    If you can’t afford to buy a reptile (or any animal for that matter) without fundraising, don’t buy the animal. You won’t be able to afford it after buying it either.
    If you can afford an animal without fundraising, don’t, because you can afford the animal and other people shouldn’t have to pay for the things you want.

There's no reason other people should buy you a pet, unless you're crowdfunding for a service dog or the like, because our healthcare system is a nightmare and people need help. So I saved the money- every single time someone gave me money i would constantly ask people for money all because I wanted a dog. I finally got him and I still love him to this day so at the time I couldnt afford a dog but he still gets taken care of. Thank you for recognizing that a vets office is a business and needs to pay expenses. I work at a vets office and the price of meds and vaccines are fluctuating as of late. We also have things being seriously back ordered and people get mad when we don’t have their food or something that we literally have no control over because our supplier ran out. We feel bad racking up prices but we spend so much keeping everything running. Yes, we charge $15 for a bandage change but the 4 products we use in the process are just getting more and more expensive as they become less available.

    • @lilkidd8936
      @lilkidd8936 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your suppliers are corrupt profiting off of people's an animal's pain and vets are enabling it because people either pay or their pets die. Same as the American healthcare system. Most medicines are not expensive to produce at all but you and your supplies are selling them at sometimes 100x the original production cost. Trust me, I understand how the system works. My dog got parvo (very deadly disease) because I rescued a sick dog off the street, and housed it overnight for one night before bringing it to the shelter. I kept the animals apart but parvo is highly contagious and she caught it anyway. (My dog was a rescue and an older dog as we were told her shots were up to date which is why she was not vaccinated for it.) It would've cost $1600 for my dog to stay overnight at pet hospice and be nursed back to health, but I ended up paying $800 dollars to do it myself. $800 for three medications, one liquid bottle and two pill bottles with five pills in each one. It was worth it to save my girl but that doesn't change that the system is corrupt and I was forced to line people's pockets or watch my dog slowly die. It's not your fault that things are bad but pet owners are not upset for no reason and you nor vet offices are the victim here. I do want to pay to keep offices in business and I'm happy to see good, loving animal care docs getting the pay they deserve for saving sick animals but the profit incentives are far too much for your medical suppliers.

      @rebeltango 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lilkidd8936 you made a grave error in not confirming your dog's vaccination record, and then exposing it to a strange, unwell animal. when you couldn't afford to pay multiple trained professionals to provide necessary lifesaving care for your dog, you took a risk and did it the "cheap" way. expertise is valuable. the ability to immediately stabilize a sick animal the moment it gets sicker is also valuable. an additional $800 to administer three medications, provide overnight round the clock care, and have instant access to additional specialized care when minutes make a huge difference is not an absurd fee. I want to know who your vet is, because it sounds like their prices are pretty reasonable!

    I spent 26k on treatments for my childhood pet kitty cat.
    They sure do add up fast, especially in the midst of an old friend passing from this life into the next one.
    Under normal circumstances I wouldn't, nor couldn't spend that much on an animal but that cat was my constant companion through a very rape and substance abuse filled childhood, the subsequent turbulent, violent, and general awkwardness that was adolescence, into adulthood and becoming a man. I could not have done it without him, and miss him every day.
    ...now I'm a sad popsicle. : (

    My mom sort of does the “can’t say no” thing with animals, especially rescues. But I’m the only one who takes care of the animals, and things like dogs is definitely not my passion. She got a rescue Anatolian who is now obsessively licking her leg to the point where it bleeds, and while she’s determined to fix the leg before she thinks of rehoming the dog to a proper home she doesn’t actually want to put in the work, it’s all up to me. But the dog would be much better off at a different home in the hands of somebody else, and it’s not “shameful” to rehome an injured dog. I hate the false rescue mentality in people.

    When I got adopted my cat, she had an eye infection I wasn’t aware of. I got her medical records after adopting and saw that she had been given medication for it, and it seemed mostly cleared up. After a few days, she was clearly uncomfortable, wouldn’t open her eyes completely, etc. So I took her to the vet and had to a week of ointment in each eye twice a day. Took her back in because one eye had cleared up completely, and the other was still irritated. So another week of ointment in that eye. Talking to the vet, she said that this is something that could be a consistent problem throughout her life, because the infection that caused it will be dormant in her for the rest of her life. Things like stress or other illnesses can exacerbate the problem and cause it to come back. That was three years ago, and I’m so grateful she hasn’t had any problems since. But it’s also something that I wasn’t expecting, nor was it something I was prepared for when I adopted her. And now I know that in the future I need to be ready for those kinds of expenses before getting additional pets. Obviously it’s impossible to anticipate every potential issue and I may not have enough set aside we’re one to arise, but it’s my responsibility to at least try to be prepared

    Story time: my husband and I decided to get our first reptile, a corn snake, from a rescue. The rescue had two snakes on offer for us. They were brothers, from the same clutch of eggs, and had been together for 5 years, even living in the same enclosure (which is really bad for snakes and the reason they were rescued).
    Now, snakes do not bond in the same way that mammals do (as you'll know). So while my heart was breaking over the idea of separating two brothers, my husband reminded me that they were probably happier apart than they would be together. And besides, wouldn't it be better to take one home and give it excellent care, than take two and give them both mediocre care because we couldn't afford the expenses?
    This is the kind of thing you have to consider folks. If you don't have the resources to care for an animal, then don't try and stretch yourself to the point where you have to go begging to the internet for help! If your pet gets unexpectedly sick, then that's understandable, but there's a difference between an unfortunate circumstance and biting off more than you can chew. And our snake is doing very well, so we made the right choice taking one home and not both.

