I made this video coz living both in the US and Japan made me realize a lot of difference in daily habits. also, thank you so much for all the love on my last video❤I’m planning another video around quitting 9-5 & I can't wait to share with you soon✨
Listing down so I remember better: 1. Start your day with hot water 2. Go hard for breakfast 3. Balanced meals with the right knowledge of nutrition 4. Eat fermented foods 5. Drink green tea and matcha 6. Only eat until your 80% full 7. Use small plates, and eat a little bit of everything 8. Show gratitude before and after meals 9. Consume vinegar 10. Eat slowly
Vinegar or anything with it that’s fermented is a no go for me. After Covid, I can’t handle it. It literally will burn my throat and cause breathing issues 😢
The eating quickly thing hit me so hard. I used to eat very quickly, all my life I’ve only seen food as ‘something I need to do to keep myself alive’ before I move on to the next thing. I was a very active kid, with a very busy schedule of sport activities, school, extra curricular etc, so meals was always something I had to quickly do in between, I never took the time to sit down and enjoy. My boyfriend has taught me the importance of eating well and eating and cooking together to make our bond stronger. It is now truly one of my favorite things in my day, and I make the time to be intentional with my food, my boyfriend and all the resources that have provided us with this meal. 🙏
i have the same problem right now!! im a busy student and i play sports everyday so im used to eating quickly 😓 any recommendations or advice please??? i wanna also lose weight 🥲
In Brazil we show gratitude before and after the meal too, at the beginning we pray thanking the food and the willingness of those who prepared it, after eating we say "Deus que ajude" which means "God bless whoever prepared the meal" is a Sign of gratitude and respect ❤
Even in Sweden it is considered good manners to thank (the cook, the hosts etcetera) for the dinner before you leave the table. And we also have those coloured charts in school to learn about nutrition and balance, called "the food circle". Our famous fermented, salted herring divides the nation, though. Some hate it because of the smell, others - like me - love it.
Thank you! I was born and raised in Russia and we don't drink cold beverages and consume manyyyyyyyyyyyy fermented foods and probiotics. However, when I moved abroad I stopped eating probiotics and fermented food and I felt fatigued and gained lots of weight. Currently, I live in Thailand and I don't have access to Russian food but I really like Japanese fermented dishes and they make me really happy =)
I love natto and I'm not Japanese and didn't grow up with it. Ever since I started eating it every day for breakfast, my digestive system is better, my skin is better, my appetite is decreased and my energy is increased. I can definitely recommend people trying it.
You’ve inspired me to start eating traditional Japanese breakfast. I’ve always hated American style breakfasts so now i’m excited to eat in the morning again :)
This video made me feel ashamed of myself for being Japanese and doing none of those things, EXCEPT the 80%-full rule! Once it becomes a habit, it's easy to do! It could be one of the reasons why I have less stomach issues now than before. Weirdly enough, I love doing the dishes, by the way.
Try putting on a timer for 5 minutes or whatever time you choose. You will surprise yourself with how quickly you can do the dishes. Also get a cute bamboo drying rack. Also, warm water is therapeutic running over your hands.
So happy to see you productive with your channel after quit from your corporate your job. It's like my condition now. I'm doing everything that i want, build my own path career, do a lot of things with my small family without compare it to money or other's people achievement. Keep going!!!
When I studied in China during my exchange I drank hot water religiously every single morning and evening. All my Chinese friends did it, so I followed along and it was a miracle. It's so satisfying.
Indians also do most of this. Specially hot water, thanking someone who cooked your food, pickling, and eating until 80% fill. We call the small cups Katori!
The scene where you talked about your brother eating too fast and your mom telling him to eat slower brought an old memory of the adults in my family telling me I would eat too slow as a kid and needed to eat faster. I remember always feeling bad when they'd tell me I was a slow eater.
