I have just learned when you see a sea turtle covered with barnacles, it means that the turtle is not 100% healthy and have been inactive for a long time. There is an underlaying health condition going on that causes the growth of too many barnacles. Never remove barnacles with sharp tools if you encounter such a sea turtle. Take him/her to a marine wildlife center. They know how to remove too many barnacles in the only safe way. I wish that there were more videos about this knowledge: not to remove barnacles with sharp tools.

After seeing a number of sea turtle barnacle removing vids, I started to wonder if this was really a good idea.
I couldn't find much online, so I found and emailed some of the best sea turtle rescue organizations.
Healthy sea turtles have few problems with barnacles. They will clean themselves by rubbing against coral or sand.
Sea turtles with lots of barnacles are sick or under SEVERE STRESS and forcibly removing barnacles stresses them even more.
If you feel you must do something, put them in fresh water for a day or two. This kills the barnacles and does no harm to the turtle.
Only remove the worse barnacles, don't try to "clean" the whole turtle; this does more harm than good.
Turtle shells have nerve endings and they feel pain!
Gooseneck barnacles are delicious, google some recipes!

I agree with you! I've been also spreading the fresh water removal. A lot of people just don't know. Their hearts are in the right place🥰

I saw a video the other day that really angered me. A guy was literally hacking at the barnacles on the turtle with a huge knife! What’s wrong with people to do this all for a video LIKE?

It's sea, around 12 feet deep. I am 6' high, standing on toes on the boulder.
