So many collectible paper weights for all the bills that come with the car. Its a feature. Now all jokes aside, I do think if drivers warm this car up better, use lighter weight oil in colder climates, and baby it, till it warms up much like I do my ISF, I surmise those rod bearings would see a lot less wear. Anecdotal experience but what I've realized about many BMW owners is, new buyers beat their cars hard within warranty, no warm up, no waiting for the engine to get to temp. And then the cars inevitably take a shit years later. If more new owners were gentle on these motors pre warmup, they would prolly hold up better. But dollar for dollar spent, in the M3 one would be maintaining to keep stock power, in the ISF, that money gets you power mods. Can't hate on the M3 but at the same time, that oil weight was just too heavy for a street car. 10w60 is never going to warm up but will do better lap after lap.
I love that people act like rod bearings are the only thing that breaks on this car. It's the MOST catastrophic thing that can break on this car, but far from the only thing that breaks on these cars. Ask me how I know.

@@stephenwilson2793 Indeed: "The BMW E46 M3 GTR came to life in February 2001 and was the first M3 in the history of the company to feature a V8 engine. The only reason that the BMW M3 GTR was made was to go along with the Le Mans rules stating that any vehicle raced must be produced in certain numbers for a certain length of time before the racing car starts its season. Since the Le Mans M3 GTR was a V8, the road car had to be, as well. To fulfill this rule, BMW put 10 road going M3 GTR models on sale after the 2001 season, for €250,000 each. The road car used a slightly detuned version of the P60 rated at 380 horsepower at 7,000 rpm - complete with dry-sump lubrication and sharply canted radiator with hood venting. Power was transmitted through a racing style twin-disc clutch to a 6-speed manual gearbox and variable locking M differential."

Did the European delivery on this M3 at the Welt in Munich. They showed me the car, shut the hood gently since you’re inside this “BMW world” and it’s pretty quiet, and then down the ramp you go out the door. The autobahn is only a short distance, unlimited speed begins not too far from that. Keeping in mind the break-in period, I accelerated up to 80, then 90, then hit 100. Felt so strong, handled so well, I put my foot into a bit more. 110 then 115, now at 120 suddenly the left side of the hood came up! It never latched completely from the Welt!!! The right side stayed latched or this could have been a disaster. I pulled over, no damage or twisting found, but wow that was close. Went from hero to nearly zero in less than 20minutes. Fun times 🤪
Did the dance in 2013 with the M3 coupe competition with the manual. Drove it to Venice Florence Pisa cinque terre Monaco nice Arles and then back to Nice for drop off. Beautiful and understated exterior design, especially after the big nose generations were unveiled. German cars back then didn't have to flex their performance so hard.
Owned an e90 328i back in the day, it truly was a great driver's car. Nice and nimble. People argue the previous generations were far better, but the e90 was a nice and comfortable daily driver also. The average driver won't really miss the added prowess of earlier generations.

I fell in love with this channel at your Mazda 3 Turbo review (I want it so badly!!!) Your ability to cover all the finer things of a car, either alone or with other people, is why I keep coming back to each of your new videos. The two of you work extremely well together, and honestly, you guys ARE the best car reviewers on TH-cam.
I personally know two people who have had their bearings fail. And they are both old people who never hit redline, had the car serviced at the dealership for everything.
The one thing I've learned from this and past videos. Don't pay attention to what Obsessed garage does because it normally doesn't make any sense. Great video and commentary by you both though, as always.
Currently own a 2010 M3. Having driven several the newer M3's, M2's, and even the M2 CS, I still haven't been swayed to switch over. The M2 CS came close, but ultimately the motor and drive feel is what keeps me with this car. With the bearings and actuators done, the car becomes a pretty easy to maintain platform.
But not much else other than the sound! Try driving a couple of rounds in any track and you need to replace tires, brake pads and rotors after you exit feeling it's too heavy and not so well balanced. With the aftermarket parts you need for this to make it a proper sports car plus rod bearings and throttle actuator preventive fixes you have a lot of options out there. Much better gettng a manual E46 with proper history
Great video! Nice to see you guys teaming up with Obsessed Garage. I honestly think that the E9# 328i or 330i with a manual transmission and sport package is the better daily driver. It is not as complicated as the M3, weighs less, has better steering feel, has much better fuel economy, and has the sweet naturally aspirated inline 6 engine. It is not fast, but it does not need to be for daily driving. You can push it on regular roads without engaging in reckless driving in a matter of seconds. Coupling the E9# 328i or 330i with a dedicated sports car (e.g., E85 Z4, Porsche Boxster) is the better way to go in my opinion.
@@mirkogiuliano1515 I love the N52. I am in the process of installing the 3 stage intake manifold and AA headers on my 2007 BMW 328i to maximize its power potential while still keeping it naturally aspirated.