Same here! I was also forced to finish what was on my plate even though I was beyond full. So as a result I'd spend an extra hour at the dinner table after everyone else had left 😢 Now at 40, I find it hard to stop eating at 80% full
I drink at least one cup of green tea a day (on top of my morning matcha) and have recently gotten in the habit of gently rubbing my used tea bag on the skin of my face once I a have finished drinking. Green tea is a natural toner that may also stain your skin until you wash it next. It always leaves me feeling like I am glowing a bit more. It may also help that my skin has an olive tone, and the tea emphasizes that. Either way, anyone can do this to absorb the antioxidants directly into your skin!
I was in Kyoto in 2019, my first trip to Japan. Stayed only 5 days but experienced a lot of your food and overall culture. Wish one day to return back and travel more inside the country. I simply loved Japan. Thanks for your informative videos. Arigatou gozaimasu💕
you were born for youtube and storytelling so don't give up!!! Your videos provide so much value and believe me you will get millions of views someday🎉
As a half and half who grew up in the US, I came back to Japan and love my ancestral country! Sashima or Sayama green tea is one of the best drinks around. Be sure to try it! Natto is the best thing ever and we are lucky that it's so widely available in Kanto.
I am leaving for my first trip to Japan next week! Your video was excellent! I wish we North Americans would practice being grateful for food, eating slowly and stopping before getting full. I include myself too! Just watching this video made me calm down!
Hi, I never comment on videos but I am commenting on yours because it means so much to me that you can share Japanese culture with me. I am a Japanese girl who grew up in America who never really got the chance to truly know more about my culture until later in life (due to personal reasons). I love the "fun facts" you put in your videos about japan, like getting to know about how you learn what foods are healthy in school are amazing because I always grew up wishing they would do that in america. The more I Iearn about my culture the more japanese I realize I am. Please don't stop making these videos, I get to see more about my culture through what you share!
This is exactly the lifestyle we are trying to have in my house since we are back from Japan. We miss it so much, fortunately we can find natto in France it became my number on craving for breakfast ✨🌸
Im not Japanese, but i appreciate so much how balanced and healthy Japanese food can be, especially breakfast! Definitely beats American food! Thanks for sharing these healthy habits!
Such a lovely video! I love how it practical and simple these tips are - something all of us can follow. I’ve always admired Japanese techniques and their beautiful lifestyle. Thank you for sharing this 🫶🏻
You also have an incredible talent for keeping us engaged. Your content is both entertaining and informative, and you know how to keep us hooked. Your exceptional work is a testament to your skills and expertise. Keep up the great work!
Thank you, wathcing this makes me feel that I can nurture my body and soul in a better way. I think I have been treating them quite badly with all the overeating and lack of water consumption.
The 80% rule is interesting. I began practicing it decades ago without even knowing it! I stopped eating before I was full or even before my taste buds (so to speak) were satisfied. I am not sure what prompted me to do this but I always stayed slim. I fell out of this practice some years ago and also entered my senior years (= slower metabolism) at the same time and you can imagine the results, especially in 2020 and 2021! Seeing this video reminds me that I need to go back to that way of eating again.
Wow! very insightful vlog. Subscribed ;) I have been here in Japan for almost 3 years now and I am really impressed by how people observe a healthy diet or lifestyle. Having been through a lot of ups and downs, I have come to realize that my home country is just as precious as living outside of it. I found a "home" in Japan and I loved it! And always looking forward to feeling the warmth of my 1st "home" again, my 1st love - The Philippines :)
I have immersed myself in the Japanese culture this winter and now fix NATTO for breakfast. Everyday and Tempe, we always have some of that around. And i'm just moving forward with more of your traditions to incorporate into my lifestyle. Natto is such a super food and I feel so blessed to have found it. Embrace your culture, it's Beautiful!
