, but at least five or six times... Possibly more... during the visit with the missionaries, Elder "Senior" interrupted to correct me to tell me to say, "Members of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints" instead of LDS or Mormon. I was like... Nah.
@@MelissaDougherty ummm… isn’t the Body of Christ the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints??? if I were to refer to anyone as that, it would only be to a real genuine Christian
I love this! I have been meeting with some mormon missionaries, and I have such a heart for them. I also have learned that it is my job to plant seeds, not necessarily to stay with them to the harvest. I've also learned to drench them in prayer. The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, only by the movement of the Spirit will their hearts be opened and the eternity placed there be open for the truth their spirits' crave.

I really enjoyed watching this post, but found it a little hard to reconcile. I am what is commonly called a 'Inactive' Mormon, not an 'Ex-Mormon'. I have not actively participated in the LDS Church since college, almost 30yrs ago. Now that I have a 12yo daughter, my wife (Inactive Catholic) and I are having conversations about church more often. Growing up in the LDS Church, there was always more Bible study than Book of Mormon and/or Doctrine and Covenants. Recently went to Salt Lake City for volleyball tournament and after the morning games, did a temple visit. It had been 15yrs since last in SLC. While walking the grounds, 2 Missionaries introduced themselves and we started to talk about church, growing up LDS, being inactive, catholic spouse, and what church to raise my daughter in. The only scriptures shared were from the bible. There are plenty of questions about many different denominations and what church is best for you. My experience with LDS has always been Jesus is the Savior and died on the cross for all our sins. Hence why every Mormon payer ends with 'in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen'
As a former Catholic myself--got kicked out of Madonna Academy and the church at 14/15 over disagreements about what the Bible teaches--I spent seven years visiting every church I could find until one actually resonated with my personal experience with God. That was in 1975 and I've never looked back.
each year, the Mormon church classrooms rotate their teachings between the bible, book of mormon, and doctrine and covenants. It just depends what year it is. Also, the missionaries probably only shared bible verses to fight off the stereotype that Mormons aren't real Christians. It's just a manipulation tactic.
Joseph Smith didn't restore anything. He just made his own version of Christianity and created another gospel and a different Jesus that leaves people empty and in bondage to a man made religion. - nailed it
I was raised Mormon and am now Protestant Christian. I left the Mormon church for theological reasons. But I did (and sometimes still do) miss the feeling of community. Because you have the same people at the same service every week, you get to know people better. It has taken me 3 years to finally feel part of my new church community because it was so hard to get to know people in the church when you don't see the same people from week to week. You don't have that in the Mormon faith, which I think is one reason some people stay there (even when they start to question the theology). I've known a fair number of Mormons who aren't quite onboard with the theology anymore but like the sense of community.
@LydiaCS yes, Lydia, as a single person in many modern churches it is hard to make community like that. I always try to serve somewhere in church, and join a small group. I personally prefer family groups, because I don't necessarily want to hang out with other singles all the time. May your growth be blessed!
Former definitely sounds better. That 💯 thing though is disingenuous. She's not perfect and she's definitely not perfectly right about anything, I don't care what is. No one should ever trust or affirm someone especially by saying they're 💯% right on anything. That's not a disciples meek view that's more a cultic mentality. Joining one church and than leaving it now might make a little more sense. Just perspective.

@@dylanwilliams2202 I really can't agree that the church teaches the Bible better than any denomination. There's many Christian churches that got that locked down. The church at its best though is great at converting and committing people to Christ. It has flaws as do other churches.
I was in Japan for business about 30 years ago. I was weary of having to communicate mostly in Nihongo, and was actually happy to be able to speak with two Mormon missionaries in a McDonalds. I told them that I am Pentecostal and we shared a couple of burgers. We had a pleasant conversation talking about home in the US and we talked little about differences in our beliefs. I think that we all enjoyed fellowship in our native tongue , being mostly homesick and missing our families. Personally I have had more disagreements in theology with my Catholic friends that insist that the path of Salvation is by Works and not Grace.
I was practicing mormon for 28 years. I'm not sure where you got the idea that salvation is by grace, rather than by works, in Mormonism? In Mormonism, there's an imaginary bucket of "good works" that you need to fill, in order to achieve the highest kingdom in heaven. (Along with a checklist of temple ordinances that must be performed in order to be eligible for a "ticket" to that highest kingdom...and in order to be eligible for a "ticket" to the temple, you need to regularly contribute your 10% tithe to the $150+ billion Mormon coffer.) Yes, you are to regularly utilize God's grace and forgiveness (via the Atonement) to aid in your climb toward salvation, but you have to put in the work--an enigmatic, nebulous amount of work. You never know if you're good enough, or what "tier" you're currently at. There's Celestial, Terestial, Telestial kingdoms in heaven, then "outer darkness". At any given point, your righteousness level is at one of those 4 places. And you're always hoping that you're at the top one. This uncertainty can lead to a lot of anxiety over your ability to follow a righteous path, and a lot of spite and judgment towards those that don't follow that path, especially fellow members.
I lived in Japan years ago and I was visiting a friend in the country. When I say county in Japan I mean the trains only ran every 30 minutes. I run Mormon missionaries in the middle of boondock Japan lol.