Some people think that a car is great just because it has power and great sound but they have never really explored the limits of the dynamics, so they don't understand why something less compromised can be more special. But alternatively, it depends on whether you are a 2 car person or a 1 car person; to a 2 car person which Mark is, this just doesn't have the dynamics, precision or rawness, but to a 1 car person this is a world class compromise. Both are correct. Hence the disagreements, because the opinions come from different perspectives.
Definitely a collectible. Yes the engine is special, but the design is also awesome, head turner. I think M took a sports sedan and took it as close as it could to a sports car while still being a daily, job done. If I had the space for a daily and a weekend car, would not want an M, an AMG, etc, but I only have space for one car, so these more extreme but daily drivable sport sedans are targeting my wallet!

I think Mark should go to the Nurburgring and try out APEX Nurburg's BMW M3 E92 and F80 Taxi tuned by Team Schirmer to see if it warrants its 'sportscar plaque'. Robert Mitchell who runs APEX Nurburg, has a youtube channel and he's really approachable & knowledgable guy from there and i'm sure he wouldn't mind collaborating with the Savagegeese duo. I get that its all subjective and Team Schirmer have extensively modified their M cars but I do wonder if Mark has yet to see what the true potential of the M cars can give? Also it would be great to see them exchange their thoughts on the A90 Supra for a healthy debate, because Robert was not happy with the bumpsteer he got from that car whereas Mark wasn't really fussed about it.
Agreed. The way that Team Schirmer set up the suspension, alignment/kinematics on those M3s really helps the cars absorb the bumps/undulation/camber that the Nordschliefe demands. Misha Charoudin did a great ride-along video on the Team Schirmer "XX31.1." E92 too
I remember when MT did a H2H of this car VS the '11 Mustang GT 5.0 The Mustang almost did the same lap time and 1/4 mile compared to the Bimmer. I even was amazed with that Mustang track performance, that I bought that model year Mustang and modified its Suspension to track it at my local PCA. I was lucky to face off that same V8 BMW model at the track, that M3 had aftermarket bigger brakes and the DCT. My 5.0 was a 6MT. At the track I was bitting the heels of the BMW but had to abandon the track after 5-6 laps because my brake's fluid boiled. I felt that I was having to put more effort on my car to keep up with the BMW M3 (V8) at the curves, probably also the Bimmer was lighter than my car.
I love mine. I've owned later model and faster cars (M2 and Cayman GT4) and I sold them and only kept the manual E92 because it's cool and practical too.
Apart from rod bearings and throttle actuators what else goes wrong that doesn’t in the e39 M5? Most have had these faults changed as preventive measures now so are generally reliable.
They are reliable though. 80k miles and 1 repair of note (Actuators) in 4+ years. Reliable is the first word that comes to mind, when I think about my E92.
The E92 M3 is way, way better feeling than the E39 M5. The E39 M5 is great & I've actually owned a 540i 6mt and an M5 from that generation but dare I say the M5 is rather overhyped.

10w60 is never going to warm up but will do better lap after lap.
who cares, just do them when you buy a car with deferred maintenance

At the track I was bitting the heels of the BMW but had to abandon the track after 5-6 laps because my brake's fluid boiled.
I felt that I was having to put more effort on my car to keep up with the BMW M3 (V8) at the curves, probably also the Bimmer was lighter than my car.
Real anxious to see the SG couple review the new Lexus IS500 when that is available, speaking of V8 sedans.
I love mine. I've owned later model and faster cars (M2 and Cayman GT4) and I sold them and only kept the manual E92 because it's cool and practical too.
If these were reliable, they'd be the last best BMW ever. But that honor still goes to the E39 M5.
Apart from rod bearings and throttle actuators what else goes wrong that doesn’t in the e39 M5? Most have had these faults changed as preventive measures now so are generally reliable.
I have owned both. I prefer the E9X M3.
@@suprac19 And the rod bearings were an even bigger problem in the M5! It's massively over hyped by echo chambers in the BMW forums on these cars
I’m surprised he let you guys drive his car. He’s known for being obsessed.
Always appreciate your honesty and going to review the suspension first. No one does a review as complete as yours.

@@savagegeese 10% off big?
I know exactly what he means with the engine noise. I had a 2012 E92 M3 and the sound that came from the engine was amazing! Adding an exhaust made it sound insanely good! I now how a 2014 Audi RS5 and that is exactly how he described the GT350--all the sound comes from the exhaust. That said, the RS5 sounds insanely good with an exhaust. I do miss the M3, but love the exclusivity and wide body of the RS5.
E92 M3? Instant click!
I daily drive a Vespa GTS for the incredible driver involvement. Nothing beats a true mechanical rack and fast response naturally aspirated engine. Not even Mark's Civic type R has those feature. A truely uncompromised experience 🔥🔥🔥🔥
13:45 I couldn't agree more on this statement. I would also take a 458 over a 488 any day (if I had the money🥲)