I don't like to eat junk food, I really like healthy food and I like to eat healthy food. Yeah, I like to eat fruit and I like to eat vegetables. Yo, Mako! I can't tell you how much I appreciate this, You've been a great help and You're so wise. Greetings from Lima, Peru. 🇵🇪🦙🇺🇸🗽🙂👏👏👏👍
So cool to learn more about Japanese culture! I had a teacher when I was in high school so long ago now, she was also Japanese. She was very kind to me and she was also one of the few friends I had back then. Thank you for sharing! 🤗🙏🏻💕
Thank you Mako for sharing some of your Japanese heritage. It is meaningful for me. I live in Canada and I find that western culture really lacks connexion with nature; simple connexion of intention, body with the exterior world. It’s nice to see that these practices, ways and knowledge are still alive in Japan.
bro it's interesting to see that, I thought Canada is one of the countries that's most connected to nature. like i live in China and it's full of concrete around the nation.
Thank you for your useful healthy and wonderful tips Not only for our bodies but also for our minds(above all when you thank everybody for the food on your table)Keep on doing this sweetie! and a hug from Argentina
I hope you always love and appreciate who you are and your culture. All cultures are beautiful, and there is so much to learn from all our differences. The US would not be what it is, if we we were not a nation of many cultures. I am American, and proud to be so, as well as proud of the multi cultures that I come from. You are beautiful.
I am so happy I came across your channel. I have always been fascinated with Japanese culture and have recently had some health issues and thinking more about the Asian culture vs American culture lifestyle. Thank you so much 💓
Hi Mako! New subscriber here from South Africa! I lived in Japan from 2019 to 2021 and I loved it! I always call it my second home. Great video, I look forward to watching more😁
This way of eating works well for me. I would like to take my time eating my meals at work, but a half hour meal break is not enough. However, I carve out a way to enjoy my meals with aesthetic dish ware and decorative table linen as I listen to lofi music. Thank you for sharing!
I love this video. The approach of maintaining a healthy lifestyle isn't always easy, but definitely learned something new today. Would love to visit Japan ❤
This video was very informative and interesting to watch. I've always been fascinated by Japanese culture and think that for sure we could practice better eating habits like this in the West! Hopefully one day I can visit Japan and experience more of the fermented foods like natto too 😊 i can't find it anywhere nearby me 😅
Loved this video! Especially the calm and aesthetic vibe :) I recently bought a matcha set and am so excited to start making it now, especially after watching this 😂😇
I wish we had cooking and nutrition lessons in my school💔 I’ve wanted to try natto for years! I can’t find it in any stores even the international and Asian market stores don’t sell them. I’ve placed an order on Amazon for a bundle pack. I hope I like it. If you have any more tips for how to prepare it I’d really appreciate it❤ loved this video. Will definitely implant more of these habits into my life
Natto is a fermented soybean dish popular in Japan, known for its strong smell and sticky texture. But don't be deterred! Here's the quick rundown: What it is: Fermented soybeans with a probiotic punch. Taste and Texture: Strong, nutty flavor with a sticky, gooey texture. Health Benefits: Heart Health: May help lower blood pressure and dissolve blood clots. Strong Bones: Rich in vitamin K2, important for bone health. Digestive Support: Probiotics may aid digestion and gut health.
So many great tips here! I am bookmarking this so that I can come back to it, from time to time, as a "refresher course". Thanks for this is video, Mako. It is the first of yours that I have ever seen so I am going to check out some of your other videos and probably become a subscriber. 🥰
The number 2 and 3 resonates with me. I got the advice from my mom that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, therefore I eat full. It makes me feel energized and great enough to do. things for the rest of the morning so this habit has ingrained in me. I wanna thank my mom for this!
What a great breakfast! I used to be able to buy natto but not where I live now. I may have to learn how to make it. This was a wonderful video. Thank you!
I have just found your youtube chanel but i love it so much already!! The whole video shouts calmness and inner balance. Amazing quality and i love your voice its so calming. 😇🤗
I think I’m part Japanese habit wise. I’ve followed most of these habits unconsciously. I’m Indian and vegetarian and I’ve had home cooked food for most of my life. An underrated aspect of overall health management for everyone!
I wish I was born in Japan 😊. I am currently in Japan. My dream came true. I started to do some of those rules that you have in Japan that you mentioned, especially about food.
