    Im so tired of people wanting possums and raccoons, some just plucking them off the streets. Please, we know they're cute and meme-y, but theyre both intelligent animals who have different care requirements than the typical cat or dog. They have different minds and behaviors. Like one dude I met had a Raccoon and said he fed him Froot Loops like I-

    • @12woodsteps
      @12woodsteps 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Coming from a farmers perspective: they're dangerous as well. ESPECIALLY when picked up off the side of the road. Sure, they're very cute and cuddly and are quirky, unique, and fun to train. But they're still wild animals. They haven't been domesticated over hundreds of years like cats or dogs. One of my friends picked up a possum as a pet, despite owning multiple cats, and kept them all outside together. The fucking possum ATE HIS CATS and he refused to acknowledge that this wild animal was seeing prey and eating it, because the possum ate cat food and wasn't human aggressive. They aren't pets, not unless you're extremely highly trained and are willing to set aside your life to care for them. They're still wild animals.

      Really! Also if you want a very difficult exotic pet, like a raccoon, wait until you moved out and have your own space. Unless your parents are all in and have more then enough money, the animal (and probably you too) is going to suffer.

    • @12woodsteps
      @12woodsteps 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Pigeonsandpoultry we 'fostered' a handful of baby opossums once, after shooting an adult that had ransacked our chicken coop. The possum was a mom, found babies in the pouch, couldn't leave them there and took them in until we could drop them off at a rescue site. From our limited knowledge, they seemed pretty easy to care for, if you treated them like kittens. Then again, they were tiny babies and it was mostly my mom doing the work while my sister and I cooed at how tiny they were, lol. I can't imagine having one as an adult. They'd get so challenging so quickly. Adorable nightmares, for sure, but definitely nightmares

    I have a feeling that the duck petitions kept specifying "two ducks" because ducks are incredibly social creatures that need to be with others of their own kind to be happy. That being said, no matter how educated a kid is on a certain creature, if their guardian doesn't approve if it then they need to just wait until they can move out on their own and get as many uncommon pets as they want, as far away as that day may seem to a kid. (Also, as someone who's a cat person, I question how that person thought that the conflict between their two cats would be alleviated by adding another kitten into the mix? Unless they're kittens that are still socializing, cats don't NEED to play with another cat. You can just play with it more frequently yourself. Stop projecting your own human feelings onto your cat!)

    • @littlekitsune1
      @littlekitsune1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Lol yeah those cats are in for a NASTY surprise. They're already stressed and then this person brings in little Mad Max to the mix. They need more space to have their own resources without competition, not less.

    • @matrixdefector95
      @matrixdefector95 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@asioats that is rough. and such an ass move by your dad. Maybe he just didn't want to "be the bad guy" and he didn't talk to your mom about what he would have said. But then when he refuses after the fact, it makes him seem worse.
      [rant below, proceed at your own risk]
      for what it is worth, my dad is just unreliable for certain things. I lived with him for about a year when I hit hard times and he said I could live with him rent-free while I got back on my feet. Then the month I am moving out, have all of my move-in fees and money for furniture and everything saved up, he needs to "borrow" money. I would not have been so angered by him not paying me back if he had not sat there and sounded like he was so sincere and so broken over having to ask his own son for a loan to pay his rent. Luckily for him, and me, I had enough saved up that the money was not a huge dent to my budget. It was only like $1300 or something like that. He never once spoke of the loan after that day, except once when I pressed him about it and he said he would pay as he could over the next few months. He could have just told me straight-up that he could not afford it and just apologized. What I wanted more than anything was an apology, to be honest. But that was 6 years ago, so I can't really go and ask him about it now.
      After that debacle, I did not give him an opportunity to further disappoint me. When I was a kid it was just simple stuff like "can we go to the movies next weekend?" and the "we'll see" turned into "the movie we wanted to see is tomorrow, are we going?" and he would just seemingly get angry and say he never said that we would, so we can't complain about it. And we never did complain, at least after some point. We kept trying, though, my brothers and I. Because we figured maybe one day he would change. Kids give so much to their parents, just trying to get praise and recognition, and they admire their parents so much. I thought he was the perfect father, growing up.
      My dad is a nice guy, don't get me wrong. Not a horrible father to his youngest child, who was born when I was nearly 18 and already didn't live with him. I think he matured a lot as he has gotten older. I still am going to try to be a better parent than he was to my brothers and I. My number one requirement for parenthood is financial stability, and I have the privilege of being able to choose when I have kids (I am gay). So much trauma from my early childhood came from being poor and from my father being emotionally immature. I have a ways to go still on both of those fronts, but every day we learn and grow.

