  • Unbreakable: The Western States 100 follows the four lead men on this amazing journey. Hal Koerner, two time defending Western States champion, and running store entrepreneur from Ashland, Oregon. Geoff Roes, undefeated at the 100-mile distance, an organic chef from Juneau, Alaska. Anton Krupicka, undefeated in every ultramarathon he has ever started, a graduate student living in Boulder, Colorado. Kilian Jornet, the young mountain runner and two time Ultra-trail du Mont-Blanc champion, from Spain.
    While their lives may be quite different, the goal is the same: win the Western States 100-mile run. A win will require breaking the course record and running the fastest time in the history of the race. An epic showdown ensues, from Squaw Valley, CA in Lake Tahoe, up though the high snow covered Sierra Nevada Mountains, down through the extreme heat of the American River Canyons and finishing in Auburn, CA.
    Though all four are undefeated, three must break and only one can remain Unbreakable.

    This is quite possibly the best ultra film out there. The shots, the story, the athletes. One in a million chance of it all coming together like it did, and what a result. Thanks JB and J for posting this!

    I had not heard of ultras before this film appeared in my TH-cam feed about 3 years ago. At that time I was 100 kgs and had only ever been running for football back in my youth. This film inspired me to pick myself up,stop eating crappy food and to get out and run regularly. Since then I have ran 1 marathon, 6 halfs. And several shorter races. I am currently preparing for Berlin marathon this Autumn. And I'm not certain that any if this would have happened if not for this film. Thank you Anton Krupicka, geoff Roes and killian jornet for the participation in this amazing piece of ultra folklore

    It's incredible how in the space of ten years the sport has changed so much. It no longer feels like a frontier, the domain only of eccentrics. Nowadays to have 4 strong runners at WS100 would be considered an extremely shallow field. We owe a great deal to the folks who pioneered ultrarunning and got it to where it is today.

      I have a friend who told me about Ultra's about 10 years ago and I remember thinking he was crazy. But then he did the Ironman with a bone spur, after not being able to do the ironman because of a broken clavicle. I became a believer in the human will then. No, it doesn't seem crazy or eccentric anymore, it just seems awesome and possible.

      The idea of running WS100 in a dress shirt goes back to Mike Catlin, who won in 1979 and 1980. I recall a training clinic that he led, and one of us noobs asked him what kind of flashlight he carries... he famously responded "I plan to be finished before it gets dark". I always carried a flashlight!

I find it funny that people are still offended by his simplistic approach and lack of gear & nutrition. He trained and raced like there was no tomorrow. Half of hiking running is just mentally having a map in your mind... it is like your mind psychically prepares your body for what comes next and you can just go on auto pilot. If you're taking it in and trying to perform. Thats just too much brain juice burning up energy to get into that zen mode.

    Thanks for the release, I appreciated a lot to see this "old" yet truly epic race : last and amazing exploit of Anton in racing, the first European attempt to win, the very beginning of ultra trail running internationalization... and a miracle from Geoff
    What actually changed besides booty shorts of kilian ? The heat management improved, Kilian brought the slab sens out of it, the West Coast pack has become much more international. And today it sounds so weird to "introduce" UTMB (21'50), to consider 2000 applicant a lot ...
    A decade later, Geoff is still wining but Kilian has just taken mountain running to another dimension. Tony pushes less competitive more hybrid directions of high interest and Joe Grant crushed the Nolan's in the purest style.
    Except for lotteries and overcrowded european races I must say our little world has very well developped.

    From watching this feature film, I couldn’t help but notice how far video footages have come since this race was held. Those footages that were following the runners were shaky and bouncing around. Now, the shots are so silky smooth thanks to improved image stabilization technology and gimbals. And the aerial shot of Kilian running on the mountain initially had me thinking it was captured by a drone. Then I realized that there was no drone for video capturing back then, at least not that I know of. It’s just amazing how video technology has come this far and will be getting even better as the days go by. Unlike a closed circuit race track where we only need a few cameras at strategic locations, ultra trail running does not allow us this ability. I would have loved to watch the part where Geoff overtook Anton, or see how runners tackle certain sections of the course which are not easily accessible by camera carrying crew. Anyway, good job for putting together a motivational movie during this stay at home period. Thank you!!!

      Yeah, no GoPros, no Gimbal stabilization, no DSLRs, no drones. We had 10 lb cameras and had to actually change tapes while running 6 min pace on a rugged trail downhill following these guys. It is a totally different production environment today than 10 years ago.

      @commbir5148 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I couldn't recover from when Ansleigh was like, "Would trail running have been invented if it wasn't for me? Who knows?" What a blowhard thing to say. Yeah dude, you invented running on non-paved surfaces. Sure.

    • @jeffostlind6225
      @jeffostlind6225 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      commbir he did invent this sport though. That’s why Western States is the oldest trail ultra. I won’t even try to speculate on TH-cam why this particular run of his was the catalyst of such a large movement, but it was. Does he have some pride? Probably. We all do. And I don’t wasn’t to be caught pulling the splinter out of another’s man eye before pulling the log out of my own. If having some pride means people shouldn’t like us, we’d all be without friends. So I’ll give him some respect, understanding he did invent my sport (at least in America, where I live), but I’ve got too much sin in my life to be willing to ridicule him for his

      @@jeffostlind6225 Are you showing a little too much pride here but confusing it for righteousness maybe? Or does it not count if you're preaching? We can have a battle of Jesus quotes all day if you like. "Do unto others." I would definitely want someone to say something to me if I was arrogant and self-aggrandizing. I reject this idea that we can't ask others to change their behaviors just because we ourselves aren't perfect.

      commbir I just said I was prideful. So call it righteous or call it sin. But yeah I want to be less prideful. I’m not trying to toss Bible references around here. Just trying to explain my stance on the matter. Since you shared your opinion in a reply to my post (indicating the start of a conversation), I thought I also would share my opinion with you. I’m only explaining where I’m at personally on the matter

      @@jeffostlind6225 Sorry to disappoint but he didn't invent the sport. That is utter BS. There were mountain ultra trail races long long before. Even more so, he wasn't the first to run the Western States course the first time. There was a group of army man who first completed the 100 miler two years before he did. The sad thing is that Gordon has not been willing to acknowledge that.