Congratulations on reaching 1K+ subscribers! Been rooting for your channel! Please keep up the great work, and looking forward to this channel hitting the 100K milestone. Congrats again, and may the subscribers, views, and loves keep rolling in 😊
Hi mako, thank you so much. Life here in Italy is too fast, too stressful and I overthink a lot. I recently decided to flip things, and to slow my life down a bit. I'll try to follow your advices, thank you again! ❤
Wow, you packed a lot of great information in this episode that I was not familiar with so thank you very much. Can’t wait to try some of the ideas, including the homemade ponzu. I think I could benefit from finding more ways to eat fermented foods and vinegar.
😬 I am sooo guilty of going to a convenient store a lot when I am back in Japan. This is very insightful and makes me have a different perspective and want to approach with better habits. I absolutely love natto!!
When I miss Japan, it is often a food memory that triggers the feeling. I love and miss Japanese cuisine. Sharing a meal makes people like each other or as the feel closer with strong bond. Eating the same food leads to trust and cooperation because they feel closer with the feeling of intimacy among those eating together, share the experience with eating and drinking.
I have green vegetables with every breakfast. In fact I eat it before the protein (eggs or fish) .. then a small amount of carbohydrates, if any. I am correct weight, have the blood pressure of a healthy 40 year old. I am 75.
Interesting video. I really love Japanese food and new healthy habits are always good. I already do a few of these, so yay me. I've never tried nato though.
Just found this beautiful video and you TODAY ! Visiting japan and Thailand and the Philippines amongst other Asian countries is on my list. Im 65 right now and hope to visit sometime next year or soon thereafter. Where can I purchase NATTO ? I live in the panhandle of Florida area currently .
thank you for finding my channel! :D when I lived in the US, I used to buy natto at either japan market or asian market. they usually have them in the freezer section since most of them are imported from japan.
I loved this video so much and just wanted to share that with you in case you read this. I've been working on adding changes to my life and somehow the Japanese way of eating really speaks to me. Funnily enough I've received my matcha, whisk and spoon on Wednesday and have made matcha latte for 3 days now. I've read about how people don't use the whisk and use an electric thingie instead because it takes too long for them. I immediately was like: wait, really? I mean the whole authentic way of making it is what got me even a bit obsessing over it, haha. It's like you said, I feel like it's this nice little routine that adds some zen, mindful moment into my morning. I bet it'll even be more so with what you said about just really listening to the sound of the whisk, so I wanted to really thank you for that! Sorry for the long comment haha, that happens when I'm really excited about something. Next up I'm going to try the 80% full thing, although I have issues with sensing when I need to eat or when I'm full so I'm not sure how to, yet. But adding several plates and eating slowly and mindfully will probably be a really good start. So thanks again! And I love the editing of your video too by the way:) Have a lovely day 🩷
@@Englishroserebecca oh yes, I definitely think so! I don't know if this goes for 'pure' matcha (the non-latte kind, so just matcha powder and water, not sure how to call it.. tea?) but for matcha lattes I've seen and read several videos or articles mentioning adding a sweetener like honey or - like I do - maple syrup. In case you don't know, I've found that the type of matcha and thereby its taste differs majorly from brand to brand and also from what I believe is called beginners vs premium vs ceremony matcha. Some are (way) more bitter than others. I've had one before that was super bitter, whereas I find the one I have now to be amazing. But the one I had before was way cheaper and from what I've come to learn that probably means that one was of the lower quality type. Also the temperature of the water is apparently extremely important (it's supposed to be between 70-80°C, I now make mine at 70). If you add matcha to water at its boiling point, it will be way more bitter. Not what you asked for but I figured I'd throw in some extra info:)) hope it helps!
@@romif1413 Thanks a lot. I tried the proper matcha the really bitter tea it was awful but I heard it’s so good for your health I want to try and drink it for that reason so I will try it with sweetener. I think it’s very expensive that’s the only thing but probably worth it.
Thank you! Very good advice. Some of it I knew but some of it I would never have known because my culture is different. I’m looking forward to trying your ideas. Thank you for the recipe.
