Why I'm Quitting Nursing | Michael & Matt

  • I’m quitting nursing. 😞
It’s a really difficult decision, but something had to change.
I’m quitting because over the last several years, I’ve run our online business/blog and it’s become our main source of income. I THOUGHT I could do both-I BELIEVED I could run the business and be a full-time nurse, but if the last few months have proved anything, it’s that I CANNOT physically, mentally, emotionally pour into multiple careers simultaneously while living a happy & fulfilling life.
    .
It’s been an extremely strenuous time for Michael and my relationship, because as I’ve spent less time at home and more time at the hospital-he’s had to fill in the gaps… 😮‍💨 and it’s spread us way too thin. We’ve been pulled in so many directions simultaneously that there’s just not enough to truly be there for each other.
    .
I started working more hours a week than ever at a time when Michael’s job change was supposed to make things easier for both of us to get things done. Our goal this year was balance and it felt like this was putting that in jeopardy. It is a losing battle, and I haven’t had the time or energy to do what I love most-which is create.
    .
While we both enjoy the challenges and rewards of healthcare, we do make an income in content creation and have saved much of that to be able to pursue growing our family 👶🏻 and as much as we want to say we can do it all, we can’t. I was led to choose: continue creating or give up the business and dive all into nursing.
    .
I don’t regret my education or becoming a nurse. I want it to be a part of my future, but I know now what that position might need to look like to be manageable. For now, I’m taking a leap & for the first time in a long time feeling hopeful for what the future holds. 🌈
As always, thank you for supporting and quite literally experiencing life alongside us.

I'm proud of you doing what is right! I quit my my job as an RN last two years ago after almost 15 years in the field. It was not an easy decision, but life is too short to dread going to work everyday. No amount of money can buy real happiness, but friends I'm not asking you to resign from your job or abandon your business but be wise!

You have to do what is best for you Matthew. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says, your choices & decisions are yours and you do not need to justify the reasons behind them.
If quitting nursing is what needs to happen, for you to do what makes you happy & provides for your futures, then that’s what matters.
Your passion for travel, photography & content creating has always been a major part of your life, so focusing on that will undoubtedly be good for you, Michael & your future family.
Try not to let any negative views of others get to you. You’ve a strong support base, who would only want the best for you, in whatever endeavours you undertake.
Keep producing the content you do, representation matters, and I can’t think of anyone better to put that message out there, in vlogs, blogs & online content!

Where I live, many nurses have to work 12 hour shifts, and that would leave little time or energy to do anything other than work when you have a scheduled shift. Even on an 8 hour shift, the rotating shifts can be a killer for any free time.

Matthew, thanks so much for sharing this! We don’t get enough of these stories in our country. All we hear are these extremely linear life progression: go to college, get married, get a career, advance linearly in that career, get a house, have a family, etc. Anytime we deviate from that path, there are a lot of feelings that are invoked that can be really unsettling. The fact is although the traditional path maybe right for many people it’s not right for everyone.
On a personal note: I had a similar situation happen after completing a master’s degree and starting to teach high school. What I found was that the extremely long hours (I usually worked from 5 AM to 11 PM) and stress of dealing with parents, out-of-control students, and dubious school administrators for only around 30k was simply not worth it or healthy. It felt awful to quit. I went into quite a depression for awhile. Now a few years out, I know I made the best decision for me.
I’m glad you are making the best decision for you and your family! 💛🍀

I appreciate your honesty, and the fact that you're aware of the deeper issues too! My husband and I talk about starting a family, but as a nurse and a person working in beverage distribution we really cannot financially afford any options at this point. It's really frustrating. Hoping things change for the better. Good luck to you, and never give up an opportunity to follow what makes you happy, lord knows I would leave the bedside if I could, as soon as possible I'll be gone unless major change happens. 💖

I absolutely love how you’re so frank with things. Always put yourself and your family first, if there are others who can’t seem to be understanding, then maybe they’re not as supportive and caring as you’d hope. Especially with the list of things you’ve quoted people saying. But just as there are those who don’t seem to be supportive, you have a huge following of those who are. You have a positive energy with your husband. We need that. If you get paid while sharing it … awesome! Do it.

