Elements of a Cottage Garden

- What does a cottage garden consist of? To me, it's so much more than just the actual garden space. Today I am sharing all of the elements of a cottage garden that I have incorporated - these helped create a beautiful, cozy space our entire family enjoys all season.
If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you know we recently returned home from Germany visiting my husband's family. This was our last week there, and it was very bittersweet. This visit was full of so many beautiful historic buildings and homes, and if you watched any of my stories, you know I shared so many beautiful garden spaces as well.
It might be hard to believe, but I recorded this week's TH-cam video before our visit there. This was a big trip for us, and I wanted to be prepared ahead of time so I could truly be in the moment during our stay. It was incredible - an international flight with four boys, luggage lost and so much more to tell, which I promise to share later on!
I didn't have many expectations prior to our visit, but I cannot express enough how incredibly beautiful this country is. The GORGEOUS gardens and outdoor spaces played a major role in this, and I was so happy to see so many cottage garden elements in all of these spaces that truly added so much charm!
I am so excited to share all about our trip to Germany soon along with all of the cottage inspiration I gained there, so be sure to be on the lookout for that. In the meantime, I hope these cottage garden elements have inspired you! I would love to know what you think in the comments below!

Stone, rocks and pathways are pure cottage charm to me. And if I have a picket fence and a tree.... I am home. As to the fire pit... My son is now 50, my two grandsons are 29 and 19. When i go for a visit , nothing brings us together like a fire pit. The stories we remember, the people here and gone. The laughter!!! It brings out a bonding we cannot replicate in the house. We stay out there for hours. Its the best ever!!!! Fills my heart with joy!
An arbor up both sides and across your beautiful doors on your garage with climbing roses, wisteria, morning glories would be stunning.

I'd pass on the morning glories. Too hard to control. Clematis, climbing hydrangea( if you can wait 5 years), honeysuckle

An arbor over the garage door would be lovely. I adore the look of morning glory and moonflower together. Morning glory open up during the day and moonflower opens at night. Like you, I love foxglove...I, also, love Canterbury bells in the garden. There are so many beautiful perrenials to choose from for a cottage garden. 💕

Now after 41 years of marriage, we have built a cape cod home, surrounded by white pines and a huge maple in the lower part of the yard. I just found you today. Actually I watched an older video from two years ago first, then this one. You’re yard is absolutely gorgeous and inviting. The only thing I would add is a slice of lemon pie on a place on your table 🍋 I’ve only begun my cottage garden adventure this Spring. I’m so excited but it’s also intimidating a bit. I’m learning what flowers to use, placing them in a way that something is always blooming…pretty much everything is new to me. I’ve always had beautiful plants and flowers but nothing in this style. I was able to visit a local nursery and got some beautiful plants yesterday and today. The best thing is they have experts there! That was nice. I’ve never been a violet, blue, lavender, pink shades of flowers until recent year after being gifted several flowers in these hues. At first I was like, oh my, what do I do with these shades. But I embraced them and now they are my favorites!!! So my cottage garden room is full of those shades along with white salvia, white and peach begonias and a pop of yellow flowers. I enjoyed this video. It’s exactly what I was looking for.
There are MANY varieties of clematis with completely different flower shapes and colors and different bloom times that are climbers. My brother and sister-in-law have a wedge shaped lot with a small front yard but huge back yard. They completely surrounded the back yard at the property line with columnar arborvitae, with many floral beds and ornamental grasses. It really is like a secret garden!

Your garden is so charming! My son has several David Austin climbers growing at his house. Their site is great at listening best for health, what fragrance it has, and sun or part sun and N E S or W exposure. Generous Gardener and Wollerton Old Hall have both grown so well for him.
I like cottage gardening too. I would add evergreen interest to your list, such as boxwood, holly, yew or spruce.

Love love LOVE the stacked flagstones around beds and under the fence 😍 Pinks, purples or blues to climb up your shed to contrast with the gray & white paint and to unite your garden palette ❤

Climbing hydrangeas are great for shade or part shade, even up against a tree. It will not hurt the tree at all!

Just lovely. Sometimes reclaimed wood is not available or pricier than but one can achieve the weathered look right away with diluted paint. It protects the wood and gives the patina look without the wait. Your husband is very construction savvy & talented but if one doesn't have that talent, it can be hired or traded services. Thank you for sharing your garden space and the well thought out color palate. Great tips on the perennials & rocks.

Clematis is a lovely climbing flower. There are many varieties to choose from.
All of the vines mentioned sound lovely, I have clematis around my front door. I like in zone 5 and it does well. It’s the kind you cut back every fall. Then i hang it around my fireplace( non burning) mantle for fall and winter
Although i have been intrigued with and trying hops. They are supposed to be hearty and grow extremely fast. Once again cut in the fall and traditionally around the mantle and burned on the first day of spring. Great video we’re finally getting our garden and flowers in up here in the western UP

*The tree in your back yard near your seating area with the purple blossoms 🌸 💜 is so lovely. What kind of tree is it⁉️🙂 I also love the foxglove in your garden, and I bet blue delphinium and white delphinium would be beautiful additions to your cottage garden beds. You might also consider adding white and pink varieties of yarrow and astilbe, as well as purple phlox. All of the additions I have suggested are perennials that are suited for Zone 5, so because you are in Zone 6, should do well in your Michigan environment. An arbor with white climbing roses mixed with 2 or 3 different shades of purple clematis vines mixed in would be lovely next to your shed. You might even consider wisteria. It does well in the cold weather of Connecticut in Martha Stewart's yard.*
Your yard looks lovely! I also love the cottage garden. Honeysuckle is a vine I have: small orange trumpet like flowers that attract hummingbirds.
Would love to know how you did the stacked stone border … we pulled down an old chimney and I just moved a huge pile of stones so similar. Love yours. Thank you for sharing your beautiful inspirational yard.
