An Aurora family lost $58,000 when a scammer pretending to be a Chase Bank representative told them to do a "wire transfer reversal" to protect their accounts.
Contact Denver7 hears different versions of the same story: Your bank is calling, and they tell you someone has transferred a large sum out of your account through Zelle.
There is always a new twist - a new family losing everything they have worked for. And there is a new push to add protections.
Ryan Graham practices what he preaches, but for this Aurora music pastor, sometimes that can be difficult.
"We feel pretty embarrassed that we were scammed in this way," said Ryan.
His wife, Kassie Graham, got a call from what looked like the number for Chase Bank's customer service.
"They said, 'Is this Kassie Graham? We got an alert on your account that somebody is trying to make a Zelle payment for $2,000,'" said Kassie, who immediately asked her husband. "No, we didn't make a payment."
The Grahams didn't know it yet, but scammers are notoriously good at spoofing - or faking - real numbers.
"In addition to Chase, they do that with Social Security Administration, Amazon, and all the big names out there. And they impersonate them," said Roseann Freitas with the Better Business Bureau. "And so people have to understand that just because your phone tells you it's Chase, it might not be."

Good thing my mom's old fashioned. If she gets a call like that. She'll hang up, get in her car and drive to the bank and ask what the hell is going on.
Me too.
Me too.
Either that or call your bank using a number you know is legit.
Go grandma .
Yep...
"Wasn't very good English",.....is just ONE MORE REASON to keep these people out of public contact positions. -- I'm SO tired of calling Customer Service and find out I'm speaking to someone in a foreign country, whose English skills are horrible.
Yes, but they're hired bc they work for less.
Welcome to corporate America, even worse is AI crap, they can rarely solve problems and rarely hand us off to a human being?
@@user-bs5vl5yt2tCope and seethe
Basically I have stopped calling any customer service anywhere. I simply cannot understand them. If that sounds harsh, well, I am sorry about that. Companies have outsourced these things to India and Pakistan to save money.
@@BigfistJP -- That's what I'm talking about!
this is just so simple, never believe anything in an email, text, or phone call. when in doubt ignore it and don't click on anything inside the message.
I love how chase said “there’s nothing we can do”-
I Hate that bank
I agree with you, but BofA and Wells Fargo are much worse.
Sorry to disagree with you regarding BofA l was scammed twice in two months and the Texas bank denied both different times to different scammers both were under $60.00 dollars???
Till Biden took office l can't remember any scammers getting into my credit card account in 30 years.
When our government supports criminality we get more of the same that is exactly what has happened since Biden took office???
If you zelle transfer based on a call you received, there is very little BofA or Chase could do here as they were not on the phone with you.
Isn't Chase an owner of Zelle?
@@tomm1583 Yes, Chase is one of the big banks that co-own the service. According to wikipedia, the banks that each own a piece of Zelle are Bank of America, Truist, Capital One, JPMorgan Chase, PNC Bank, U.S. Bank, and Wells Fargo.
I bet that ""Chase rep" had a strong Indian accent
Hahahahaahaha
He bought a new camel
Of Course!!
And his name is Thomas Daniels
Bank at locally small community banks where you can drive and talk in person.
Banks will never call....go to your bank or website for yourself...please do not be dense!
They do text you about charges
@@daniellebrooks7510 But even those can be fraudulent. There are lots of YT videos about people being scammed by a text that supposedly was from their bank.
I just don't answer the cell phone to any non personal numbers - AT ALL. In fact I then block the number from phoning me again.
Exactly! Never answer the phone from any number you don’t recognize. Let them leave a voicemail and get back to them.
ha ha ..they just go down the list their next fake phone numbers ... blocking one number ain't gonna bother them ... since the phone number displayed is spoofed anyway
Problem is it was Chase customer service that was calling.
@@kassiegraham1249 I hope this situation gets straighten out and turns around to your favor. 🙂
@@1962pjb agree. Think in this case Chase probably has to cover it. Only say that cuz during the fraud call the wife got suspicious and used her cell to call her local chase bank to confirm that everything was legit. That rep confirmed that everything was okay. That's where chase dropped the ball. Sounds like some dumb, incompetent rep green lighted without looking into the details on how the process should work. Sounds like she just rushed the wife off the phone or something. Usually those calls are recorded too
So, the bad broken English wasn't the first clue. SMH
2:21 Bob Menendez warning people about scams. You can't make this up folks! 😅
Wait.. so how did the call back to chase fail to stop this? It seems like this is 100% on Chases hands if when they called Chase directly, the agent reassured them.
These two questioned the validity of the original call and took the correct steps of verifying with the bank, as instructed at the end of this video. 🤯
Because they. Called the number that called them which was fake. Spoofed.
@@andredaedone7732 - 0:58 “The Grams were suspicious, so they called chase bank on another line…”
If they called Chase directly, the spoofed number doesn’t matter. The spoofed number only works on the outgoing call, it can’t intercept calls directly to Chase.
Either the reporting is awful and the Grams didn’t actually call Chase, they just called the same number back, which explains these peoples idiocy… or… the reporting is still awful and Chase really screwed things up.
@@HiThisIsMineobviously chase didn’t care. They are the worst-
What they should have done was called Chase back on the number that is on the back of their credit card. But they didn't. They called the same number that called them
@@tsquared4831 No, the number that called them was spoofed as the actual chase bank number. He actually called the right number.
The guy called chase and while he was on the phone with the ACTUAL agent, the scammers called him back and he figured, “well, great, since you don’t know what you’re talking about, I’ll talk to the original guy cause he knows everything”
That the the opportunity for Chase to help the guy out and let him know it’s likely he’s speaking with a scammer.
The issue is some calls centers in India, in the third party operators are legitimately representing banks like Chase yet at the same time are also scammers.
It is plausible that the Chase rep they talked to was in the same building/ office as the scammer.
People need to start watching scam baiters on TH-cam to educate themselves more fully on how sophisticated the scam operations are.
Our politicians and the media corporations they own don’t share the full story of what is going on
There are mules here in America .
So you think it’s an inside job? Like chase employees are the ones doing these scams?
Don't bank on your phone people.....EVER!!!!
I don't know so many people are doing this silly online/phone banking- it is more convenient for thieves to steal your money
This is also a phone software security issue that permits this kind of spoofing. Something they should fix if possible.
Why is this ALWAYS happening to Chase customers? The vast majority are Chase customers so that should tell people that the problem is also with Chase bank.
Better yet, get the hell off of Zell!
Chase told them to trust the scammers?😱 Just saw another story about Chase telling customers who'd been scammed at their ATM to drop dead. What's the point of having a bank that sides with the criminals.
Lie
Hopefully their saving grace will be the actual call they made to their bank while on the line with those people and their bank confirmed it was valid and okay. That's where the bank dropped the ball.
It’s very likely people working for the banks are the thieves.
This is completely on the customer. If a customer gets a call that there is fraud on their account, instead of calling the bank, just log directly into your account to see if there are any transactions you didnt authorize and alerts/notices. This victim called Chase and said that they got a call from Chase so why would the rep think it's fraud. Why didn't the customer hang up on the person who called them so that they could talk to the chase rep that they called and knew was legit? There are entirely TOO many stories/videos regarding fraud for customers to still fall for this. Also. This is going to end up hurting other customers as the banks recoup their losses by raising fees/cutting services
Such a lovely couple, I pray they get their money back in full.
And a few extra brain cells
Thank you for pulling this off so smoothly.
Usually, the bank will call you if you authorized them to alert you when you have a limited expending, otherwise you never answer, you can call your local bank or go in person, is the best way
I wouldn't use Zelle for anything at anytime and my bank keeps trying to get me to use it.... not happening.
Chase should be sued for their BS - they are the worst and only make things right if the media gets to them.
I truly pray that you all find resolve!!!🙏
Reassured? Baloney. They didn't hang up and call Chase.
What about the FDIC? Don’t they have to pay to replace that money
No. That covers you if the bank goes out of business.
If a high amount of money starts exiting from any account, put a stop on it till the owner gives their permission to proceed?
I don't back with chase, not even a credit card.
Ok why would you believe you need to transfer funds to stop a transaction?

