    Thanks so much! This really helped. Yes I do admit I handled my guinea pig by picking his back up and putting him snuggling on my chest. I see now how bad that was and the worst part is I have done it for YEARS. I am going to try this method tomorrow. Thanks a bunch squeak dreams! Peanut is very happy now.

    Thank you for these lessons on picking piggies up and putting them back in their cage. I'd just like to add two things that I think weren't mentioned (or maybe I missed them).
    I think many people don't understand that guinea pigs are no climbing animals, they cannot claw into fabric or something to hold on. So when people hold them vertically against their chest and only support their butt one handed, it's really difficult for piggies to keep their balance, cause when the piggie owner leans only slightly forward, they are gonna fall backwards. Many piggies are nervous when held like that.
    Also I think it's important to support their cute bums cause it's uncomfortable and scary for them when they're only held around their belly and the whole - relatively heavy - rest of the piggie is dangling in the air. People who love their piggies hopefully realize how sensitive and rather fragile these lovely furry friends are. They need us to be gentle with them.

    I have a large box that I cut a door way in and stuffed with hay. I put it in the cage and wait for one (sometimes both) of the pigs to climb in, then close the doorway flap and carry them like that. They are perfectly fine with it. :)

    Thank you for posting this video. Guinea pigs need four paws on a surface. Holding them on their backs is an aggressive move. It is what predators do before they eat them. We lift our piggies in and out using a special cushion with a house over it. It provides a cue. They walk into the cushion and you lift them out of the cage. This prevents you from chasing them around. Do this every day and eventually they will look forward to it especially if they get treats. Warning though... it takes time. It look a long time for my piggies to trust the cushion; but now they love it.

    I have a question. You said you should never lay a piggy on their back. If one was to turn itself over in its back while you were scratching (petting) it's back, is it ok to let them stay that way or will it interrupt it's breathing or digestion in anyway?

    I think some owners mistake their guinea pig's "shivering sound" for the "purring" of a satisfied cat. I agree with your interpretation of that sound. My pig has done it only once, and he was clearly agitated because I was rubbing his hair in the wrong direction.. As friendly and familiar as my pig has become, he never comes to my open hands asking to be picked up. I wonder if guinea pigs ever do come to an owner's open hands for that purpose.. The best I've seen is a pig who shows little objection, barely "pretending" to escape from my open hands.

    It seems I'm fortunate with my Guinea Pigs. When I'm putting them back in their cage, none of them try to jump out of my hand. Each one waits until I put my hand on to of their houses, then he / she will then just step off my hand onto the fleece on top of the houses. The fleece is there because they like to relax there.

    Your videos are quite entertaining. I'm so sorry about Sprite, R.I.P, sweet little piggy. i'm getting two male (or female, stilll thinking) Piggies of my own for Christmas, actually! And I swear I have been spamming your videos. just a question, me and my three year old baby cousin named June are very close. She loves animals and wants to pet my piggies, i'm ok with her petting, but her parents are suck ups to her because her baby sister gets alot of attention. so they got her a betta fish for her third birthday, and feed it like once a week! the poor thing is TORTURED! Not to mention the kids don't even care for it. So i'm afraid her parents will get her a piggy, then not know that they need an endless supply of hay and pellets, two servings of veggies a day, not knowing how big the cage needs to be, not knowing how delicate they are, not know the kids can't hold it, not knowing how they are often very skittish, not knowing the money it costs, not knowing the nail and teeth care and not know their cat will KILL it. I am so scared for any little Piggy that will live like that. if they cannot care for a SIMPLE betta fish, how are they gonna treat a piggy? not to mention how small their house is. Please answer, i really need your help. i'm ten, i think im responsible for a little piggy, i have also done a lot of research about piggys. i'm also at that stage where everyone would think i dont want June to copy me, so i dont want her parents to think that. I want to tell them, and i have snuck little hints like "y'know, guinea pigs cost like 500 bucks at the LEAST every year, not to mention the vet prices!", but they dont understand, 'nor listen! Please help, have a great day, tell your angels Mackenzie said "hi"

    I am finding it odd to see a few piggie videos disliked so quickly. Is there a jealous guinea pig owner troll tip-toeing around? LoL. So ridiculous, because no one in their right mind would dislike this video or others. It's just trolls. I'm sure you know the type, empty lives (no friends, Thirty-somethings who still live with their parents, never had a job, still virgins, etc., ad nauseum). So, they troll You Tube, disliking small pet videos and making hateful comments because even the family dog can't stand to be around them. And you know how tolerant and forgiving dogs are.......