First time watching your video! I surely missed a lot but will catch up🥰. I m from the highlands of madagascar island and we in our customs can relate a lot to many Asian customs and ways of living. Many similarities because we descend from Indonesians and Malays. But japanese habits are so different from the rest of Asia except korea and china. I love your healthy habits and still hardly try to adopt some to my dailies☺️. But i will succeed. thank you Mako for all the tips.
Thank you for making this video, this is hopefully going to help me a lot in my journey to being healthier and losing weight. Growing up in Australia, we tend to eat fast without thinking twice. I didn't know until this video that it's contributing to my weight gain :( Is there a book on Japanese food and culture I can purchase?
My family and my stepmother are Serbian, but my stepmother resents Serbia and does not think of herself as Serbian anymore. I think it's important to embrace both cultures and rediscover the good as you have done.
I made this video coz living both in the US and Japan made me realize a lot of difference in daily habits.
also, thank you so much for all the love on my last video❤I’m planning another video around quitting 9-5 & I can't wait to share with you soon✨

I agree :) the diversity in culture is beautiful ❤️
Thank you for this nice video! Normally people post expensive habits, but this is reachable and very easy to adapt in our life.
Thank you for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed my video 🥰
I am so happy I came across your channel. I have always been fascinated with Japanese culture and have recently had some health issues and thinking more about the Asian culture vs American culture lifestyle. Thank you so much 💓
thank you so much 💓
Hi Mako! New subscriber here from South Africa! I lived in Japan from 2019 to 2021 and I loved it! I always call it my second home. Great video, I look forward to watching more😁
It makes me so happy to see someone living so far away from Japan is watching my video
😃I hope so too!!@@mylifeasmako
This way of eating works well for me. I would like to take my time eating my meals at work, but a half hour meal break is not enough. However, I carve out a way to enjoy my meals with aesthetic dish ware and decorative table linen as I listen to lofi music. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for watching :) I love lofi!
How wonderful to learn about healthy nutrition and respect for food 🍱 in school 🏫 thank you for your video ❤
thank you for watching ❤
So interesting and inviting to enjoy a meal. Especially the gratitude. I love that. And so much variety 😊 for healthy living
I love this video. The approach of maintaining a healthy lifestyle isn't always easy, but definitely learned something new today.
Would love to visit Japan ❤
Thank you so much
I love the creator journey you're on
Thank you so much! :))
Especially the calm and aesthetic vibe :) I recently bought a matcha set and am so excited to start making it now, especially after watching this 😂😇
thank you so much Tika
I really enjoyed this video! great way that you present in your videos and very calming overall. I want to buy Kobachi now for cooking! :D
Here's the quick rundown:
What it is: Fermented soybeans with a probiotic punch.
Taste and Texture: Strong, nutty flavor with a sticky, gooey texture.
Health Benefits:
Heart Health: May help lower blood pressure and dissolve blood clots.
thank you so much 🥰
納豆大嫌いだったけど
13歳になったら急に大好きになって
今でも大好き💕
納豆おいしいですよね😋
The number 2 and 3 resonates with me. I got the advice from my mom that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, therefore I eat full. It makes me feel energized and great enough to do. things for the rest of the morning so this habit has ingrained in me. I wanna thank my mom for this!
thank you for subscribing :) breakfast really makes a difference 🍳✨
What a great breakfast! I used to be able to buy natto but not where I live now. I may have to learn how to make it. This was a wonderful video. Thank you!
I have just found your youtube chanel but i love it so much already!! The whole video shouts calmness and inner balance. Amazing quality and i love your voice its so calming. 😇🤗
Thank you so much 😊
I love all the habits you talked about and do most of them actually which is surprising!
I think I’m part Japanese habit wise. I’ve followed most of these habits unconsciously. I’m Indian and vegetarian and I’ve had home cooked food for most of my life. An underrated aspect of overall health management for everyone!
that is amazing! ✨
Congrats again, and may the subscribers, views, and loves keep rolling in 😊
thank you so much😊 I really hope so ✨
Hi mako, thank you so much.