Matt, follow your heart and you’ll never go wrong; will you make mistakes…..maybe, probably, yes; but you won’t “go wrong” and those “mistakes” will be life lessons to learn from and grow.
So, breathe, and know it totally sucks, but you and Michael will be ok, and things will “turn out” for the better b/c you followed your heart (or gut, but that sounds icky, lol) & Michael is a wonderful husband who will support your decision.
So, long as both of you follow your hearts and communicate w/ one another and never go to bed upset, life will work itself out; even w/ all it’s challenges.
    Love you both ✌🏻

I hope this decision works out! the only reason i would keep it (or at least, part-time, Nursing) would be the benefits of having a hospital as an employee. My friend only kept his job at the hospital because going somewhere else would be expensive. However, I hope you find a way to do it and I know you will do wonders for your family. :)

things change all the time and you started with nursing before the pandemic. everything has changed over the last few years and your social media empire has grown and for a great cause as print media was just totally lacking and there was nothing else out there. I've been subscribed to your channel from back in the days when you were still in Omaha. I too am in the middle of some large changes which will see me moving later next year to capitalize on my real estate which more than doubled in value unexpectedly last year. Also, part time nursing is always available if you feel the need. Its your call, not ours. Take care to the both of you.

In the UK once trained, as you are, here you can opt to go On Bank, basically you are like a sub - filling gaps, it pays well and you chose which shifts you want to take. That would then also keep yur hand in, should things change in the future, and you need a 2nd income. Does the US have Bank in medical industry.?
Something maybe to consider before your qualifications expire from none use.
Loved your We're having a baby video, kudos. You'll both be great dads

We don't have an official system like this but there are many staffing agencies and hospitals will hire per diem which is usually like 1 shift per month. I agree, keep your skill set up just in case the future changes. Nursing is always going to be in demand and there are plenty of job opportunities even outside of the bedside.

I just quit my nursing job and I think it will be my last. I hate nursing. I hate the pay and feeling like it is never enough. I just don’t know what else to do…😢

Feeling guilty about having the opportunity/option to quit your job means you are a wonderful person who knows that not everyone have that option, but don’t feel guilty about it. What matters is that you are happy where you are at with what you are doing. I wish I could quit my job and do what I love, but it’s not the easy. You found what you love and on top of that you make money doing it! Enjoy it my love!! Xoxo

Do not feel ashamed. The simple act of FEELING better about leaving nursing is merely the answer to what is best for YOUR LIFE. I know exactly what you mean. Do what gives you peace.

You don't have to feel bad about having options. So many of us in healthcare who worked through the pandemic are looking for other options now because we are emotionally and physically done. Your LGBT content probably saved my life two years ago because it gave me the courage to find myself. You don't need a nursing job to make a difference. You've been doing that for a long time.

I have to admit I stopped following your channel because the content stopped being the quality content that you are capable of producing. I hope you’re at peace with your decision to concentrate on the career that will allow you to look after your family and is a career that you really enjoy. It never easy to make these life altering decisions but kudos to you for sharing the honest rationale behind your decisions on social media. I look forward to following your channel again.

Other people's opinions don't matter. They aren't standing in your shoes, and they don't really know you. You do what's best for you--no guilt--be your best self. Good luck on the IVF.

I’m a new nurse also started school during the pandemic which was hard! Still as a single parent, I graduated from nur school with honors and zero student loans. Had to homeschool my kid half of that time due to covid closing schools. And all that sacrifice just to regret becoming a nurse now. There are days I feel so grateful for having the opportunity to make a difference in peoples lives but more often than not, I feel like the amount of sacrifice and endurance of bullshit for the pay we get… not sure it’s worth it. Working my ass off for this degree and license to now go home crying after every shift… not sure if it’s worth it.

Surrogacy is expensive, but it's a one-time cost for a lifetime of happiness. Keep doing the social media stuff if you can make more money and you don't have to make apologies for it. My cousin went to radiology tech school. Graduated. Started working in a hospital. Hated it. Went back to his love which is working in the food and beverage industry and hasn't looked back.
