      The 2 Car Garage Shop that's awesome! Is the cane still good on them? I've weaved cane for my first canoe also and I've been surprised with how durable it is.

      The seats are in great shape and at least 50 years old - not sure how old the chairs are but much older

    I do the binding using alternate holes, and permanently peg the other alternate holes. I pass the loose end up through the hole to be pegged so that there are no loose end on the underside of the seat and it's much tidier. I put a temporary peg in the back corner hole and do the binding up to the front corner. I put the wide cane into the hole and take the next strip for the front edge. I insert the end into the hole but fold the cane back to the left, peg the hole and then fold the beading cane back and continue with the binding until I reach the next corner. In this way only the peg in the last hole can be seen.

    We are wood/canvas canoe builders and rebuilders. We call this the 'chair seat weave'. In our 'canoe seat weave' commonly used in Canada (and all our canoes and repairs), we do the first two layers together (the short ones), then the the other two, then the diagonals. It's somewhat easier, you don't 'get lost' as easily. We also do a few other details differently, but not in any important sense.

    When I was a LOT younger, my best friends father worked at CHESTNUT CANOE CO, and at night he would bring home seat blanks,and for every seat that we weaved we got twenty five cents per seat. I can’t ever remember me actually making any money doing this, but I know my friends made enough money that they never had to pick for bottles, that was wayyyy back when.

    This has been an awesome series. I was wondering if one could use that same process, but use a heavy nylon string? I have a composite canoe that I am having to modify in order to paddle it solo and I would like to use some traditional touches with modern materials.

    Hello Adam,
    The distance between the holes. You say 3/4inch away from each other. Is this from center to center (of the holes) or is it between holes?
    Also do you varnish or anything the cane after weaving for protection?

    I've got a few questions on my canoe build. I've been running into some problems of bending the strips of wood to touch the form mostly where the canoe begins to go from the side to the bottom. Do you have any tips to get around this? Would really enjoy a response! Awesome build

    • @AGuyDoingStuffAdam
      @AGuyDoingStuffAdam  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob Mike yeah! I know exactly what you're talking about - the compound bend (the strip is bending in 2 different directions and twisting a little in one spot). Super frustrating haha! So if you have the capability to mill your own strips one of the best solutions I've seen is on the very hardest parts when you round the curve is to make a couple strips 1/2" wide - instead of 3/4" wide. That little bit of difference makes them a lot easier to bend. Are you using staples or trying to do it w/out staples? Even if you are building without staples you can use a couple staples here and there on the really hard spots and no one will notice. You can also google "cedar strip canoe cheater strip" - I've know that's a solution some people use but it looks kinna like more work than it's worth to me... I'd love to know how it goes or if that was helpful! Good luck man!

    • @TheRays15
      @TheRays15 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A Guy Doing Stuff yes I'm using staples since it's my first time building it. Wanted to go the easy way first :). I'll try the 1/2 inch wide strips and see if that works. Thanks

      Tanner Jabez Garrett good question - I did epoxy, then varnish, then I caned. I don’t know if that’s how everybody does it but that’s how I thought I could make the longest lasting seat...