You're such a joy to watch! 😊 I love Japan and its culture and wish to live there someday. Yes...do more vlogs, and good luck!
thank you :)
😬 I am sooo guilty of going to a convenient store a lot when I am back in Japan. This is very insightful and makes me have a different perspective and want to approach with better habits. I absolutely love natto!!
haha, maybe you can balance out by eating natto here and there :) lol
@@mylifeasmako 😂 yes and also 7-11 hijiki salad 😋 definitely going to be more aware for health
@@ZoCineStreet hijiki salad! you know the good stuff haha
I recently adopted having Nattō rice and miso for breakfast. It’s an awesome game changer!!
its my fav way to start the day :)
When I miss Japan, it is often a food memory that triggers the feeling. I love and miss Japanese cuisine. Sharing a meal makes people like each other or as the feel closer with strong bond. Eating the same food leads to trust and cooperation because they feel closer with the feeling of intimacy among those eating together, share the experience with eating and drinking.
thank you for watching, I agree, food is honestly the best part of Japan!
these tips were so helpful!!
Thanks so much 😊
your skin, hair and eyes are so fresh and pretty. You are doing something right for sure.
Thank you!
I've lived in Japan and loved every minute of it. 😊
thank you 😊
Wow, you’ve gained over 1000 subscribers in 3 days! Congratulations! 🥳
thank you so much 🥳 I can't believe it!
I really enjoyed watching this video! I'm glad TH-cam recommended it hehe
thank you so much! :)
I have green vegetables with every breakfast. In fact I eat it before the protein (eggs or fish) .. then a small amount of carbohydrates, if any.
I am correct weight, have the blood pressure of a healthy 40 year old. I am 75.
I loved this video omg, my favorite habit was expressing gratitude, I love that!!! Thank you for this video☺
Sometimes the algorithm suggests gold. Instant sub! Love this vid and I'm excited to watch the rest 😊
Thank you! :)
great video ♥ lovely tips and your storytellng is so calming and peaceful :) love your cinematic style too! x
thank you so much, I love learning and improving my storytelling! makes me so happy ♥
And I love the editing of your video too by the way:)
Have a lovely day 🩷
I’ve tried to drink matcha but the bitterness tastes awful to me. Do you think it would be ok to add honey to it. ?
Thank you very much for this very interesting video. I was particularly surpriced by the natto trick😊
Love this video! So wholesome & informative. Thank you so much for sharing❤️❤️
Thank you so much ❤️
Thank you for this! ✨
Thank you for your comment 🫶🏼✨
Thank you! Very good advice. Some of it I knew but some of it I would never have known because my culture is different. I’m looking forward to trying your ideas. Thank you for the recipe.
I loved how you explained things very well on the video. New subscriber here ❤️ love your editing and everything about this video.
Thank you so much! I'm so happy you liked my editing, I spent a lot of time on that
First time watching your video!
Thank you for your lovely comment & thank you for finding my channel :)
So glad to have found this channel of yours! 🙏

I really enjoyed this video and the knowledge in it! Subscribed and now I am off to watch all your previous videos 🌸🌸
Thank you so much 🥺🌸 I hope you will enjoy them!
Love this ! Always love to learn new things !
THank you for the wise words! I miss Japan, in special the healthy clean food! Peace!
Just found my new fave channel. Love your contents so much
Thank you so much :)
My family and my stepmother are Serbian, but my stepmother resents Serbia and does not think of herself as Serbian anymore. I think it's important to embrace both cultures and rediscover the good as you have done.
That’s amazing! It’s great to keep the best of both :)
Agreed. Embrace what is good in both cultures. As an Asian American, I see pros and cons in both western and southeast cultures.
You have the best music! I love it. So relaxing!
thank you so much :)
Love this video. Thank you so much, it is a true inspiration.
thank you for watching :)
yesterday i finished ikijay book and it was about these habits i love it