You Go Girl!! I believe you were completely respectful in showing the two (younger) "elders" that there is more to think about than unquestioning following their church. I have been witnessing to a Mormon boss for going on 20 years. He comes from a third generation LDS family, been on two missions. Yet, when he sees that God is blessing me and my family but not so much his, he has more than a few questions how God blesses an apostate believer in Jesus Christ alone, "but not his people chosen to get Joseph's message". Aaron Shafovaloff, is absolutely fabulous in the message he puts out there, as are MRM ministries, Sandra Tanner, Mormon Coffee blog and others... I thank my boss for turning me on to (indirectly without his knowledge of course) these great respectful ministries with the LDS people in mind. First and foremost, when we witness to our Mormon friends, and the (younger) "elders" who come knocking on our doors. @@christincommon5496 If you watched Melissa's video, she talks about how unbelievers do good things too but that won't save them. The fact that they went into Mormonism from Christianity means they didn't really know the Bible because Mormonism contradicts the Bible. I set out to read the Bible from front to back and I retained very little but when I began to study it in depth, I began to see how little I understood it from just reading it. We have a weekly, ongoing bible study at our church that we started in January with the Gospel of John and we're just now starting chapter 6. Is a Bible study possible with them?
My Pentecostal church doesn't use wine, we use grape juice. I have to admit I'm grateful for that because I am majorly allergic to wine! As for crying, a lot of people cry when sharing religious experiences with a friend, like having a prayer answered, or feeling that God has looked out for them or for family... friends. I also think the heart of the law is more important than the letter of the law. Things I think are weird about some of my fellow Christians is that they go to church wearing overly casual & often even immodest clothes. Interesting that they'll get all dressed up when going to a job interview, but considering all that God has done for us, and how much he loves us, we can't even show respect? I'll be forever scratching my head on that one! And no, I'm not talking about super fancy expensive clothes or shoes!