It always hurts to tell someone that their total for the treatment we did is $6000 or when people have to sign an AMA form or have to euthanize their animal because they don’t have enough money. But on the other hand, having a pet is a luxury, ya know? I get both sides of it, for sure. And you’re right, technicians are really underpaid. My 501c Animal Rescue was $250 for the filing and license and $60 for the EIN number. So $310 for everything.

    I had a ginnie pig and it had a severe eye infection and it would cost 800 dollars to remove the eye, we just gave him anti biotic which was 100 dollars and took care of him till he passed away. Sometimes its hard to let go, but we couldn't afford 800 dollars for eye removal and apparently eye infection is connected to there lungs also being infected, so to spend 800 when he might die still regardless. Interesting the antibiotic and feeding him dandelions gave him about month more of life. Yet his companion is thriving and still with us. I feel like hes got a healthier immune system. We just have him with out a companion cause we did buy another gunnie pig and he died after only having him for 2 or 3 months. So gerald is lonely but doing well and we have no plans to buy more ginnie pigs in the future.

    my mom and I recently lost one of our 3 cats to cancer and it's so so tempting to get another one, especially because people often find strays and kittens where we live. but we've both lost our jobs due to covid so we have to say no, especially so we know we can take care of the cats we already have. it's not that hard to be responsible.

    I loved the video! I think you did an amazing job explaining all of this. I love rescueing reptiles but I work my butt off to make the money for them. I babysit, train dogs, pet sit for various animals including reptiles, and am working on getting another more stable job and getting a youtube channel started to hopefully eventually be able to make money off of it. I currently only have one recue beardy and would love to rescue more but i am making sure I have over $200+ dollars saved and ready to go for when I do recue another reptile.

    Swollen limbs can likely indicate gout. I have unfortunately bought two geckos with gout when I was younger. Happens from either a high protein diet or persistent dehydration. It's usually the latter.

    I feel so lucky we actually have a local reptile store that breeds their own animals and takes great care of them, they specialize in ball pythons and geckos and also have some other animals. It’s where I got my first ball python!

    I work at a vet and I hate whenever we have people come in with an expensive breed of dog but then can’t afford the bills and complain about it, same with people who buy puppies

    Hey GoHerping! I know you feel really strongly about Petsmart and Petco and I used to agree with you. I started working for Petsmart as a dog trainer but since I own reptiles I was also trained for the pet care areas. I can tell you from experience that every employee there cares about the animals and provides exceptional care for the animals while there in our store. If they get sick or come in sick we take them off the sales floor and put them in isolation tanks and take them to the vet and don’t sell them until they are healthy.
    We recently got in a TINY crested gecko and even though he’s healthy, we are keeping him until he’s big enough to be sold.
    I know lots of the issues with chain pet stores is the distributor or where the animals come from, and if they send us sick or dying animals we will call them to report it, refuse payment for the animal (so they lose money and don’t want to send us sick animals) and we will stop buying from them if it keeps happening.
    Long story short, it’s time to stop viewing chain stores as the enemy. We all care about animals and we do right by them.

    One time I was at petco and I found a baby chameleon outside of its enclosure on a nearby shelf. It looked barely alive and a little underweight. We had to tell an employee so they could put it back in the cage but I have no idea if it survived. I don’t know much about reptiles (I’m more of a bird person) but the enclosures at petco look too small and I don’t think any of the animals are well taken care of and it’s sad. I went in the other day and they had a surrendered bird, a canary winged parakeet, and a worker insisted the bird was a green cheek conure. The two look nothing alike and honestly it makes me upset because different birds have different diets, so they could be feeding it wrong.

    In my opinion you could have been much more (brutally) honest. I'm more in the axolotl community specifically than the general reptile/exotic pet community and these kickstarters/gofunme's/petitions are getting way out of hand. Every few days on the Axolotl subreddit some shitty kid has made a "get me 10,000 signatures and my mom said I can have an axolotl" petition that people will actually sign for some reason. I think it's appalling and in that situation I guarantee neither the child nor adult will properly care for the animal. Axolotls happen to be a very trendy pet and I see them suffering improper husbandry every single day online because some parent bought their kid one thinking they could throw it in a fish tank. You could honestly make a video on this topic specifically as it is becoming an epidemic. So many axolotls living in un-cycled environments, on gravel, eating fish flakes. It is tragic.
