I just went digging through an old box and found my Batmobile from when I was a kid. I was born in 1963 and mine appears to be the matt black version (1966). It's very beaten up but it's now on the shelf.

Thank you for making this video. I had what was probably the second version when I was a kid. A couple years ago, I bought a restored batmobile and I thought that the flame was broken. I was very disappointed that the seller didn't mention the deficiency. After seeing your video, I have learned that they did away with that moving flame feature. I am very relieved that it isn't broken.

This is a wonderful work of research. Variants really are the most fascinating aspect of collecting, but their origins and the reasons for them can often be lost in time, so I am very pleased to have learned new things from this video. The third version as seen here, with the exhaust port extended to include the tow-hook, must have been part of the Corgi Gift Set with the Batboat that was issued soon after the original release of the Batmobile alone, as shown in versions one and two. The Batmobile was never sold on its own with the tow-hook. A few months after the release of the Gift Set, the Batboat was issued separately, for the benefit of those who had already bought the Batmobile, and complete with a plastic adaptor sleeve, incorporating the tow-hook, that fitted over the Batmobile's exhaust port. Finding that adaptor sleeve today is a real challenge for collectors, at least at a realistic price. Any examples I have seen on eBay recently are grossly expensive, including some that are clearly not original as described. In reality, the cast-in tow-hook in the third version would have been a bad design, since it would act as a deflector that would have directed the exhaust flames upwards and on to the hull of the Batboat, not a good idea for a seaworthy vessel, but in the real Batboat's only appearance, it was never attached to the Batmobile. That unlikely assembly only ever existed in the marketing of the model by Corgi and in its subsequent derivatives.

Wasn't the biggest fan of the original batman series...but I will still watch it! 😉..just to enjoy the nostalgia of those times aswell as having respect for the cast/actors and actresses...the car was pretty cool in all honesty...those first 3 corgi batmobiles were the best...you can't beat rubber tires...those made you're toy/model car feel real plus they just look better...older toys in general were pretty amazing (I envy what my Uncles/Dad had when they were young) you couldn't break them unless you actually tried...wish I could get one of the first originals but I don't have the room for it at the moment lol...maybe one day I'll get myself one...very nice review though and was interesting to see the other variants and the changes that we're made. 👍

I’m not sure how old I was when I got one of these as a young boy in the early 70s, I’m thinking maybe I was 6 years old. And, I’m not sure which version I had. Unfortunately, I’ve just now found this video many years after it was first posted. I’ve just purchased a first edition in mat black in superb unrestored condition with such awesome patina.
However, it has a chip in the windshield piece at the top of the passenger side window nacelle (behind where Robin’s head would be). The only thing I’m going to do with it is replace the windshield piece. But of course, that requires doing a lot of things that would potentially take away from the otherwise unrestored nature of this wonderful example, including drilling out the bottom rivets. I would not bother doing anything if the windshield piece merely had visible cracks and not an obvious chip out of it.
Here’s the idea that I had that perhaps someone in a similar situation may find helpful (to the extent this is not something others have already long since also been doing for their restorations): I’m going to buy a super inexpensive donor model in terrible condition, cut it open from the top even though the donor car will be utterly destroyed, and then get all the metal rivets out from the donor car in preserved condition to replace the rivets I’ll need to drill out. Haven’t yet decided how I’ll affix the preserved rivets from the donor car onto the bottom of the good car, but I’ll figure it out once I sort of get to that point. I’m a collector, not a merchant. I’ll never sell the good car and this is not something I’m doing in any way whatsoever to increase the dollar value of the good car.
Really, I’m the only person who will ever see the bottom of it in my lifetime. And, I definitely don’t want to see something like six screws there instead of six rivets. I’ll likely preserve and use the internal rivets from the donor car also just to be consistent, unless I find out doing so is way more difficult than I think it will be.

The mechanical parts still work but the front suspension is broken and most of the plastic components are finished. Miraculously Batman is still present so there is hope. Hopefully you get notified for comments still. It looks like a large Robin in version 5, as his head is close to the top of canopy and he looks the same size as Batman. In version six, the small glimpse of Robin, seemed smaller. You need to take both Robins out and compare them. Be careful with the version 5 car as if it is the big Robin, it will be difficult to get out. Pull his head sideways, towards the top of the door and then you can manoeuvre him out. If he is the larger one, it is the very rare one and used in the first version matt black car ONLY. (2 month run in 1967). Smaller Robin was used in gloss black onwards. He was made smaller to go with the re-modelled Batman for the Batcopter but he did not fit in so they carried on using the smaller Robin in all gloss black Batmobiles. After the box colour change in 1981, no batmobile had Robin in it.

Just discovered your wonderful video and research explaining the differences. I happened upon it after finding my Corgi, given to me by my Grandad ca. '66 in Montreal, Canada. It has the black plastic wheels, red logo, and dark background behind it. Also, the doors tha the red batman logos.
The exhaust still moves but no tow hook was attached. Also, the top tip of signal light above the cockpit is red. I have, miraculously, both figures (B &R) too, none the worse for wear. The chain cutter/battering ram still works and the top rear fin is point. The vehicle is flat black orginal in great shape but the blue plastic canopy windscreen is cracked and has a chip taken out. Would love to get it restored as it hold terrific memories but this version will do for now. It is made in Great Britain but did Corgi export other versions than those you've shown? As mine seems to be a mid to later version. Thanks for your work.

What you are describing sounds like the first version sense it is matt black and has the moving flame in the back, no tow hook and red wheel hubs. The later versions did not have a moving flame or red bat hubs and had the tow hook. The matt black version was only made for a few months in 1966. Thanks for watching and glad to hear you still have one.

There is another batmobile model [not shown in your line-up] after the red tyre model, which has similar 8-spoke wheels but with black tyres and a slightly different batman logo on doors. Rumours are that the red tyres was a result of the Mettoy plant in Swansea running out of black tyres, so they used red instead.

That is correct. None of them came out with any red stipes on them. Thank you for watching. Another interesting thing is, when the last few were built before they stopped making them, they put them together with whatever parts they had left over so some of them ended up with a blue dash because they had not been chromed yet. Some also had the wrong logo on the side of the car. It was a yellow oval with the black bat in the middle. I would love to find one of those. Very rare.

Ive got all the main versions and the after market red wheels to make up a copy of the red wheel version (very hard to find an original). They were sold here from the first one in 1966 until the last one in 1983. There were some other companies that produced them in the US but they were larger and plastic. Then you had the tin Batmobiles that were mostly produced in Japan. Not sure if any tin cars were made in US. Then after 1983, no one made any 1966 Batmobiles until I believe 2007 when Hot Wheels started making them. They are still producing Hot Wheels versions today. Thank you for the questions.

They made 8 spoke and 12 spoke wheels so that would make 7 versions not six

When I made this video, I was basically going off the different versions of the car. The fact is there were only 4 styles of wheels. The 1st was the bat hubs, then the 8 spoke, the 12 spoke and the 12 spoke wide version. There were also different tire configurations. Rubber first, then smooth wall, tread wall, Red, and wide tread.