Protestant Christians misunderstand the LDS doctrine of faith with works. Mormons know that they can't earn their way to heaven and it's only through faith in Christ that we can be saved. The "works" part of the equation is that if you have faith in Christ, you naturally begin to emulate Him by doing good works. Service is a natural outgrowth of faith. If you don't "do works" or serve your fellow man, then your faith is dead and you're only left with belief.
Works like repentance are mandatory because they are commandments. Jesus never had to repent, so, when you repent, you don't emulate Him, you are Obedient to the command; and for obedience you are blessed, and for disobedience ~ you better repent.
I truly respect your boldness and think you are doing a great job for the Lord. I left my last church because they had a creed they would say that bothered me greatly but because they took me in and I was desperate for fellowship I gritted my teeth and tried to stay but I was vexed by it. I won't quote the entire thing but the main part that got to me was "we take the Bible seriously but know it needs reinterpretation for our time" It was United so they had the flag up also. I left but didn't do what I wanted to do and challenge if anyone could quote the gospel chapter and verse and see how many could tell me 1st Corinthians 15:1-4. I just realized that my Catholic upbringing taught me the original version of "Jesus and the Word PLUS". In fact, the pope said that it was dangerous for anyone to think that they could have a personal relationship with Jesus without the intervention of the sacraments and the church. That may not be an exact quote but that was the essence of what he said. And as you said, holding salvation hostage.
To: @Gary Slavinsky Re: holding salvation hostage. Jesus and the Word PLUS obeying the word and living the word does not hold salvation hostage ~ not doing the things that Christ asks you to do makes you a hostage of sin ~ the sin of omission ~ the sin of disobedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel The true gospel is, among other things, the gospel of scripture, listening to the Holy Spirit, receiving revelation, the gospel of grace, having mercy on others, performing miracles, blessing and caring for others, of doing good, of doing your duty towards God and man, forgiving others and yourself, repenting of your sins, the gospel of faith, being patient, of enduring to the end, of obedience and sacrifice, of learning, of becoming more Christ-like, day by day, by following the example of Christ, and in short it is the gospel of living by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God with faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Praise Jesus. The Church of Jesus Christ teaches that all religions have a portion of the truth. The Catholics were not wrong about everything. In this case, your upbringing was good to go. I am sure that they taught you many other important truths. .
Kevin Barney's article, "Examining six key concepts in Joseph Smith's understanding of Gen. 1:1" shows how many of the things revealed by Joseph Smith have now become the dominant consensus of mainstream Bible scholars on what the Bible teaches.
Your analogy of the imitation crab resonated with me. Whenever I go to a sushi restaurant and the menu says the roll has crab in it, I always have to ask if it’s real crab or that imitation crab mix. Another metaphor which may or may not help some people is that of the yellow brick road in the Wizard of Oz. When I took ERT (emergency response team) training at my old company, the course instructor emphasized the importance of ‘staying on the yellow brick road’. They shared how in the movie, if you notice, Dorothy and her friends always got into trouble when they strayed off the yellow brick road. I feel it’s similar with the Bible, the more we stick to what the Bible teaches, the less chance of us getting swayed by new teachings or leaders with clever words that tell you not to trust the Bible.

I appreciate how respectful you are to others who share opposing views. As Christians we need to remind ourselves of this as we can get defensive quickly ourselves.
I don't really see that. There's no indication that opposing views are welcome to speak and discuss here. If someone says they're an Ex this or that they get praise and if someone says a nice comment in line with her then they're welcome but I don't actually much disagreeing discussion taking place or welcomed. Not yet at least.

To: @Unpopular Opinions: thank you for your kind words, nevertheless, The true beliefs and a real picture of the Church of Jesus Christ are not given in this video. 4-example: We are asked to read all scriptures once a yr every yr including the Old and New Testaments. Elders have a list of scriptures to memorize ~ the Bible list just as long as the others. Sunday School from Nursery to Adult are on a 4yr schedule and the Old and New Testaments get 1yr of intensive study, exactly as the others. Our "sharper" missionaries should at least be familiar with anything you want to talk about, but alas & hallelujah it is a lay clergy.

