  • Road Trip #673 - I-55 North - Mississippi Mile 81-103 - Jackson
    We continue north on I-55 in Hinds County, passing through the City of Byram. Then we enter Jackson, the capital city of Mississippi. Here, the concurrency with US-51 ends, but we begin a short concurrency with I-20 and US-49 before turning north again. We briefly pass through Rankin County, but return to Hinds County and the City of Jackson.

      It’s just this weird feeling of panic when I drive through there. I think it must be because one of the drives through there was during a hurricane evacuation, and another time, everything was frozen over (an unusual event down here) and there were pileups all over the place. So even when it’s normal with light traffic, that’s in the back of my mind.

      @@504RoadTrips Do authorities know how to deal with icy roads? Here in Europe, it differs from North to South. In Holland we do a reasonable job clearing snow and ice from roads. In countries like Germany, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries like Norway and Sweden are even better equiped to deal with it. Special wintertyres are compulsory in many of these countries.
      In Southern European countries, like Spain and Portugal, the rare snowfall causes absolute mayhem and chaos, as we saw in 2020, when they were totally surprised by cold winters!

    Really nice video! I-55 north of downtown Jackson is definitely interesting. It reminds me a little of I-65 in Mobile because of the heavily commercialized frontage roads. Loved the music too!

    We went though here in 1971 as 55 was not made north of Jackson. It was over night and probably the most eerie ride of our family lives...

    I get nervous going through Jackson on 55... The History behind the Water Works Curve. Back in the 1950s they started construction of a by pass route around Jackson which would be a US 51 bypass, and they constructed an overpass where the old GM&O Railroad passed near the water treatment plant. The name for the overpass was called the "Railroad Over Pass Curve" Then the interstate system came along the US 51 bypass was incorporated into Interstate 55.

      The current state of construction at the 20/55 junction doesn’t help matters at all. Maybe that will be finished the next time I get up that way.

    The State Street exits will come back. It's just temporarily closed while they're building the I-20 overpass replacement(s).
    And yes, Metro residents treat the interstates as their personal racetrack.

      This ramp closure kept me from starting my trip at the US 80 junction today. But I drove all the way south from McDowell Rd to the end of US 51 in LaPlace to its US 61 junction. However, US 51 is closed between Tangipahoa & Fluker. I think a bridge is out.

    I feel the same way you about I-55...I feel that way no matter which interstate I drive on through Jackson.
    At the beginning of the video, we see a service road on the right. That road connects to old US 51 coming out of Crystal Springs. Just a couple of years ago, I drove that stretch of old US 51. At I-20, I was able to follow the service road around and ended up at the US 80/US 51 junction. The old overhead junction signs were still there then, but I heard they have disappeared. Friday I am going to drive US 51 from the US 80 junction to the southern terminus at US 90 in LaPlace (hopefully).

      I think some video of the original 51 route is somewhere in our future. Just don’t know when. Right now, we have about 6 months worth of video already filmed. Videos are scheduled a month in advance. When I run out of material, I’ll start thinking about where to go next.

    If you are planning another trip to/through meridian for either 20 or 59, beware MDOT is preparing for a big project for here. 2 overpasses in town will be replaced and raised, and 1 bridge east of town removed and filled in. And viable message signs added along with traffic cameras.

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We’ll probably avoid that until it’s done. Although I’d like to see what they’ve done in B’ham with the rebuilding of the 20/59 viaducts there.

      @@504RoadTrips good idea as the bridges to be replaced are at each end of the city, including at the busiest Intersection in town. Traffic will probably be a mess with detours everywhere.
