The Basenji is a dog that people seem to enjoy owning. It was developed in Africa for use as a hunting dog. It's understandable that some people have never heard of this breed before. Many dog breeds exist that are less well-known than some of the more popular breeds, and many that are more well-known due to their popularity as household pets. The Basenji isn't the most or least popular breed of dog among homeowners.
    Number 1. Basenji’s don’t Bark.
It is a common misconception that these dogs are unable to bark, but this is not the case. They have the ability to bark, but they will not. According to the American Kennel Club, it is not a mute dog, despite rumors to the contrary. This is the breed for you if you want a dog that doesn't make a lot of noise.
Number 2. They don’t Love Nighttime Walks
They were bred to spend the majority of their days outside, and for some reason, this dog still feels the same way. These are dogs who are apprehensive about going out late at night.
Number 3. The Basenji was a Royal Gift
The Basenji was a popular royal gift in the past. This means that they were presented to noblemen, kings, queens, and other important rulers on numerous occasions in order for people to show their respect and admiration for their leaders.
Number 4. They’re Bred with Wild Animals
The Basenji has been bred with wild animals in ancient depictions, which explains why the animal looks more like a jackal than anything else. There are only a few places in Africa where this breed is still entirely purebred, and many people have trouble finding these dogs anywhere.
Number 5. It has No Body Odor
If you ask any dog owner what their least favorite part of owning a dog is, the odor of the dog will always be near the top of the list. Dogs are dogs, and they have dog smells. They have an intriguing odor that varies depending on the weather and other factors.
    Number 6. They Enjoy Grooming
The majority of animals would rather do anything but sit still while being groomed. The Basenji, on the other hand, is perfectly content to sit back and relax while being groomed.
Number 7. They don’t Care to be Left Outdoors
The Basenji is not a dog who enjoys being left alone in the yard. It's a breed that doesn't mind being outside, but prefers to be inside, where it's clean and comfortable. The dog enjoys going for walks, getting exercise, and playing.
    Number 8. It’s a bit like a Cat
The Basenji has a lot of cool qualities, including being one of the cleanest dogs around. The reason for this is that it cleans itself in the same way that a cat does, which helps to keep the dog looking good and reduces the number of baths you have to give. When you think about it, that's not a bad deal.
    Number 9. They’re Neat Freaks
Have you ever heard of a tidiness-obsessed dog? Probably not; many dogs prefer to simply exist and are unconcerned about when or where they are. The Basenji, on the other hand, is a dog who suffers from anxiety and discomfort when in a cluttered environment. This is a dog who thrives in a clutter-free environment.
    Number 10. They’re Affectionate Dogs
This breed is extremely particular and meticulous when it comes to cleanliness and effort, but it is not a dog that does not enjoy being petted. In fact, this breed adores its family, enjoys cuddling, and appreciates being lavished with attention and affection.

They are one of the oldest breeds around over 3000 years old, also known as the dog of the Pharaohs in Egypt. Mostly found in the Congo, they are an on-site, scent hound, pack type dog. Very intelligent, inquisitive, stubborn, independent. Been around them since the late 1960's.

@@dogtrainingtv755 I also forgot to mention how rewarding it is to be around them. They either pick one member of the family or the whole family to bond with.

I need a running companion and I’m torn between a Basenji, a Malinois, and a GSD. All super energetic and mostly not recommended as a first pet/dog, which is my case. I’m stuck

I had a Basenji for 16 years. I easily trained him to obey 6 to 8 basic commands. But to stay by my side while walking (or running) on or off a leash was impossible. He would constantly pull to chase or investgate anything that moved or seemed interesting.

@@gregmiell3037 that is actually a very helpful comment, thanks for sharing that! I feel misled in a sense cause people keep saying they’re very high energy and need to exercise 3+ hours/day, otherwise they get bored and tornado your house… what did you do to expand that energy for your Basenji?

    • @gregmiell3037

@@hugoschkiglitz I had a large fenced yard and a cat that he would hang with and play with. It's true what people say about Basenjis being high energy. If you don't have a large fenced yard, you will definately need to walk him twice a day. I'm just saying that it was my experience that their high energy causes them to want to pull on the leash away from boring you to everything else around them. You won't be walking him, he will be walking you!

@@gregmiell3037 hahahaha “he will be walking you”. These dogs, according to what you’re saying, definitely sound too intelligent for the novice owner. I love that they don’t shed a lot, aren’t complete lap dogs like most hypoallergenic dogs, and can actually be taught. But it seems I have to establish my priorities cause I can’t have everything in one dog lol. Thank you for the insights!

@@gregmiell3037 P.S. props to you for actually letting your cat hang out in an open backyard 🤯