In the testinony of the eight witnesses Joseph showed them the plates, they handled the plates and "hefted" them. The three witnesses' testimony was more spiritual in nature (an angel showed them the plates and they heard the voice of God telling them to bear witness) which is the one I think you're referencing, but even they said they saw with their eyes. Not their "minds eye" as you said
When I was having doubts about the teachings of the church (LDS) I tried to reconcile things and eventually asked my Dad what should I do. I didn't want to leave! But staying would have made me a hypocrite. I remember him telling me that "Doing the right thing doesn't always feel good". Best advice I ever had. I left and never went back. But I did come to the biblical Jesus later on. Thank the Lord, He was waiting patiently for me to open that door.
In the church we’ve noticed this and have started making changes in this. We have a new program where yearly we focus on one set of scripture, last year was the Old Testament and this year is the new. We consider the Book of Mormon to be the keystone of our religion, another testament of Jesus Christ, and so yes, we do tend to focus on that quite a bit, but that doesn’t mean we ignore the Bible, too.
The Holy Grail is the cup that Jesus drank *wine* out of at the Last Supper. 😅 You were truly called to do this work. I have Mormon family members, and while they're the kindest people, it breaks my heart that they work so hard when the true work of salvation has already been done.
To: @SusieQ ... There is no such thing as a holy grail....... And the Bible is not a church manual. It describes the passing of the sacrament, but not in detail and does not give instruction on how it is done. That's speculation. Your family might be working hard but they are not working hard for forgiveness of sins. Forgiveness of sins comes from repentance.
Oh Melissa, you speak so well, thank you. Whenever I visit my sister in Germany I ask the Lord for opportunities to witness to her. But the deception is so deep inside her head, so hard, so arrogant. No question on her part yet. But I trust the Lord. I continue to write to her, with great care and trusting the Lord to give me the words she needs to read. I look forward to the day when we can adore our Savior Jesus Christ without reservation, without 'yes, but'.
I just got back from my Mormon grandmothers funeral. My very Mormon family has never made a point about what to call them and call themselves both Mormon and LDS. Have you ever gone to a ward on testimony Sunday?
I am amazed at the efforts people go put down the Church. They get all caught up in exactly how many times Jesus name was mentioned in Sacrament talks as a way of determining where the Church is focused and if it is not enough times then its their excuse to run off to another place, and then here you are mocking the Church by refusing to use its proper name. The emphasis on using the proper name of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day Saints, it to put more emphasis on Jesus and His life and atonement. How many other Christian religions out there have the name of Jesus Christ in their title. Maybe if they do not then they cannot really be serious about having him in their life so maybe I will just go find a church that does.
@@donnathompson679 or perhaps you doth protest too much? You are the one focusing on look here is Jesus’s name! Look look how can you say these things don’t you see the name on our church? I reject your church as the true church because I reject Joseph Smith as a prophet. I find all forms of restoration theology ( the idea that the plan and simple truths of the gospel were somehow lost and must be restored by Devine revelation ) repugnant. I have very good relationships with my Latter Day Saint family members. ( my father was excommunicated when I was very young. I and my mother where never part of the church.) never once have they made a big deal about what they are called. It isn’t meant to be a put down. It’s ease of communication. Plus the church Joseph Smith founded has changed names multiple times in history.
Out of all the choices I have made in my life, two that I chose against and am so grateful for were smoking and the Mormon religion. I was close to the second, within a week of baptism.
I'm lifelong LDS. Maybe someone already said this, Joseph Smith did NOT write the Book of Mormon. he TRANSLATED it. And just like the Bible, it is composed of many different prophets who lived over centuries. It makes sense to me that he would send his word to the whole world, regardless of where they live or when. The Book of Mormon is a support to the Bible. It serves as a testament of Jesus Christ, a second witness of Jesus as our Savior and redeemer. It's on the title page. It does not present itself as "bible Plus". It presents itself as a support to and verification of the gospel as presented by Jesus Christ IN THE BIBLE. And we do read the bible. As a church, we rotate the focus of our scriptures study over a 4 year period. So every 1 in 4 years we focus on the new testament. Every 1 in four years we focus on the Old Testament. The other two years we focus on the Book of Mormon and more modern-day revelation. Of course, nothing stops an individual member from devising their own system of scripture study. But the church does provide this framework to assist members in organizing and focusing their studies over time. I absolutely love your attempt to understand various religions. But I think visiting three times over the course of ten years may not qualify any one person to present a religion to others. There are bound to be misunderstandings and misrepresentations with so little contact and study.
i’m not going to lie i’m a member of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints and i loved this video. thank you for coming from a genuine place!
“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn-not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son. John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’” From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us. This was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistants from Jerusalem to ask John, “Who are you?” He came right out and said, “I am not the Messiah.” “Well then, who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?” “No,” he replied. “Are you the Prophet we are expecting?” “No.” “Then who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?” John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah: “I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Clear the way for the Lord’s coming!’” Then the Pharisees who had been sent asked him, “If you aren’t the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?” John told them, “I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. Though his ministry follows mine, I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal.” This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing. The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’ I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.” Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him. I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.”” John 1:1-34 NLT bible.com/bible/116/jhn.1.1-34.NLT
"Witnessing" to Mormons is always so formulaic. I grew up in the Bible Belt as a (still) active member of the Church of Christ, and I've heard all of these claims all my life, ad nauseum. It's like you've simply memorized a script, and are taught not to challenge or think any deeper than that one script. I've already thought pretty deeply on these criticisms, and it's all meaningless, contradictory, confused, fails basic logic, ignorant of LDS theology, or outright fabrications. Good works are a (1) necessary condition, (2) not a sufficient condition, of our salvation. They are necessary because of God's covenant relationship with his people--those who enter in on the Gospel path of faith, repentance, baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost. Good works are NOT necessary because it is possible for works to bridge the gap between God's perfection and our sinfulness. That's not what good works do. But, having a willing heart to do the works of Christ makes it possible for HIS power to change us for the better. And we "show our faith by our works," as James 2:18 says The reason claiming "works doesn't save you" ACTUALLY DOESN'T excuse you from ordinances such as baptism and Communion is simply that doing that very short, relatively easy list of things (and it goes without saying) is NOT EVEN CLOSE to saying that one must never sin to be saved. And, in fact, Communion ("the sacrament," in LDS lingo) essentially publicly proclaims that you're NOT saved by works, on a weekly basis!!! As Jesus said: "If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself" (John 7:17). That's the promise to those who do good.
No that is a promise to those who do His will. John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day. See also Romans 3:10-18
I worked for years with a LDS radiologist. I kept in touch for years thinking we were friends. Shame on me. I never realized the true contempt he held for me, a Christian man, having rejected his attempts at proselytizing.
I'm a former Mormon and I agree your Co worker may have been disappointed but I think he was your friend. Mormons don't fake friendship but yes he would have hoped you would convert. While I have my issues with the church, I think the people are for the most part really genuine.
I worked at a Mormon-owned company, and the way they treated non-Mormon employees worse than the Mormon employees, all while putting on the “I am so good, watch me as I “work” my way to heaven was quite appalling. I also find it so hypocritical of them that they were not to drink anything with caffeine, coffee, tea, etc., all while drinking Mountain Dew, coke (that one I get, because the Mormons owe stock in Coca Cola.
Melissa, this is pretty sad. All I saw and heard here were smirks and an unusual level of arrogance. It appears you feel you've given a successful review of a church to your subscribers by sharing a conversation you had with a 19 year old boy that somehow can't answer all your questions. You then make light of the individual for sharing a testimony of what he believes and then claim that he demanded you "submit" to it? I have my doubts. I'll need to see the tape on that one because it doesn't align with anything I've ever witnessed. In all, it's clearly not an honest assessment and it's tainted by an apparent 'go-to' move of reducing everything to just 'feelings'. I also found it interesting that one of the core complaints is "Mormons don't read the Bible enough" while simultaneously saying "It doesn't impress me when Mormons quote (read!) the Bible" (5:40). Where's the logic? Again, just not an honest assessment and that's unfortunate to your followers here. I'd challenge you to find someone in the building that's a little more experienced and sit down and record your conversation for us. I'd love to hear *that* conversation over a re-telling of a time you dunked on a 19 year old boy that believed enough in his message to leave his home and family for two years to tell people about it. I cringe a little to think of the kind of reviews you've given other church's. Maybe I misinterpreted the goal here though.

