    I guess I must be going through my 2nd childhood. Been collecting cheap knifes lately. Lots of different colors and styles, and I enjoy looking through them. Are many of them practical? No, but still cool to have, IMO. I do have a couple of $20+ knifes that are my EDCs. Someday, when I'm rich, I'll carry a Benchmade. :)

      I now carry my Harbor Freight tactical folder and my walmart Ozark trail one as well as an Ozark multi-tool as my EDC. After losing my old Benchmade, Cold Steel, and Gerbers of the past (about 20+ years ago when they were all high quality) I decided the "daily driver" was something I wanted that was cheap but functional. I'll admit I had to modify the grind and on some of them replaced the rivets with bolts/nuts so I could heat temper them some (it's mixed on the results of rapid cold oil quenching). Some of these cheap knives actually had decent blade steel out of the box but the profile had uneven grinds, but almost all of them had weak bolts, screws, etc that loosened way to easily/often (I ended up epoxying some of them) but overall they're okay and functional.
      A $10 blade won't fully replace a $100+ knife, but with a little work can get you about 80% there, you just have to adjust and hone it more often from my experience but then I like playing with these "toys".

    I keep an MT20-35 in my glovebox. Black plastic scales. I sanded the sides of the scales with 200 grit paper, and it's comfortable and secure. It's a throwaway if it breaks. I found it useful. And it sharpens up really well. Frankly I like it.

    I have just bought the Mtech 20-03 dagger and I'm pleased to say mine is well finished and shows non of the faults on the one in the video, in fact I expected it to be similar to that one but it really is MUCH better. Mine does not have "hand crafted in China" just a tiny etched "China" but the QC as certainly improved. I do have expensive hunting knives and as an ex gunsmith I do recognise quality, the Mtech was bought as a defensive backup and I think it would do the job if ever needed.

    I have a small mtech knife that I havent left the house without in about ten years. It just kinda gives me peace of mind. I also use it for everything. I use it at work, I use it to cut steak, I'd pull it out if I was ever robbed. It cost me 15 bucks at a flea market when i was like 16-17. It has a beautiful wood handle. I'll have it till the day I die. In fact it looks a bit like the wooden one you have in this video, the handle is nicer on mine though. I also detected some play after a few years, I simply tightened the screw. Not a problem.

    These are the knives that you keep in your tool box to use for scraping gaskets, prying, twisting, digging, and all of the things that you "shouldn't do with a knife" rather than mess up the good knife that you carry every day. For that, they are the best knives in the world.

      Lol.. So what is an edc knife for? To look cool in your belt/pocket? To cut open your daily mail? 🤦🏼‍♂️

    • @MrWirelesscaller
      @MrWirelesscaller 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TTime685 Sadly that's what many people do with their best blades, they keep it for appearances and won't take them out for usage. I've hunted and fished with people who will bring their cheap knives only on such excursions and complain about how dull and etc is moaning how they wished they brought the good knife with them. I tend to carry one good knife in the field to compliment what I normally intend to take (my normal pack out on such trips is a machete, paring/bait/fillet knife like a mora, and a tactical folder of some kind on top of good knife of the trip).
      I'll admit I normally use the good knife with reserved mentality (I force myself to do a few tasks with it but so used to my others that I tend to go back to habits) as I'm so used to my cheap three that it feels more like a backup if I misplace one of them. After using the mora for so many pragmatic chores I'd have to say it's the most useful and would recommend if a person is in an area where it's legal to carry one a good cheap, relatively small fixed blade is a great edc if it doesn't get in the way. I tend to carry a tactical folder as a fixed blade has made the other people I work with and the customers nervous when I wore a fixed blade knife.

    Fascinating comparison, thx. And despite the whining on social media about 'mystery metal', MTech blades are basically the chinese equivalent of 440A Stainless... a steel that was _invented_ to make razor blades and 'cutlery'. Because it's durable, resists corrosion and still takes a good edge w/o too much effort, even if not as long-lasting an edge as some of the harder or more 'modern' steels, like D2, 'Titanium Steel', etc. which are also harder to sharpen.

    M tech has a few okay knives. If you know what to look for, you can get a functional knife. If you're looking for the novelty knife for your collection, m tech has some interesting ones. You either have to know knives, or not care and be looking for novelty. It's like buying Ozark trails knives, they're iffy but you can find decent ones occasionally.

    I have purchased two Mtech knives. I have no complaints. One knife I bought for a cheap price and the handle had a window breaker along with a metal handle covered by rubber for non slip. With regards to the blade it was serrated which is my favorite. The other knife was smaller than pictured and was Karambit style. It came with a holster attachment for your belt to be concealed from your back. The blade is sharp and the handle fits comfortably in a medium sized hand. Mtech has the right idea but needs to also make an upgraded line of knives for those picky people!

    • @JoseDiaz-wo5rb
      @JoseDiaz-wo5rb 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also forgot to mention that perhaps not all Mtech knives will be for the viewer's liking so take your time and give them a chance. If you are extremely concerned with blade sharpness then get a serrated blade.

