We Are Going to the Promised Land

- An old folk song as sung in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in my childhood before that area became the tourist attraction that it now is. As is the case with many of the old folk songs, the old people who passed the song on by memory didn’t necessarily sing the lyrics exactly the same every time the song was sung. Under the direction of a song leader, they adapted the lyrics to the occasion or singers at hand. Musicologists call this “spontaneous creation around a traditional framework.” Therefore, the verses I sing in this video are only examples of what can be done with the song. You can make verses for “some have brothers…” and/or sisters, neighbors, friends, etc. Or, even have solo parts singing, “I have a brother in the promised land,” for just one of many possibilities. In that case, perhaps, you want to add a verse or refrain saying “They are happy in the promised land.”
wonderful song and singing
Thank you
I am thankful that I am going to the Promise Land