"When your authority is your heart, you will change reality and the Bible to agree with your heart." Such a powerful truth. And sadly, it applies not only to Mormons but to many others who interpret Scripture according to their feelings and pursue spiritual/emotional experiences in order to "feel God's presence". 💔 😢🙏

" Scripture doesn't have an authority beyond your private interpretation. "
Incorrect. There is only one truth.
2 Peter 1:20
But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture becomes a matter of someone’s own interpretation,
@@rickdavis2235 my point is that whatever authority the scripture has, it is still mediated by an interpretation that is subject to err, which point is underscored by the passage you cited.

I've been wandering and attempting to recommit to faith. Thank you for your words. Truth is true, always.
Excellent job, Melissa! Blessings
Joseph Smith didn't restore anything. He just made his own version of Christianity and created another gospel and a different Jesus that leaves people empty and in bondage to a man made religion. - nailed it

Great info in a great explanatory way, nailing it to the wall like a great picture.
The idea of the times aligning with neighborhoods is actually a nice way to develop a church community.
@@lydiacs7789 I completely concur with your feelings.
And I agree with PianoGal's advice to get involved with a small group or service project at church to get to know others better.
As a former Mormon and born-again Christian, you got everything right. 💯 keep up the good work! God bless! ❤🙏😊

Great job, Melissa. Thanks so much.
As do Mormons, if not more so.
I was practicing mormon for 28 years. I'm not sure where you got the idea that salvation is by grace, rather than by works, in Mormonism? In Mormonism, there's an imaginary bucket of "good works" that you need to fill, in order to achieve the highest kingdom in heaven. (Along with a checklist of temple ordinances that must be performed in order to be eligible for a "ticket" to that highest kingdom...and in order to be eligible for a "ticket" to the temple, you need to regularly contribute your 10% tithe to the $150+ billion Mormon coffer.)
Yes, you are to regularly utilize God's grace and forgiveness (via the Atonement) to aid in your climb toward salvation, but you have to put in the work--an enigmatic, nebulous amount of work.