My daughter just received a one year old female pig and I saw on your video that it is good for them to have a companion for company, so I purchased a 3 month old (so cute) and I was wondering about introducing them together. +Lillie Downer They don't usually like to have their heads petted so they'll try to shove you off. It sounds like yours don't enjoy it. My guinea pig happens to enjoy it and she smushes down all cozy and happy when I rub her head--usually. Every not and then she decides she's not in the mood for a head rub so she'll do the head toss to let me know she's not happy. Maybe try rubbing their heads with one finger and see if they like that--mine is always up for that even if she's not in the mood for a head smush. Hope this helps :)

    So today I got two young female Guinea pigs. My cage I was supposed to get comes tomorrow. However, it was supposed to come today. Yet, with lack of communication my dad brought home the piggies. So we went back out and bought a guinea Pig playpen and that’s where they are now. They are scared and they will eat in front of me so far but once I move they will hid. Can I move them into their new cage tomorrow or not? Remember I got them today.

    Hi! Your piggies are the sweetest! I need a tip.. I got my two, 9 month old female guinea pigs from a rescue about two weeks ago and they are becoming less skittish.. They come out of their pigloo when I come by. Lucy lets me stroke her a little bit from behind then she runs off. Then if I even try to touch Penelope, she freaks out and runs away. Also, Penelope has the tenancy to want to nibble on my fingers! When ever I stick my hand in the cage she runs up and starts nibbling? Is this normal? Also I have not yet picked them up... If they start squirming when they are on my lap, what do I do? Thanks and keep posting your great videos!

    • @whiteaspenstudios2706
      @whiteaspenstudios2706 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try to wash your hands before you put them in the cage, maybe Penelope smells your fingers and thinks they are food! ;) And also just give them time. How would you feel if you were put in a new place all of a sudden with new smells and sounds? I know it took me 2 months to get Teddy like this and he is a rescue too!

      Justine P You can buy them off some specialist websites, but usually people built their own - you just need grids and correx/coroplast 4mm thickness. Look on forums for where to find, ebay might be good for the grids, a local hardware or sign makers shop for the plastic.

      For two guinea pigs this is especially important. Definitely don't get one of the store-bought cages that say they're for guinea pigs; they're too small for even one pig. I have one pig and she lives in a cage that's sized for a chinchilla, so I would think that you'd need to get at LEAST that size.

      Maybe try just having them on your lap sat down in a blanket. No guinea pig likes being picked up really, so trying to keep them still whilst holding them up in the air isn't going to work - with a fleece or something to snuggle in and regular laptime they will start to get used to you, and eventually they'll be falling asleep on you :D

    how often can i feed my guinea pig lettuce?? 2 times a day or 1 time a day ???

    • @LittleAdventures
      @LittleAdventures 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      When it comes to vegetables guinea pigs just stop eating when they are not hungry anymore so they won't eat more than they need. You can feed lettuce 2 times a day :) Just change up their vegetables so that they get as much vitamin as possible (mine love cucumber and fennel the most:)) hope you have a lot of fun with your piggie!

      Don't worry there is no illness you can give to your piggie but it might be better if say u have a cold wash your hands before handing food! Hope this helped!

    Hi! I love your channel and your piggies and I'm sorry for your loss. It's very sad to lose a piggy:( but me myself have owned a pig named snicky for four years and that entire time he has lived in his cage that he got as a baby if I get him a much larger cage will he get I don't know "cage sick" and die? He is a loner and I really hope the answer to that question is no. I love my piggy and wouldn't want anything to harm him. You probably understand. I wish all the luck in the world for you and your adorable piggies:)

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LoomingWithHana Thank you for your kind words! No a larger cage will be better for him and get him moving more which is good for older pigs. I recommend to have the new cage in the same room and when you do the changeover put some old bedding and used toys/hidey huts in so his smell is in there :)

    What cage is this? And where from

    • @alicetran5480
      @alicetran5480 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The type of cage she has is a C&C cage which stands for cage and chloroplast. This is a type of DIY cage that is quite easy and affordable to make. The cage also give piggies more space then a standard pet shop cage, which is like a 2 in 1 deal as you get a cheaper and bigger cage. .

    Can someone answer? Do guinea pigs bite and do they hurt?

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are generally very placid and do not bite (unless they really do feel in danger!) but they may nibble affectionately :) This doesn't hurt but a proper bite would!

    • @maddiepaige7700
      @maddiepaige7700 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own two female guinea pigs and too be honest, their is a smell. I clean my piggies poop up about 2-3 times a day and that helps tremendously (since they are pooping machines). Now with the pee it can start smelling at about 3-4 days in to a clean cage. I use a fleece cage so the pee is particularly easy to find but you can definitely smell it. I change my piggies cage about every 3-4-5 days depending on the smell. The smell is not that bad as long as you spot clean everyday. Which I'm sure you do with Teddy! Go and get Teddy another friend! :) Good luck!

      Maddie Paige Thanks SOOO much! What water-proof layer do you use under the fleece? Teddy will thank you for the advice! Maybe now I WILL get him a friend, fingers crossed!