    I use it daily,and it hasn't been sharpened in about 6mo..
    It will still cut through paracord with ease,and through steak like butter.

      Been using an Mtech fixed (MX-8035) for 7 years now, mainly because it's design is pretty handy. It's small enough to EDC, yet the handle's set up so even my massive mitts can get a full grip on it, and the sheath for it's pretty good, if a bit cheap. It's been used for digging, skinning, cardboard breakdown, batoning, scraping, and even food prep once, and besides some scratch marks on the sides, it still holds up fine. I do have way better knives including Gerbers, K Bars, Ontario knives, and Buck, but for the price, and how much abuse it's taken, can't go wrong for a knife that was effectively 12 dollars at the time I bought it. It's done everything i've asked, and then some.

    I had a count of 115 cheapo Mtech ... ect knives as a teenager, and know from experience it's hard to find one that won't develop blade play quickly.
    The biggest thing though is when one day you notice a missing handle screw then half your pivot screw is gone a week later.
    My brother used to have a coffee can full of these knives that fell apart.
    Many will will easily take a sharp edge and hold it well enough, but you gotta loctite every single screw if they're not too soft to at least remove and replace once.
    My recommendation for a cheap knife on say a $10 budget would
    Always be to bump it up to $15 and get a Victorinox recruit.
    If you need a good knife but have little money I say forget cool factor and one handed speed, you may not like it but the best knife for your money may not be as "tacticool" as you want.

    I have 2 mtech knives, both purchased from the same gas station. One because it fits perfectly in the 5th pocket of my jeans, and the other because it just looked nice.
    As a bit of a knife snob, I understand someone not wanting to carry mtech. They make a lot of good looking knives, but they are not high quality. The steel is soft, the scales that should be FRN or G10 are just plane plastic (there's a huge difference), the fit & finish often leave something to be desired, and the factory edges are just awful.
    All that being said, they will work for most intended purposes, and as long as you don't mind re-sharpening, they're fine to carry. If you just need a sharp piece of metal and want something a little flashy, mtech can do that, but once you've used something with D2 steel or better, you'll really see what us "knife snobs" were talking about.

    the most expensive knife i own is a 35 dollar victorinox. does me just fine. im trying to learn how to sharpen freehand on a wetstone so im practising with a 3 dollar walmart knife. i can get it sharp enough to cut paper (well enough anyway) and after a day of using it work it needs sharpening again. its perfect for that purpose

    I have a few knives many of them are some good brand average priced knives ($40 ~ $150) like SOG, Condor, Cold steel and so on. At some point I tried a Mtech, yes they are cheap, and I will not used it for a survival pack, but for camping, everyday use, etc, It can't be beat. I end using and abusing that $10 knife, I don't care if it break, I just throw away and get another one. The more expensive are usually and a drawer and maybe 1 or 2 at some emergency bag where it is seldom used.

    If it's a survival or tactical knife, then you should be able to stab logs or trees, use them as pry bars, do batoning or chopping wood, dig holes, etc. If they fall apart in heavy usage, you might as well not call it a "survival" or tactical knife. Then again, one should not necessarily expect the very cheap knife to do everything a Gerber Strongarm or better, to do, or last as long. I DO like your down to earth, everyday guy kind of approach to it, well done.

    • @cutlerylover
      @cutlerylover  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dont forget every survival or defensive situation is different most real survival situations dont last weeks or months they last 48 hours...you can use a $10 fixed blade effectively for 2 days before it starts to fall apart, lol...as for defense all it needs is to be metal even a dull knife can effectively defend yourself...Of course the sharper the better the more fine point the better, but lacking those qualities doesnt mean it wont work...

    • @scottzappa9314
      @scottzappa9314 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK fair enough. But then again ya won't have the knife after that and can't say "it did this, that and the other and is still holding together well." Don't get me wrong, we NEED cheap but reasonably good knives for those that can't afford high end or just want to collect knives. And I'm going to buy a MTech pretty soon in addition to the one I got the other day. For self defense against a bear or cougar, I'd prefer sharp, LOL. Against a man I'll need a lot less help. Several men is a different story...

      Ganzo's are great i own one but they aren't as popular as CRKTs and Kershaw's and there's the debate that ganzo's are pretty much copies from other knives. And i agree @Redbullet242 people that buy Mtech for the most part are people that don't know or don't care about knives and quality they just need something to cut with. I've seen Mtechs at mall kioks and gas stations so yeah i see why they're so popular too.

    Good video and Mtechs are budget knives yes definitely but they're some exceptional knives that Mtech makes that are gems they actually exceed my what most people know when they think of Mtech,the knives you have on the table are the lowest representation of Mtech,when you take a look at
    their better models like the model 151,8070 raptor,2039 mini raptor,086,2070,even some of their folders in the evolution series where their using s35 series steel in their blades... they're just like any other company for instance I like Tops,Esee,and Kabar but I don't like every knife they make and Mtech is no different