I've honestly never, ever heard someone have a problem with taking communion that isn't "unleavened bread and wine"... I've never even had communion with those things...

Unleavened bread makes sense in light of Passover.

We must treat them with the same dignity and respect that the Jesus Christ we represent would reach out to them with. My Jesus would reach out to them in love just like he did to me before I knew him!

If you watched Melissa's video, she talks about how unbelievers do good things too but that won't save them. The fact that they went into Mormonism from Christianity means they didn't really know the Bible because Mormonism contradicts the Bible.
Usually when people tell me they've read the Bible, they mean they read verses that support their beliefs and have not studied it. I set out to read the Bible from front to back and I retained very little but when I began to study it in depth, I began to see how little I understood it from just reading it.

I can't wait for you to dive deep into the Catholic religion. I am very interested in hearing about that from you. ☺️ Great work on this topic!

@@dylanwilliams2202 Good for you. How many times did you cut and paste that now?
Extremely informative video! Thank you.
I truly respect your boldness and think you are doing a great job for the Lord. I left my last church because they had a creed they would say that bothered me greatly but because they took me in and I was desperate for fellowship I gritted my teeth and tried to stay but I was vexed by it. 2 For, behold, I say unto you, that it mattereth not what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink when ye partake of the sacrament, if it so be that ye do it with an eye single to my glory-remembering unto the Father my body which was laid down for you, and my blood which was shed for the remission of your sins.
3 Wherefore, a commandment I give unto you, that you shall not purchase wine neither strong drink of your enemies;
4 Wherefore, you shall partake of none except it is made anew among you; yea, in this my Father’s kingdom which shall be built up on the earth.

To: @Gary Slavinsky
Re: holding salvation hostage.
Jesus and the Word PLUS obeying the word and living the word does not hold salvation hostage ~ not doing the things that Christ asks you to do makes you a hostage of sin ~ the sin of omission ~ the sin of disobedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel
The true gospel is, among other things, the gospel of scripture, listening to the Holy Spirit, receiving revelation, the gospel of grace, having mercy on others, performing miracles, blessing and caring for others, of doing good, of doing your duty towards God and man, forgiving others and yourself, repenting of your sins, the gospel of faith, being patient, of enduring to the end, of obedience and sacrifice, of learning, of becoming more Christ-like, day by day, by following the example of Christ, and in short it is the gospel of living by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God with faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Praise Jesus.
The Church of Jesus Christ teaches that all religions have a portion of the truth.
The Catholics were not wrong about everything.
In this case, your upbringing was good to go.
I am sure that they taught you many other important truths.

So true about Mormons knowing their own scriptures much better than the WORD! My Mormon sister didn't know about Proverbs 31 for starters
Great conversation!

Great stuff Thank You !
Out of all the choices I have made in my life, two that I chose against and am so grateful for were smoking and the Mormon religion. I was close to the second, within a week of baptism.
Melissa, would you ever consider doing a video sharing your thoughts on Michael Heiser's written material?
Then, who wrote the Book of Mormon?
Does not the Pentateuch end with a Do not add to or take away statement?
i’m not going to lie i’m a member of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints and i loved this video. thank you for coming from a genuine place!
I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.””

Nice production values, attractive presentation.
And we "show our faith by our works," as James 2:18 says
The reason claiming "works doesn't save you" ACTUALLY DOESN'T excuse you from ordinances such as baptism and Communion is simply that doing that very short, relatively easy list of things (and it goes without saying) is NOT EVEN CLOSE to saying that one must never sin to be saved.
John 6:40
And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

I'm enjoying your content Melissa, trying to up my witness game, which is currently lame, what a shame. Sorry 😂
They will only be nice to you if you become Mormon. I live around a lot of them.
Friendship? BAH! He wanted your s-o-u-l...

I really like your storytelling👍
Well said. An unusual level of arrogance indeed.
ahh, the dishonesty... and she is getting these accolades...it is sickening.
Excellent job. Great video!
Any religion that tells me I will not be saved if I am not with them, I can do without.
Thank you for this!! I never knew ANY of this!