      I think this parenting style leads to people growing up to think that the word "maybe" is just a condescending version of the word "no". I can't say the word "maybe" around my husband when I genuinely need time to think about something; it's like it triggers his PTSD from when his parents would do that to him.

    The thing with these are, when I have kids and if they did something like that, no. They definitely could not have the animal. I had pets growing up, yes. But it took time. My parents wanted me to research and know everything about that animal. I also had to pay for a lot of the stuff for it. I mostly had fish and a hamster at one point. But when parents say no about an animal they often are not just being mean. There is time, and money that go into animals. I spent over $500 for medical bills on my senior cat this year. That isn’t counting stuff for my other cat, food, litter, toys and all that. I also have a ball python. I’ve spent over $100 on him for food plus extra
    For all of his stuff. And if he ever needs to see a vet that isn’t gonna be cheap. Kids, teens whomever don’t act upset or mean or rude when your parents say no to a pet. Ask to sit with them and ask why. There will be a reason and maybe you can talk it out. But if it’s still no, understand there are reasons.

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Parents are just humans. They aren't always right, and they don't always have good reasons. ...which obviously isn't to say you can force them to buy a pet for their kid, but I don't think it's bad for kids to learn that "older" doesn't always mean "wiser" and it's actually okay to question things sometimes.
      A lot of the time, parents just project themselves onto their kids. They think that if they would have gotten bored of a pet after a few months, then surely their kid would too, and they don't want to put in the effort of actually enforcing the rule that the kid needs to continue being responsible for the animal when that "inevitably" happens.
      Proper animal care is a huge waste of money, so I'd say cost is a valid reason for a parent to refuse. However, much of the time, parents will have really silly reasons instead.

    • @SinWeissfell
      @SinWeissfell 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think there is two sides with that. On one hand, yes, you are absolutely correct. There is a lot of responsibility going into a pet, especially so with a bird or a reptile since they are 100% reliant on you. It's important for the kid to know that and be responsible around the pet and whatever concerns it.
      On the other side pets can make an amazing way of learning this responsibility. I've watched my uncle and his wife get their two kids guinnea pigs as a way of educating them about what it means to take care of a living creature. When they were younger they got to know the fun parts of owning a pet and watched/learned how to take care of them by watching their parents and helping with the care. It's now up to them to care for them and their parents are just making sure everything is okay occasionally but the guinnea pigs are part of the family and playing and feeding time is always a family event lol. This approach of course takes a lot of time and energy from the parents side and I see why it's too much to care for a pet after an 8-5 shift of whatever job on top of taking care of your own kids but I think it can do a lot of good

    Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh! I’m way late but here’s my essay on that fricking bird petition.
    1) There are a lot of cons. To name a few:
    -screaming
    -money (toys, pellets, fresh food, etc.)
    -you have to invest time to train them
    -Did I mention cost?!
    2) birds aren’t a source of ‘company’, they are an animal
    3) I have classmates that literally get budgies as a birthday present. This angers me. Because the kid who is actually willing to research for over a year is never getting done, but the kid with dumb parents get it immediately. Not to mention: they are in a stupidly small cage and are on a terrible diet and their wings are clipped and their not trained and the kid gets bored of them after like a week.
    Do you get my frustration?
    Cockatoos are literally the worst. Imagine having a toddler that screams, flies, and has a ridiculously powerful beak that can chomp your finger off.
    Good luck with your new friend! /s

    I think that if your parents want you to make a petition, or if your parents want you to show your dedication, then there’s really nothing wrong with making a petition. Its like making a presentation or an essay (which I had to do, lol). The problem is that these kids aren’t displaying their knowledge in the description. I don’t know if any of those kids who want axolotl’s have what it takes to keep one-some might, some might not. A lot of parents are uneducated on pets, so a single petition probably wont change that, but if your parent is convinced by one (and you’re responsible) then all power to ya.

    I have so many problems with parents allowing their kids to own pets outside a goldfish. 99 time out of 100, the care is absurdly sub-par and it takes no time for the kid to lose intrest resulting in neglect. Pets, especially reptiles, are not plants you can water every now and then and leave alone for most of their existence, they take special care that kids just cannot provide. I'm sorry for ranting but it infuriates me.