😢 I'm sorry that this happened to you.
i got many scam calls all the time and i never pick up the phone... it does not matter if it is from the banks or what ... Never listen to weird phone numbers or reply TEXT ... if u know that is from the bank then call the number of the back of debit card and talk to them... never reply text or give out PIN to anyoneee.. PERIOD ..
Was depositing my refund last year, and wanted $38 returned. Teller (I'm guessing, thought she was going to get a $38 tip). "Excuse me, the balance of $38, I wanted that." She said "Oh, I'm sorry." I reported her to the bank Mgr., she no longer works there.
Frankly, I'm not convinced that they called Chase and were told that the call was legit. That's as questionable as the scammer's own story.
Bruh, I only pay cash except on purchases to build my credit. Had my card information stolen magically (absolutely never not have the card on me) and they ran the bill. Wellsfargo refunded me everything but 99 roses. Im not the kind of guy to give roses, wellsfargo lost my business. Banks are crappy but the people that defend them are worse.
yes i dont think they really called chase
You can bet they called some number provided by the scammers so scammer #2 could do a Chase customer service act
Lack of common sense and wisdom,an American trait.
Banks need to put some type of security measure in olace to stop criminals from spoofing their bank numbers. Banks need to put up better security measures!
Oh here in Colorado the attorney general won't do anything about it I'll just wait for a ton of victims and then they'll go ahead and file a lawsuit against face shake them down and keep all the money
THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU ARE THE BEST
Hypothetical situation. Take that teacher who let herself be scammed and filed for Chase to reimburse her. Suppose someone starts a GoFundMe, impersonating her. They identify themselves with her real information, such as being a teacher, who works at X school. She asks for donations for "critically needed school supplies." Many people are scammed out of thousands of dollars in total. Does this teacher see it as her responsibility to reimburse all those scammed people, since the scammers used her name?
So sad
Chase is up to something, I f was super rich, I would help
Yes, the teacher in your hypothetical situation absolutely is part of the scam, even though she did not consciously or voluntarily participate in it. She nonetheless made the scam possible.

This happened to me as well but not from chase. I called my bank using the number on my checks.
They don't care what happens to their members, this happens often over and over again
update??
The bank said the call was legit, it probably did come from one of their agents. It seems these people who call know too much about current balances and account details. It has to be people working for the banks doing a lot of this theft. Just too suspicious.
I keep hearing stuff about chase. I'm just waiting for a class action lawsuit against them🤷🏻
I can't tell you how great is
Sounds like they did not really call chase but rather the fake chase number on the phone.
How do people fall for these scams? Simple logic should prevail.
Because when they called Chase directly… when they used “simple logic”, they were reassured that the call was legit.
With that said.. this guy is putting his faith in God… is your question about him having basic logic or if he used it?

There are two better solutions. One, never answer a number unless it is family or friends. Scammers don't call back. Two, the real villains are the cell companies for allowing spoofed caller IDs. That needs to stop. There should be a verification system. I'm on the side of banks with this. They should not have to be guardians of stupid. When someone authorizes or walks away without logging off, you're on your own.
